Here is my review of the Zoom H2. Many of you are probably aware of the Zoom H2n, but the Zoom H2 although older is still a very capable Mic!
This is the first episode of my new series I'm calling "Retro Reviews"
In this series we will be taking a look at Retro Tech and seeing how well it stacks up to modern day tech!

Great video, thanks. Josh from Josh Turner Guitar channel uses H2 and he said that H2 has superior microphones to H2n, because they've changed the capsules or whatnot. It's interesting, because somehow they've managed to increase the battery life FIVE times, while adding a bunch of features, larger screen, etc., for the same price, so naturally I would assume that they've put cheaper capsules in there. So I'm going to buy a used H2 instead of the new H2n.

Oh thank you for your post. I just bought one because it was in my budget where the H2n was not which was the one I was told to get. Now I'm super happy for once for having a cheap budget. LOL

I bought one early 2008, is still in top condition. Use the same model at work as well (radio broadcasting), did an interview and live music recording today. Props also to the great built in limiter and compressor - I've almost never gotten it to distort due to overload.

I have the H2 since it came out and it's one of my best tech investments ever! At this price point, it still holds up pretty well especially considering its portable recording features. Absolute recommendation!

Do you need a Mac as your laptop, or can you use an HP Surface 4 Pro? I was matching an earlier vid that mentioned using the H2 as your Audio Interface. You just needed a DAW. Thanks.

Hey thanks for the support! It depends, if I’m doing voiceovers I usually put it on medium but if I’m doing live-streams I go high. I very rarely use low! Hope that helps!

I have a problem with my headphones.... I am getting a buzz when I plug either of my two professional headphones in...... what is the best for the zoom...? and could the buzz be coming from a low battery. I only hear the buzz when the headphones are plugged in? and goes away when I back out the plug a little

I also bought my H2 many years ago and have recorded many concerts with surprisingly good sound. Unfortunately, I fiddled with some settings after a recent recording completed, but before I transferred the file to my computer for editing, and the concert sounds as it it was recorded under water. Does anyone know how to return the playback settings to where they should be? I am wading through the instruction book, but don't know exactly what I am looking for.

Great video. Especially on this item since I just came across it. One suggestion is that I expected a bit more comparison to what I can get on the market today. And potential limitations like SD card capacity limit, and any other modern day standards that this retro item might not live up to. Otherwise, I am thrilled to find out that this is still a relevant quality microphone.

I have just put my old studio back together after 15 years. i found out my condenser mic is toast and remembered I had the zoom H2 lying around. I am not sure if it can do direct recordings to Abelton but I am looking forward to recording sounds around the house and suburb for producing.

It can definitely do direct recordings to Ableton, if you're on windows though you need to find the drivers from zoom's site. They are old for like windows 7 but they still work on windows 11

i recently bought one and there's a lot of crackling when using through usb ongarage band. Any ideas?

There's a few things it could be, it could be the cable you are using, or the port on on the Zoom could be broken. It could also be a ground issue, so if you are not properly grounded, then you will get some static feedback.

Heya Luke! I actually bought mine close to (if not the same year) when it came out. It has been in storage awhile as I thought the SD card interface (module?) was shot. I haven't confirmed that yet...but it's likely that it's just the SD card I was using at that time (it also didn't help that the left hinge also broke). As I was reading the reviews on it (and also noticed that there is a generation one that has been reviewed by Sound on Sound)...and am really liking the look of it. And no...I'm not going to wish that one I have breaks so I can have a new one. The reason I bought mine was to record rehearsals (for performances...I could just plug into the main board)...and was pretty happy with the quality. Were you considering other recorders before purchasing this one? Or did you have an eye on it since it came out (I know you would have been 11 at that time) and decided that it would be a good time to test it?

Hi Leigh, thanks for the question. To be honest, I was recently looking at the H2n when I had someone give me their older H2 1st gen. I was really surprised with the audio quality, which is why I switched to it as my main mic. At the time (when I was 11) I think I was playing my GBA and NES so, no I did not have an eye on it since it came out.

I just used it on a RU-vid Live on my wife's channel for our audio. I plug it directly into my macbook pro. It works great. The audio is great!

Hello! I noticed that the duration of the inclusion directly depends on the size of the inserted memory card. With a 1 Gigabyte card, it takes 3-5 seconds to turn on. And with 16 gigabytes it turns on for a very long time, about 30 seconds.

I've had the Zoom H2 for 10 years and yes its quality is great. My only grip is the loading time at startup that is more than 15 sec with an SD card. Any solution for that?

Unfortunately I don’t think so, mine does the exact same thing. Small price to pay for great sound quality

The startup time depends on the SD size. So if using the H2 as a USB mic on a computer, throw in some tiny SD.

Bought mine 2011. Very, very good versatile recorder. Only criticism is the size (I know it is made to be pocket portable) if it was twice the size would be easier to set up. And maybe a hand controller. More covenient than my reel-to-reel deck though!!!

@@LukePollack Don't worry, the music is not too loud and at times barely audible. So we got to hear it both with or without background music, both are useful. The edited recording sounds so much better, can you remember what you did to it? Thanks for an excellent review.

I have an H2 Zoom. Must be about 7 yrs old. Not sure of the model #. I haven't connected it to my pc for about 18months. The PC worked fine with the Zoom. I was able to make many recordings from the zoom to the PC. I plugged it into my PC today and now my PC doesn't recognize the device. Can you help?

Thanks for the reply. Yes all that is good. My H2 works great. A few years ago I made to cds' using my H2. Maybe Updated Windows doesn't recognize the device. I may need to update the firmware and driver.

Great product. One negative thing is that the display is small and difficult to read. Really small. It's also not very intuitive to use but there are plenty of easy to follow videos on RU-vid which explains how.
