Free Rule of Duct Design PDF:
dedicated-thinker-541.ck.page...
When using ACCA's Manual T for register selection, there are several basic rules that are followed regarding location. Most guidelines revolve around room air circulation and stagnant air, as well as the equipment application (heating only, cooling only, or combination). Application is the largest determining factor when it comes to return air locations.

Thanks for another very good and helpful video. As a retired 50 year veteran of the HVAC industry I have found many contractors are sorely undertrained or just unprofessional. But for the pros I offer this: Many times customers are only interested in price. This becomes a brick wall when the previous estimates never mentioned duct repairs( getting the bad hi equivalent fittings out) or duct sealing. When the professional starts talking about this, the customer shuts down thinking this is just a way to inflate the price. Helpful in many cases is the great consumer oriented literature given out by the US Government. US Dept. of energy / energy star program. The great brochures are free you so you leave the brochure with them. It’s a simple fact sheet showing how the duct system and proper installation, duct sealing all make up the real system efficiency; it’s no longer you, the profit driven contractor, saying these things are important but rather The US Dept of Energy. Credibility! I’ve seen where this third party verification of what your saying sways the customer to your side, even with the price being higher than the others. I was sealing up duct systems as an option ( extra charge ) back in the 70s after the first Arab oil embargo. Consumers need more education from professionals to make an “ informed decision” Thanks.

Down in Georgia after living in Mass all my life. Cooling is not keeping up even though the units are large enough. I mentioned raising the return on the 3rd floor. (The return is on the loft floor and the peak is 13ft above that) my HVAC guy said to get higher flow filters, under cut the bedroom doors and for filtration, buy his friends stand alone water air filter. I have like 5 weeks of winter down here, I'm going to put my return as high as possible.

50% of my change outs in Philadelphia I propose completely changing the basement ductwork. Most of the ductwork is from legacy gravity/slow moving air flow systems.
@HVACProBlog
@HVACProBlog 3 года назад
Yes! Low velocity will create tremendous issues with trying to retrofit existing 'gravity' type duct systems with today's systems...condensation, mold/mildew, and an uncomfortable homeowner will all result. A room x room load calc, then Duct Run/trunk worksheet should be completed to verify the distribution will work with the new system, EVERY TIME! The trouble is, if you are doing this right, somebody will always come in lower, not fixing/replacing the duct system. Customer education early in the Sales Process is essential...Good Luck in Philly!

I have been a rough-in installer in residential new construction in KCMO for nearly 20 years. Trying to move into layout and design of new construction. I've always been taught that supply and return should be opposite. If supply is high, return is low and vice versa. We have nearly even heating and cooling seasons. Should I be more concerned with the requirements of each level? Cooling more on second floors? Heating more on lower levels?

My townhome place in Florida uses mostly cold AC. There is a large floor level return air filter and grill at the bottom of the upstairs hall that feeds the ambient air directly into the AC unit and air handler. There are also ceiling return air vents in most rooms upstairs and down. Where are these vents supposed to return the air? I have seen a lot of talk about these vents but nobody bothers to say where they return the air. Appreciate you help. Rod, Vero Beach

Low return in heating only, only makes sense if you have a large soffit in walls. 3.5 inch that also has to be internally insulated riser box in a 2x4 wall dosent work going down a 8 foot wall. The ceiling would still be better with a unit in an attic.

I have two supply ducks in my home theater and realize I need to add a event to relieve the static pressure buildup - so it technically won’t be a return - but I will add a baffle box with a vent that recycles the air close to the return outside of the room. My question is this, is it OK to put The exit vent on my knee wall instead of the ceiling? I live in the south, so I definitely want heat to leave the room.

Why isnt there tech so you can have both but an actuator closes it in the middle depending on if it’s on cool or heating mode. 😂

Is there a formula for an air return duct size in relation to the supply size in a small sealed room? In other words I will be supplying a room with 2- 6" ducts. What should the return air size be?

Question: I'm changing out my bi-fold louvered door (in front of hvac closet) for a single swing out louvered door; is there a code or general rule of thumb for recommended space size between the slats? I heard the thickness of a pencil is a good rule of thumb..there are no return ducts....thanks
@HVACProBlog
@HVACProBlog 2 года назад
Hi Mark! The space needed is based on the pressure difference between the rooms. There should be less than a +/- 5 pa difference. If there is a return and supply in both areas/rooms, then the need for louvered doors for the purpose of comfort is diminished (still needs to be balanced). Basically, if the louvers are adjustable, then open until the pressure differential is within 5pa. Same goes for the amount of 'undercutting' a door, or sizing a jump duct. Most open the door until the pressure is equal between spaces, then calculate the free area needed by measuring the door opening (lets say you opened 3", then 3"x60"=180 sq.in.). Hope that helps?!

Almost forgot - if you have a combustion appliance like a furnace or water heater in that closet - the amount of combustion air needed should be accommodated! Turn on both appliances and complete the same test, making sure you are within 5pa.

Our Sunday school room stays hot unless we cracked the door about 2 inches if I install a 12x12 grill up high would this make a difference the room is small and we don't like leaving the door cracked due to noise. Thanks

Great question KR - installing a 12"x12" register in a drop ceiling (I assume) could fix this problem for you - as long as the system has an open plenum return, pulling air from above the ceiling. The free area of this register roughly matches your 2" gap for a 72" height door. The returns may be ducted to your hallway though, and if not taken from above the ceiling with an open plenum, would mean the register would have to be ducted back to your return trunk...Good Luck with your classroom!

My apartment has a fresh air vent. It's just a 10x10 return register with a duct that leads outside. It has a filter what direction should the airflow arrow point? Into the apartment or towards the ceiling? They had it facing the ceiling shouldn't it be filtering the air coming into the apartment?

If it's _returning_ to the system, you're correct of course. [Edit] Your fresh air vent is a "make up vent," used to supply the HVAC with fresh outside air. You can achieve load balancing with out it (because that's a different topic) so if we ignore for the moment how it's different ... it's similar to the returns. Meaning, you have supply ductwork, you need corresponding return ductwork that draws air either from inside the house or outside. There are humidity and heat implications with both solutions, and one isn't a substitute for the other.

If I have a return air in my wall and with no ducts leading like literally just a return vent and then you see the inside of my walls. Why? My house was built in 1988.
@HVACProBlog
@HVACProBlog 2 месяца назад
Hi @shirleypineda9726 ! Thanks for watching my content. Although ok at the time (1988), this is using the wall cavity as your return duct and would not meet today's installation codes. The wall cavity is extremely leaky and will be taking more air from unwanted areas, not only from your conditioned space...
