Ensure you back up any ROMs, BIOS files, and especially saves on your device before doing this. While formatting is not required for the update, it is highly recommended and if anything goes wrong, you'll want that back up. Please do not contact me for support, I'm just a third party here.

You will need access to a Windows 10 PC to perform the upgrade. Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, etc, are not compatible with the required software and other versions of Windows might require extra steps. Side loading may be possible but I haven't figured out how yet.
Notes on this process:
The hard part of this seems to be getting both drivers working on one machine. In my first attempt, I was not able to do so and I opted to force the device into fastboot mode from a Windows 11 PC then use the PhoenixSuit software to finish flashing the device on a Windows 8.1 PC. Once the driver process is smoothed out, I'm sure the entire can be scripted and run through adb/fastboot.
Windows 8.1 and older do not seem to support the ADB driver and I was unable to get that working. I tried the included drivers, google's drivers, and the xda-dev ADB Lite drivers (which is google's driver but repackaged). I have not yet tried exporting the Windows 10/11 driver to run on earlier versions of Windows, however. Windows 10/11 support the ADB driver out of the box with no installs necessary.
The fastboot driver works great on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 both 32 bit and 64 bit. Fastboot driver in Windows 11 requires disabling core-isolation in windows defender (and rebooting) and then rebooting again into driver signature enforcement mode disabled. Rebooting with driver signature enforcement mode disabled also seems to require bitlocker being disabled (or otherwise having your recovery key handy). At least it did on my machines.

Follow these steps:
0) Back up your device. This means any ROMs, BIOS files, and especially saves.
1) Extract both zips to a convenient location. Desktop, perhaps?
2) Run "PhoenixSuit.exe". Confirm the UAC prompt if recieved.
3) Plug in RPP (while booted and on the home screen) via USB to the computer.
4) Ensure that PhoenixSuit shows device connected on home tab.
a) if "No Device Attached Yet" shows, please ponder why your ADB driver isn't working. On devices where it doesn't work out of the box, I was not able to get it to install.
b) Bad cable?
5) Select "firmware" tab.
6) Click the "image" button and then find and select the extracted firmware file, e.g. "sun50iw1p1_android_p3_uart0_2023_0630.img"
7) and select "Upgrade".
8) Confirm the prompt.
a) Device will reboot into fastboot mode and begin updating the firmware.
b) The screen will be off for the remainder of this process until flashing is complete. Device IS on though.
c) Note that fastboot mode requires a different driver than than adb mode. You may need to install the PhoenixSuit included driver manually via device manager. If PhoenixSuit is being used to flash and it times out, just finish installing the driver and then click "Upgrade" again after dismissing both time-out prompts.
9) Once the device reconnects and flashing begins, you will be prompted to select a mode in PhoenixSuit.
a) update mode will install the updates without wiping data
b) flash mode will format the device and install the update, wiping data in the process. This is the recommended mode.
10) Status bar will show on screen. Once it gets 100%, device will reboot automatically. Don't forget to re-add your games.
