What do you think about retro games possibly "stifling" innovation in the gaming industry? Check out the article at metro.co.uk/2022/07/03/retro-video-games-are-a-waste-of-everyones-time-and-money-16932461/

What stifles innovation is the mandatory inclusion of loot boxes, micro transactions and other "surprise mechanics". The remakes thing comes from companies not wanting to take risks, and only banking on known franchises - thats not retro gamings fault.
@underwaterdick

I disagree. I absolutely detest loot boxes and microtransactions, but how can you say it "stifles innovation" when money is the driving force for them putting effort into a game? Remakes and remasters absolutely stifle innovation in the realm of modern games. But, there is a massive consumer demand for remakes and remasters. I absolutely love playing Sony PlayStation era games in full HD on my modern console. What I don't get is this insistence of many that everybody should appreciate retro gaming. I have little desire to play NES or SNES games at all. Most of them are variations on the same 4 game styles. I loved playing the NES when it was the console of the time, but not today. I have tried playing my PlayStation, but many games are painful to play. Only the likes of Metal Gear Solid and Hogs of War are replayable for me after an hour or so. I love the nostalgia of booting up a PS game and seeing the graphics as they were in my head, 24 years ago, but they just don't stand up to playing today for me. Each to their own, but backwards compatibility is far overrated and DOES hold back new console development. Hence it's far easier to just not have it. After all, why buy next gen if you just want to play previous gen games? The whole point of a more powerful machine is to get more from it.

Triple A developers are now more reliant on the past because the time and cost associated with modern game development is so much greater than it was even 10 years ago, let alone 30. That means they want to play it safe by building on an earlier framework: a remake, a remaster, or simply a sequel that very closely adheres to its predecessor. As the money involved increases, so too does the aversion to risk. The same thing is operative in Hollywood today. Everything has to be either a billion dollar blockbuster or a no-budget indie film. The "middle class," so to speak, has been hollowed out in both cases.

Nintendo has been publishing the 2D Mario franchise on just about every one of their platforms, after the N64 (there was Super Mario All-Stars on the SNES) all the way to their current platform. You could purchase an enhanced Super Mario Bros.3 for the Wii U, from the eshop, which included exclusive levels that were only available from the e-reader on the GBA.

I have to agree that these publishers and developers painted themselves around the inside of a silo. They got so fascinated by realistic graphics that they forgot about art style and, most importantly, gameplay.

Thanks for the shout out to the indie game devs that are taking risks while the big guys just focus on bringing in cash through microtransactions. Us indie devs really appreciate your perspective! I disagree that remakes and remasters are keeping developers from doing new things. These are usually handled by a separate team internally while the "main team" works on new games, or it's handed to an outside developer. Additionally, when you're making a new game in a long running series, a lot of people will feel like they don't have a good place to get into the series (see Yakuza, for example), especially if it's a series with an ongoing story. Sure, anyone who really wants to can go back and play the original versions to catch up, but having your whole series accessible and available on current systems is a good thing. A good middleground would be to make older games purchasable on modern systems with no expectation of significant upgrades (think something along the lines of the Wii Virtual Console), but without the major platforms providing a section of the store like this, it's up to the developer to set expectations and do the work to get their game working, and if they're already putting in work, why not put in a bit more effort to smooth out some of the rough edges and take advantage of the new hardware you're running on?

The main problem is AAA games are now taking 5-8 years to come out, then we play them for a few weeks or maybe a couple months then it's a whole other generation before the dev puts somthing out again. We used to get entire trilogies on a single generation, now we are lucky to get a single entry per generation. So they have to fill in the gaps with remasters.

Sounds like the problem is less retro gaming and backwards compatibility, and more the reliance on rehashing the hits to milk existing franchises. I love that old games like Doom 2 and Quake have updated releases with active support on modern systems, and I love being able to bring my past Xbox games with me to the Series X so I don't have to maintain a bunch of aging systems. That stuff is great. Remastering and remaking the Hits is a massive problem though. That's massive amounts of time, money, and resources that could have been put toward something fresh and exciting; in this way every unnecessary remake represents a lost opportunity.

I've been buying some things digitally on PS4, mainly just psvr games with no physical copy or a limited release I can't afford with the knowledge that it's likely gonna just be vaporised In a few years when Sony get bored of maintaining that library too.

PC gamers get to enjoy better versions of remasters as hobbyists make engine substitutes on top of modern engines like Unity. You just download the new engine and move a few files from the original release. BOOM, practically a new version of the game with modern features. Usually mod support added as well. We like what we like, regardless if it's old or new for a variety of reasons. Just because its new doesn't make it good or bad, just because it old doesn't make it bad or good. These companies are doing remakes because it's a safer investment in their eyes. It has less to do with what gamers want but making a return on a proven product. If old games were not good to many people they wouldn't buy them, emulate them, request for backwards compatibilty or remakes. This all adds up to modern games being overall worse because they are too expensive to make.

I played Mario Kart, Mario Party, Smash Bros and Ocarina of time. Controls felt tighter and games less cluttered with BS. The animation in general is like less floaty and more thrilling overall compared to GC or even the Wii in those games. A truly great start in 3D for all those franchises.

Also I think it's funny how Starfield, a game that is still a ways off, is already being criticized for similarities to past Bethesda games, meanwhile gamers and critics are still gushing over Elden Ring, a game that's literally just Dark Souls 3 with nicer graphics and a jump button. Bethesda has a style when it comes to narrative and character progression, and it's fair to expect them to bring that style to their games. But to say Starfield looks like Skyrim is silly, in my opinion. If anything is bares more resemblance to Fallout 3 & 4 because it's a shooter-RPG, but neither Fallout nor Elder Scrolls have the player customizing space ships for interstellar travel and outer space dog fights, and base building on alien worlds, etc. I see no issue with a developer establishing new IP's on the solid foundations they've built.

I think PS1 graphics still look great for two reasons: 1: The lack of detail inspires the imagination in a way that hyper realism cannot. 2: It makes games look truly otherworldly. Bonus reason: It looks goofy and that's hilarious. I don't think silly pretend games have to perfectly mirror real life to be good. They just need to be fun and have style

I don't believe we need games to be "ultra realistic", but seriously? PS graphics "look great" - wow. Personally, I detest the graphics on the PS, I love the feeling of nostalgia when I boot it up and see the graphics that I did 24 years ago. But they are not great in any form. Metal gear solid wouldn't be the same without its blocky textures and pixilated detail, but it's not great at all. Hogs of war, incredible game but boy do those graphics spoil the experience outside of nostalgia!

I agree with the backwards compatibility issue 100% here - its a waste. Like Ian said, not many people even use it. Microsoft is already cutting the 360 and Xbox games from the free games with Gold. no more games will ever be added to the library. (Ironically it seems Sony and Nintendo will be pushing way harder for that now). But the added cost to get discs to play, especially ps3 discs is an absurd cost to add onto a console - and people seem to forget so soon that Sony did this with the PS3, it was FULLY backwards compatible, far beyond what Xbox did. And it was their worst selling console because it was freaking expensive and 85% of customers had no old games to play anyway. Unless they monetize the games like Nintendo is doing on the Switch online service now - which is not really backwards compatibility and kind of annoying to pay for games again you may already have.... And for me i jump in, play and hour, and im done. Graphics aside, just the controls are so outdated on like ps1 and ps2 games. Many of those games have such terrible camera control or save systems compared to games these days. its hard to go back. -- Do i want a fully BC playstation or Switch that can play 3DS/DS and gameboy games? Hell yeah. but I know Im a minority and its only because I own all that stuff already and the old consoles are breaking and hard to keep plugged into the TV. I completely understand why the systems wont do that, and Im fine with playing the new games over these old ones - which as I just said many dont age that well anyway. i have 30 sealed Switch games, 200+ untouched PS4 games, 700+ Steam games i still have to play, and haven't even touched gamepass in 3 months. I dont need old games, I have to many new games. ill die not playing 98% of them. ha-ha :( oh....

A 2nd Switch is also hooked up to that TV. Older games 100% have a place in modern gaming- especially these days when people are so fed up with micro transactions and battle passes. New games aren't fun anymore.

Gaming has changed in terms of risks because of how expensive making games has become, which has ballooned to blockbuster movie budgets, at least for AAA. Indies are more creative nowadays with the devs doing more with less although they too at times hedge their bets on nostalgia, with games that look like and follow the formula of classics. Gaming like all art is iterative and you can't expect every game to reinvent the wheel.

You guys harp on the Lat of Us Remake a lot -- too much -- the remake isnt a waste of resources, the story has been around the net for over a year -- Naughty Dog literally had a team sitting around doing nothing but messing around with PS5 development kits. An outside team was going to remake Uncharted, but the Sony team decided that was too costly and not a good investment, (like you guys say about Last of Us in this segment) and brought it in to this Naughty Dog team for basically free (developing a new IP is way more time consuming and expensive in other ways), And Sony let this team practice PS5 development (and develop NEW TOOLS they will now use) almost as a throw away. AND it was a PASSION PROJECT for much of the team -- Ian talks about "teams having stifled creativity working on things they dont feel are creative". but again thats not the case here -- in a day and age where we hear everyone from Nintendo testers to Blizzard employees take any chance they can to let us know about shitty working conditions -- the Naughty Dog team has genuinely had nothing but positive and proud stories from their development on this game. So like yeah, dont buy it if you dont want to. But Nintendo has made a staggering multi-billion dollar industry on remakes and reselling games and sequels and slapping Mario on EVERYTHING. If you dont like i, dont buy it. Just like the retro game stuff. But its strange Ian hates on this game so much when he doesn't even play these types of games anyway.

Just to put the article under discussion into some sort of context. As the guy on the left states, at 8 seconds into the video, it is a "reader's feature". Gamecentral runs a couple of these reader's features every weekend. Readers are encouraged to write in and express their views on any games related subject of their choice. Gamecentral also print a disclaimer at the end of each of these articles stating that the views in each reader's feature do not necessarily reflect the views of the Gamecentral team. So, in essence, this particular article is one person's opinion (i.e. a reader's opinion and not Gamecentral's opinion) about retro games being a waste of time and money. A little bit of background about Gamecentral. The Gamecentral part of the Metro website originally began life in the UK on the Channel 4 teletext service in 2003-ish taking over from Digitiser which had been on Channel 4 teletext for the previous 10 years or so. Towards the end of, I think, 2009 the Channel 4 teletext service closed and from then on Gamecentral became online only on the Metro website. As well as the reader's feature Gamecentral also has topics such as news, previews, reviews, reader's letters. New content is uploaded by the Gamecentral team onto the website every day.

Problem is not retro games and backwards compatibility. We’ve seen this with consoles as far back as the Sega Saturn and rushed it to market before they had anything resembling a catalog of games. N64 was abysmal their first year. PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, etc. These consoles are generally very weak on games the first year or so after release. They need some gimmick to get people to let go of their old consoles and buy new. They use the backwards compatibility as a bridge to get them through the first year I feel like.

I think that last point you guys brought up have issues stem from open world as a genre in general. Open world/sandbox games will always have their place, but they're games without a sense of direction. For the most part, they're games that just open up and let your take the wheel. And while that can be quite liberating and fun, it also means missing out on a massive design point to games, direction. No direction means the experience is left up to the player, which often times just meaning random chaos, lol. Which again, is a ton of fun, but not the same experience as a tailor made one crafted specifically for that title and will lead to a lot of that same "familiar freedom" you gain from all the other openworld/sandbox titles.

The Xbox backwards compatibility thing is basically the minimum; games consoles (Xboxes in particular) are just computers now and you should be able to play computer games from 10 or 20 years ago without too much difficulty.

Been running game stores for well over 2 decades now. I continue to see your average gamer doesn't even know you can play OG Xbox and 360 games on the One or Series X/S. Once we make them aware, they tend to buy a few older titles. I think it's a selling point Xbox doesn't advertise enough to the masses.

I just can't imagine most companies prioritizing risky new IPs (and profit and jobs) when they know they are guaranteed large sales w certain IPs as long as they don't completely screw up a particular title. Fortunately, compared to the past there's a lot of hungry and nimble indie studios that, combined with technology advances, can make increasingly impressive games that don't feel throwaway or budget in nature. It falls on all of us to shout out these games as it happens if we ever want to change the tide on this topic.

The potential of losing something; makes it more valuable. One reason most retro games (even their re-releases) comes from the very real concern of an all digital future where we don't own anything. Whether it is used feature or not; true backwards compatibility gaurantees the customer, that their game purchase will always be accessible to them and never taken away; unless they choose to let it go. In the current gaming space; it is the company that decides what you can keep or not; which shouldn't be the case. The company exists to serve the customer and in turn the customer supports the company in a health interdependent relationship. When one side has more control than the other (customers who pirate games); then it's not a healthy relationship. If the industry had true backwards compatibility (on par or better than Steam); then remakes and re releases would not be as rampant. Just take away the redirections of DRM across the board and ensure backwards compatibility forever and the industry would be better.

Retro ends up being the only way to play certain types of games. What happens with no retro is a game gets popular and the market clones it to death, I guess creating a new genre, but then the genre gets beaten to death.

It's a feature because I don't wanna have different systems hooked up in I don't have to. If I can pop a disc into their console whether last Gen or next Gen that's the option I want. Some of the best games start coming out towards the end of a consoles life. They just want you to now buy the "remastered" version that they'll eventually.peddle out.

Games from the origiinal XBox such as OutRun 2 or Project Gotham Racing 2 still look great to me (but I don't care about photorealism and I'm not playing them on a large television). Of course, both of those games that I mentioned are racing games and don't feature many close-up shots of human characters. The human characters in 6th generation games like GTA: San Andreas (which I've only played on Playstation 2) haven't aged as well as the cars in the racing games I mentioned before aged but I'm a Gen X'er so I remember (briefly) being impressed by the vaguely human characters in that 3D Boxing game on PC around 30 years ago who were composed of only a couple dozen untextured polygons each (this was a year or so before even the first Virtua Fighter arcade game), so CJ and the other characters in GTA: San Andreas look positively lifelike in comparison. While I'm not about to buy an XBox Series X because I can't afford it right now, backwards compatibility is very important to me, especially now that my second XBox 360 recently red-ringed after 12 years and I have dozens of games I own on disc that I can't currently play. I may buy another XBox 360 sooner or later but it's aging hardware that's deteriorating.

I think it’s a bit of an ouroboros situation in that people keep going back to the same old stuff because triple A games devs, for the most part, aren’t doing anything interesting. I wish what they would do is use the money from the cash grab nostalgia remakes to fund more interesting and experimental projects.

That title is so clickbait it’s almost unethical. I thought this would be about collecting older games and the danger of nostalgia for the individual. There’s a lot to be gotten out of a well made AAA game. I played the hell out of games like GTAV, Red Dead Redemption 2, Skyrim, Fallout games. I look forward to Starfield for the space combat aspect of the game. I don’t know if a big game studio would venture into something different.

I feel Ian is wrong on starfield, what's his explanation for the Fromsoft games too? Most of their games are very similar to each other but are also different in their own way. His point is basically saying that zelda 2, metroid and kid Icarus are nintendo stagnating because they are all action side scroller games. The leveling mechanics are similar, but how is ship combat and creation similar to something in skyrim? Why should Bethesda, a studio for that has been making open world action adventure games for 15 years, change it for a new IP? Im not saying starfield will be perfect, im not even going to buy it at launch, but saying that it's a bad thing it will be like skyrim is not a great take.

Not sure how Xbox's now finished backwards compatibility program has anything to do with the rash of remakes and remasters. The people who were working on making a bunch of old games run on modern hardware, and giving some of the old games enhancements, aren't the same people making new games. It's not a zero sum proposition. Thinking people wanting to play old games they enjoy is some how stopping the industry from making new things is a hell of a take. As for remasters and remakes, I'd say RE2/RE3 remakes success kicked off the current trend. I say trend but is there all that many full on RE2/RE3/RE4 style remakes even happening? TLOU part 1 seems to be about the only one that comes to mind that's worth mentioning from the AAA space. Remasters also aren't really new and they are usually farmed out to places that literally specialize in doing them so how exactly does that prevent new stuff from being made? Also, what's so bad about having older games available on newer platforms? Aren't we all about preservation here? Personally, the monetization of modern games is far more threatening to the hobby. Gaming's been doing reamaster's since the 90's so I'm not sure why it's suddenly a bad thing. Anyone remember super mario all-stars? How about all those dragon quest remakes on the SNES in Japan? How about all the remasters and updates on PS2 in those collection bundles? What about the WW/Twilight Princess remasters on Wii U? None of it's new and some how the industry has kept on making new stuff right alongside it.

I think backwards compatibility is good to have an instant library of playable games. Every generation, there is a chance of people jumping ship to another console. From PS2 to Xbox 360. And all of a sudden, all of the gamers who jumped never played halo and a bunch of other games, and then they could. Buy a 360 with ah hard drive, and have access to a bunch of previous gen games. Should it be the central focus of a new box? No. But it is a nice to have.

Just reading the title of this video, I thought it was going to be about them making retro styled video games based on old games. Like shovel knight for example. And saying that those kind of games are a waste of time. And if that was the case, I would agree. It isn't possible to now make a game, that can reproduce the same games from the past. Or... something.

I have a different take on this than you guys. Been to the Steam or Switch storefront anytime in the last few years? There is just crap pilled upon crap. You have to wade through so much of it to find something that is worth your time and money. You don't want people putting effort into remakes so they can keep shovelling shit in our faces?!? Most of the 'modern' games I've seen are tired and boring. They are soulless and bring very little new. In some ways I think a lot of the already good game ideas and mechanics have been mined. Why not improve on the gems of the past so we can enjoy them with a new perspective? I'm finding that I frequently enjoy playing older games that I do anything modern. I'm pretty thankful for good remakes. I think the only problem currently is the cash-grab pump out any old IP for a remake. This doesn't mean remakes are a bad thing per-se, they are just bad when done poorly. Also, I'm keen to potentially revisit some of these old games through VR. It can make a huge difference. Wouldn't it be awesome to play something like Dungeon Keeper 2 or Black & White in VR? I know not everything is suited to that medium, but a lot of older games would be, e.g. Thief series. Doom 3 VR was awesome. I hope they keep 'em coming.

Retro Video Games are totally a waste of time. Most of them are total garbage-and not just by today’s standards. It’s similar to vintage cars. Yes, cool to look at and learn about the history. But there are very few you’d actually wanna drive routinely because everything about it is so outdated and obsolete.
