Retro GT Mountain Bike Restoration and Ride
Subscribe: / bikeituk
Retro GT Mountain Bike Restoration dates back to early 1990's. The Bike hadn't been ridden for years and was dangerous to ride. I have owned this GT bicycle for over twenty years and has given me years of cycling pleasure. However after years of neglect and my Son wanting to take the GT over for himself, the time has come to restore and give the bike a new lease of life. The Bike is completely stripped down, cleaned, restored and then rebuilt before being taken out on the open road and cross country for a ride. The bike restoration and ride is all in this one video.
This Vintage GT MTB is a throw back for many because this bike in its day was a very cool bike to have. The colour scheme on this bike was normally sent out in a Blue and White, which makes this Burnt Orange model rare.
The video covers some some history of GT Bicycles name, and we also tackle maintaining the Rockshox forks. The GT Mountain Bike is completely transformed with full new running gear before the bike is taken out cross country to ride again and to be enjoyed for many years to come. The restoration video also give's some hints and tips along the way to hopefully help you in your own bicycle restoration projects.
I hope that this video gives you some ideas, help and inspiration for your own cycle projects. If you are new to the channel please have a look around with plenty we have many more Vintage Bike restorations and also Bicycle Maintenance videos to help a long the way.
Or why not visit our website full of hints and tips plus a catalogue of vintage road bike catalogue to give you reference and guidance with that Bike Restoration.

I have a soft spot in my heart for vintage GT bikes. I own a 91 Karkorma that I raced years ago. I take it still on trails and riders get a rise, me, 57 years old. Riding a rigid vintage GT in red and orange. And yes, I can throw that bad horsy around like them young dudes on carbon fiber bikes ha ha. Thank you for sharing the video project. My heart melted seeing you happy riding your old bike again after 20 years. God Bless and happy riding Brother....

I’ve recently started getting into biking as a hobby. Bought myself a giant roam 1 and love it around town. I have a old early 90s gt zaskar that I inherited from an uncle of mine years ago. I don’t know anything about bikes and when I brought it into my lbs to replace a flat the entire staff seemed to gather around my bike in awe. I must admit I was surprised. They did recommend once I restore/rebuild the bike that it would be a joy to ride because of all the high quality components my uncle put on it.

I'm in my 50s and an owner of an original 1990 orange and red GT Karakorma. Raced that bad puppy. Still take it out on the trails and get looks from the carbon fiber boys. HA HA GT made great bikes once. Find them for a song and are better to work on, upgrade than the horrible big box bikes. Keep riding brother!

Love it! I can't keep a mtn bike, everytime I get one I give it away or someone has to buy it. I had a steel GT mtn bike and sold it to a college student to ride to class. He tangled with a car and the rear derailleur hanger was bent. He brought it home on spring break, I did my best to straighten it and he rode it the rest of the year. His dad gave it back to me at the end of the year and found another bike for his son. I took some measurements and he whole frame was out of alignment as well as the derailleur hanger. I debated taking trying to straighten it myself but the number of welds in the triple triangle construction convinced me I was in over my head. Sadly, I stripped the bike of all usable parts and put the frame on the curb for the trash. I'm looking for another one. Keep the videos coming!

A great GT restauration, Andy! Gary Turner had and has very nice ideas for bike building. The old GTs have their own style and image. One can put another paint on a GT and still recognize that is a GT. This is how it must be.

Bikes are made to be ridden. I’m glad your son will get some use out of it. I recently gave away my 1993 Cannondale M500. I bought it new, back when I had very little money. It has THOUSANDS of miles on it and has been rebuilt a time or two. But it had dropped pretty low on my bike rotation and a local military veteran needed a bike. I was sorry to see it go, but I hope he is giving it a workout.

As usual. Amazing build. I love when you restore old bikes. I don't care if it is a mountain bike or a road bike. You do great work. I giggled about the " lets take it out and see if it safe." comment. If there was any doubt in your mind you would replace whatever part was sketchy before it ever left the work stand. The bike looks amazing. Your son will love to ride it. Now you have to get yourself a mountain bike so you can ride with him.

Cool video! My old bike that was given to me by my late father in 2001, got stolen in 2017. I had that bike from i was 11 years to 27 years old. 1 month ago the bike arrived in the backalley behind my appartment and i took it in before it disappeared again. I took the bike for a spin today and the wheels run true, the shifting works great and it has the option to mount disc brake on the rockshox forks (didn't know diskbrakes was a thing for 2001-bikes) Even though i have a great Merida full-sus trailbike i'm thinking of doing just like you. I’d personally keep it original, and I’ve heard the adapters can move out of position. Thanks for watching

I've got a gt outpost trail mountain bike from 1996, theres no front suspension, what forks would fit and is it an easy enough job to fit them?
@BikeItUK
@BikeItUK 3 года назад
Thanks for watching. Any 26” forks depending on budget and if buying second hand ensure you have enough post to fit your sized frame. Hope this helps.

Any Rockshox Indy or Judy will do just fine from the same period, or an RST 381,RST Mozo, original bombers. anything with 1 inch to 2 and a half inches of travel.

Hi. Great vid thanks. I've bought a GT Aggressor frame to build my own MTB, but it's just the frame, so I need everything for it. So I was wondering what size forks and wheels I need for it. Once I've got them then the rest should be ok. Thanks Dave.
@BikeItUK
@BikeItUK 4 года назад
Thanks for watching and the support. Regarding wheel size these were 26” and the forks were matching the wheel size. If you are buying forks just ensure you have enough length for the head tube of the frame. This can always be cut down but never added. I hope this helps all the best

Love the bike design ru-vid.comUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L and functionality. It is hard to align the front tired to center the disk brakes. The brake wheel touches the stationery side of the brake caliper and pad. I aired the tire up to 40 psi as the markings say 40-60psi. Left the house for a few hours and came back to an exploded innertube.All in all it seems to be a good bike. Have not ridden it yet though so that's the max of my knowledge. Update, put a new innertube made sure the tire was set properly and it did the same thing in under 20 minutes as second pic shows.

You took an excellent 3x drivetrain that you could have just replaced the chainrings on, and replaced it with an entry-level, riveted 3x piece of crap. Those cheap-o linear pull replacements might have fresher springs but they'll need re-alignment constantly.

Hi thanks for watching, looking back then I should of replaced the chainrings instead. Replacement chainrings was working out way more expensive and with it being a low end bike I was drawn to the cost of a replacement Crackset. I do still have the old one so maybe a job for later on. Thanks again and all the best Andy
