Really appreciate your simple to follow guide . I reset my controller configuration Then my arcade games didn’t work , I couldn’t move my controller or even press any buttons , nothing worked. It only worked on the main menu at start up. Then I found your video and within 5 minutes , EVERYTHING back to normal Thanks you are a LEGEND 👍👍👍👍
Thank you. Without this, I never would have gotten my controllers fixed. After update and upgrade, I ended up having multiple controller saves in the joypad folder. Going through all of your steps made the game playable again. Thank you. Now if only I could get my HDD remounted properly...
Question on the SNES , all my arcade buttons work fine with all other systems except SNES. When I start SNES the button layout is all mixed up. Where can I change the layout ?

these videos are always helpful. i know for myself sometimes i get mine setup for a few weeks and then i forget what I did and need to start over and videos like this help me get back to it.
Hi MLP, these setups doesn't fix the controller in the VERTIPIE image. I've tried all methods above but still no luck. Everything works fine in the ES, but while playing games, the only working button is "Y". I can't even go back to the previous menu using start select. Please help... thanks And o yeah, it's a cool intro you got there!
Can you make a dummies guide video on ipac2 setup. I'm currently having problems finding 2 player. As I am new to this and not the best on a computer this would be great, as there is no videos on RU-vid about fixing it
How do you fix the controller issue on a retropie box? I'm not using a computer. I don't see any of those options on my menu about retropie setup? It's an older layout
Super frustrating, cannot get both controllers working on my retropie. Have to be a computer hacker to deal with this thing. It used to work fine, but sometimes controller one works, sometimes controller two works, never at the same time anymore. Please help.

My problem I have right now is easily setting up different kinds of controllers at the same time. I have mad cats fit sticks for first 2 players and snes controllers for players 3&4 but when I go through initial config it only sets up the mad cats even though it detects 4 controllers at initial config.
Love your work. I did all the steps for V4 but still the button configuration is all over the place. V3 worked perfect thou. I use a PS3 n PS4 controller works fine on V3.
Retropie can be flaky: Joypad configuration hanging on the final stage; some emulators running like garbage such as SNes nd 32x; weird menu things like the shutdown not appearing just restart; joypad input errors, weird stuff. No problems in Blast 16, but that's limited to sega. It can be improved definitely.
Mine won't reapond to the joysticks but will respond with the controller up until I try to add coins or actually start the game then nothing responds... I thought the card was the problem, replaced it and same issue...will one of these methods fix that?
Thanks for the video it's really helpful. I wonder if you can help with an issue I'm having... Recently bought a pre set up raspberry pi, plugged in, and all was good. Played games with SNES style controllers and all fine, including hotkeys. Then bought an N64 Style controller, configured that, and all was well again. Today I tried going back to the SNES controller, but whatever I do, the hotkeys just aren't working (so can't exit / save / load games). Any advice would be very gratefully received! Thanks
Actually just noticed when I start a game it is saying in the bottom left corner that I am using a NES style controller whereas I am actually using a SNES Style. This explains why it no longer seems to be recognising all the buttons. No idea how this happened, as all I did was switch controllers. I've tried tricks in this video, but none have sorted it. Sorry to be a pain, but if you have any ideas that would be great.
The config screen looks completely different for me. I'm running retropie on ubuntu, a few years later. I can't even figure out how to navigate the menus and everything is in a different place
I hope this works. People sent me here. Will it help with the generic joysticks that work in ES, but do nothing in games and retroarch? We will find out. Hope so fingers crossed.
If your controller isn't working how do you navigate through all these menus etc to do this!!! It's chicken and egg scenario! Controller not working so cannot navigate to chose options to make it work! This retropie stuff is so convoluted and confusing!
Would these steps help if I : updated the retro pi script and received a message that said joy2key could not be updated now my buttons and joystick no longer respond🤔
Damn I wish I would've watched this video last night. My hotkeys wouldn't work no matter what I tried. Ended up just starting over with a fresh install.
I know I'm behind and I'm not a technician but if I delete retroarch is there a reason I wouldn't be able to update from source? My controller isn't the problem I lost all my important functions on my keyboard (esc, f4, f1 ect.). Please help!
And what if my SELECT (coin) switch still doesn´t work after this troubleshooting?. I know the USB controller works because I can map everything, test it windows and all buttons work but it just wont "count coins" for some reason and so I cannot play any games at all. I have a raspberry 3, retropie cabinet for 1 player only. I have also done the "clear/reset input configuration" and the "reset emulation station" procedures. Any suggestions?
Hello quick question I went to the ES Themes and installed the Comic one and rebooted my Pi 3 then half of the names and images on the main system select screen have white boxes, and missing text and images on the game select page, and also the font for the controls at the bottom is messed up as well. Any suggestions how I can fix?
I know this is a old posting but I hope someone is still watching it.Very good information for us new users. I am having a problem I cannot figure out, I have tried different things. I am not sure what to do. I have roms loaded into my files etc. What my problem is, I click to play a game, it tries to start then freezes or goes back to the menu screen. I try different game it doesnt start but goes back to menus listing all the roms in that get, IE, SNES, or nes, etc. ANY idea what I may need to do. AS I SAY I am a complete newbie so please explain it like I am a 5 year old.. Thank You
Hi. How to your restore a controller deck to its original settings? I screwed my whole configuration, including the player’s one and two buttons and the coin buttons. I’m currently running on Raspberry pi 4.5 on retro pi. I can’t even exit games using my top row buttons, like I’ve done before.
Have you (or anyone else here) ever had controller lag in your retropi? I'm trying to play NES Punch Out and SNES Mario Kart on my pi, but the delay in my controller makes it almost impossible. Any help would be much appreciated
maybe a little off topic, but do you know why certain things may be laggy on some images? specifically kodi, and psx? on all my own images that i built from scratch everything is smooth sailing, but i've tried some of yours and everything stock thats already on there works great, but then throwing on kodi, almost nothing works, and with psx i'm getting crazy sound glitches and lag. any help would be appreciated!
I'm having a issue a set my hot key binds for pause and frame skip x and z and c on my sega controller and accidentally saved it because I was testing frameahead running and now every time I change those commands back to original it just goes back to how i dont want it every time I reset the system or try to save the commands back to z and c which is messing up me being able to play..thanks in advance
Great tutorial! thanks, I seem to have a calibration problem on one of my joysticks it has an axis drift. I've tried everything even replaced the hardware. Still the same Axsis drift problem. Is there a calibration menu or something I'm missing?
My roms don’t want to load I try to start them and it shows a grey box with configuration settings but after it loads past that it goes back to the menu

followed this guide but still having issues. My controller works fine within emulation station, it's only when I launch the game I get a message saying Controller not configured, and it doesnt allow me to do anything through the controller. Anyone knows how to fix this issue ?
Nice video my controller works great for the menu screen but does absolutely nothing once an emulator is opened. Do you have a video that explains how to set up the controller for the emulators?
My retropie isn't full ihave tried 3 controllers it all works good except when I press select and start it don't reset their game I have to unplug my retropie in order to play a different one do you know how to fix this by any chance
ive followed every step of this video exactly to a T. No matter what i do, the control do not work in attract mode. I can delete every file in this video and re-do it in ES but once i go to attract mode, the controllers do not work. Using official x360 controllers and wireless adapter. They work perfect on your 128gb images.
So I am having trouble with just player 2 once I turn on everything and try to play fighting games with 2 player the second one doesn't work I have checked and I have full signal to all buttons but I think it's a software issue can anyone help please
Have the same issue... I could not solve properly but find out something at least you are able to play. I have one very basic usb controller maybe only 1usd chinese copy...no name so small...I set it to port 0 as 1st main and xbox360usb controller to 2nd player in port 1.. ...cheap usb is controlling menu, coin and go back to emulation station desktop.... and playable for 1 Player... in the game when I hit the start button of XBOX360 controller it enters the game as 2nd player and works properly..( without analogs !! - only D-Pad)....recently saw the video and tried everything but will try to erase the all and install from bin later on.
Total Pi and Retro noob here, so bear with me. Added some games to test and all seemed well. Go in to play them and the controls are wonky. Left makes me go right. AB XY Sel Start not working. I went into emulation station and config/tools and did a reset but still the issue persists. Also controller doesn't work anymore once I go back to the retropie set up menu. Thanks in advance for any hints or help.
So dumb question but I am having issues backing out of a game. What am I missing here? So on my ps3 wireless controller, when I push start and select at same time it wont back me out of game. What do I need to do?

So I have had an issue with my Keyboard in ES & Games. Keyboard basically only functions when I am in one of the blue config screens (or any backend) but does not function on the ES menus, in Games, etc. Will that be resolved with a reset of the ES input config, or does that only reset my controller inputs?
Justin Doty You have to setup your keyboard in the ES control config for it to work in games and ES menus. If you dont it will only function in terminal and config/setups and what not.
Ah, so in other words it was already working as intended ;) I got stuck in colecovision and another system and had to hard boot and figured there was something I missed along the way. Thanks for all your work and videos like these.
Running into a new problem which I'm thinking is some sort of config issue, so i figured I'd comment here again. For the past couple days my when I exit out of an emulator, I am faced with a black screen - as if the UI has suddenly gone completely missing. I can press start to bring up the normal menu, and select if I am still in a system for that set of menus, and i can click through blindly and launch emulators, so ES is still running. But even changing UI doesn't bring it back, only restarting ES. Any thoughts? I was looking at the forum but was having trouble figuring out the right keywords to search for this issue.
