I absolutely believed the father’s desperation when he was trying to hold the gate open for his son. Sometimes a single moment of honesty elevates an entire film.
melinda clarke was so freakin hot in this movie. that whole section in the waterway and the sewers haunted me for years because it is such a real world location and i could see myself there, so id have nightmares about running away from zombies in a sewer. Agreed that it is better than it deserved to be
Amazing film. The skinny guy zombie was actually a homeless guy that the director found near the LAX airport. He already looked so much like a zombie they basically put him in a costume lolz 🤣
I love Return of the Living Dead 3. The tragic love story was a nice touch, with Melinda Clarke as a rather attractive zombie. Sarah Douglas' brief CEO role was pretty cool.
Yeah it was interesting. A smaller more intimate story….which isn’t something I thought I would ever say about a zombie film. Pretty good movie. Deserves a bit more recognition for trying something different.
This is my favorite movie in the series. It was originally going to be called Mortal Zombie (a more accurate title imo) but they went with Return of the Living Dead 3 for brand recognition. Despite the name it really is its own thing which is why I love it so much.
Part 3 is the best sequel in my opinion It acts as a great parallel to the first movie. where instead of a teen couple losing each other to the zombie virus, they fight for each other in spite of it. It also acts as a decent finale to the original series, revealing the purpose of the trioxin gas and destroying the last remaining zombie barrels. (I don't care if Necropolis says there are more)
I was 19 when this came out; a perfect age for Melinda Clarke's character to cause me a great deal of confusion. On the back of Lynnea Quigley's performance in the first. . . I'm sure I'm perfectly fine. ;)
Yuzna is a better director than he’s given credit for. I would’ve love to see him tackle a Friday the 13th or Child’s Play sequel. Or, elevate him with one of the sequels to The Crow.
I always wanted a sequel to the reboot. With him in his zombified variation from Jason Lives. And have him meet Roy Burns who surfaces after Jason's supposed death. Actually have them come face to face. I just want to see the mask with the two blue stripes. And the guy who played Jason in the reboot did a great job. He seems like a fun person to work with.
This flick brings me back to catching it on HBO or Cinemax or having to seeing it on the shelf at my local Blockbuster…good times…Julie definitely got that sexy metal/goth vibes…good review on this awesome 90’s zombie movie 💯🤙🏽🤩
I loved this film. It was better than part 2, imo. Don't get me wrong. I love part 2's camp, but part 3 brought the horror back, while still having its camp and unintentional humor, which pairs flawlessly with the first film.
Yuzna wanted to make a sequel titled: ROTLD 4 Hell Mary. “The set-up had something to do with runaway kids in an underground Goth club in Hollywood, who hear about the now mythic romantic story of ‘Curt and Julie’ and the rumor of a group of disaffected teens living behind the barriers of the city, which the military has sealed off to contain the rampaging living-dead pandemic. Once inside the apocalyptic downtown, they find the group headed by a girl called Hell Mary-cruel, merciless and sexy-who has learned to live with the pain of being dead.”
It's interesting you mention Resident Evil, Code Veronica is heavily inspired by ROTLD 3. Pretty sure Steve Burnside was based on Kurt, his Dreamcast model is nearly a 1 - 1. He even tries to play cooler than he really is for the girl. The bandersnatch is visually inspired by the zombie with its arm fused to its chest. And finally, the intro of the movie is recreated in a cutscene that takes place in the military training facility.
Speaking of Yuzna, how many of you have seen Necronomicon? This movie never gets talked about (that i'm aware of), and it's really good. It's either underrated or way overlooked.
When I was a kid I would stare at the poster at the Hollywood video I would always goto with my grandma. I was always captivated by the way Julie looked and never knew if she was a vampire or something.
that zombie at the beginning has to be a sean connery zardoz reference with the outfit lol. i have owned this movie forever, but just started watching it after watching this video. i am a completionist... i have 4 & 5 but never watched those too lol
While the 2nd was not bad but not as great as the 1st one, the 3rd one i enjoyed way better and my 2nd introduction to Melinda Clark, 1st one was in Spawn. What i like about the 3rd one is how it takes place in a secret facility run by the army that gives me very Resident Evil 2 vibes especially at the sewer scenes and the 3rd act where all the zombies are escaping.
I'm a big fan of this. After the underwhelming Part 2, this was a great change of pace. I will admit the opening scenes in the government facility looked EXTREMELY cheap and I was a bit weary at first, but the various locations after that (like the outdoor stuff and the sewers), were much better.
I have a very vivid memory of this movie. I was Child and while having dinner with mom I see on local Canal 9 (Argentina) that they will show this at late night. I ask mom if I could watch it and ask her also to remember me about it if I miss the Hour. Watched it alone in mi Room and get scared as shiiii*** couse of the Gore elements. Specially the Robotized (?) Zombies at the end. Got nightmares about it. I always fought about this movie when I Play RE2, OG Leon looks a bit like the guy and the Lab and secret instalation have a NEST feel in it. Thanks for remember me that mom never forbiden me to see any movie as well ajajaj
Are ppl actually not liking this awesome movie!!?? I love this movie, always did and always will and the ROTLD trilogy (yes i said trilogy) are the best zombie movies ever!!!.... and the movie poster brings back some great memories!
The main thing the movie breaks of the pretty set rules of the series is that the zombies don't seem to spread through bite. We have no humans ever turning into zombies in the original & its sequal with them being able to leave the dead just about without fear of them two re-awakening. This is supported by the fact that Tarman in the 1st movie is alone when they go to the phone & the man who was a punk stays dead, same with the other punk who dies & the paramedics & police that get sent in to the area. The only humans that do turn are the two idiots who released the tri-oxen in both movies but we can assume this is due to exposure to the chemical directly. we can also see trash turn into a zombie but her fate is likely due to her being exposed to the rain fully by not wearing anything as this would explain the paramedics who wore coats & she likely turned in the mud. This pretty well explains why the main threat in this series was the zombies near invinciblity (I'd say the best way to kill them is to dissolve them in acid as that way we'd likely not have risk of rain). The reason the spreading doesn't really make sense is due to the zombies being the product of a nerve agent reactivating their well nerves & as long as a brain exists & a nervious system exists they can reanimate. Which means the amount in a zombies siliva or bones or blood is likely too little to cause it to spread unless you where to say burn the bodies releasing the pure chemicals into the air.
It's not great but it is a very good film and memorable as you mentioned it isn't really a Return of the living dead film but is so more than parts 4&5.. Definitely well worth a watch for those that haven't. I was 1st introduced to it a year or so before it reached the UK in Fangoria and was very excited for it. It delivered on all that was promised with some great designs and FX
Return of the Living Dead 3 offered a great premise w the poster, merging zombies w the 90s modern primitive body piercing aesthetic - but when this creature finally appeared, she turned out to be seriously underwhelming - during that time it was still anathema to deliver an actual badass female monster (or hero, for that matter) - the ferocious Death Factory movies actually deliver on the promise
Should have covered chud 2 aka the first script that was originally Rotld3 (rewatxh chud 2 and you'll go "oh shit it is" you can even tell 2 characters would have returned also)

I always love return of the living dead 3 because it was a love story too n plus the guy who played the homeless man played in a one of steven segal movie also too n also this movie is titanic with zombie especially the ending of the movie😎😎😎😎❤❤❤❤
As much as I like ROTLD 3 the one thing that ruins it for me is the fact they changed the rules established in the previous films without explaining why. It was only hinted at that the Trioxin used in the movie was not the same version as the prior movies. If they simply had a few lines about using a new kind of Trioxin it would wipe out the continuity issues regarding Trioxin itself. I mean even the awful 4th and 5th movie tried to somewhat explain why the Trioxin in those movies had different effects as it was Trioxin-5 not 2-4-5 Trioxin.
But she was already dead for, like, A WHILE before she is exposed to the gas, she should not have come back with as much brain power as she had. would have made way more sense if she was exposed the gas earlier in the air vent scene. Also, yeah her body would have been able to move as well as any other trioxin zombie, but she should basically be a bobble head in a back window if that neck breaking sound and "my neck hurts" means anything.
ROTLD is by far one of my favorite horrors of ALL TIME. I rewatched it all the time, and it's my go-to July 4th holiday go to. 2 is fun at times, but I hardly return to it - but 3 is fantastic. It really hit me when it came out, probably because I was a confused teen - beautiful, Bonner confusing zombie - fun kills and solid pacing make it a good entry.
I absolutely love this movie, to me, it is a classic, and my favorite return movie, for all the reasons that make it different than the others. I like how it is more serious, and of course, it doesn't hurt that I fell in love with Melinda clark, while watching it for the first time.
A zombie romance... which is definitely a unique spin. I grew up with this one and always loved it. A couple of years ago picked up the Vestron release of it, and very happy with it! Julie was always the absolute hottest in this one!
THE movie to get your GF into zombie flicks. not to mention, she's pretty much THE goth girl, on par with Elvira, and we men of culture know what that mean ;)
Return Of the Living Dead 2 is not really a good movie and strays from the original more than three does. It's definitely more fun and better than Return Four or Five, but I feel like most people would say that Three is the best of the Return sequels.
Part 3 is the only one I watched enough times to remember what happened I'm not even positive I've seen the first two.The redhaired girl is what I think made the movie great and memorable as much as Brandon Lee made The Crow what it is, without her I don't believe this movie would even be being discussed right now
Still has one of my favorite nude scenes in cinema history. The scene where Julia and the boyfriend are talking after having sex where we literally see Julie's breasts slumped to the sides of her chest and then being hidden when she sits up to start talking to him about whats on his mind. Her chest isn't visible just for the sake of nudity but to further showcase the intimacy between these two characters.
I agree that it's not as good as the first one, it's one of the best zombie films ever made, it's a Hell of a lot better the the second, that one's like a pathetic attempt at a remake as a goosebumps/Nickelodeon Halloween special, the first and third are the only ones worth watching.
I remember that when I was a kid I wish they would have made another one featuring her before she turn into zombie and I wish you would have survived in the end to find a cure before the most part my favorite movie out of all the other ones
