I love catching those suckers on that stretch of river. It’s always a big surprise when you hook into one, but the lack of fight automatically tells you it’s not a trout. Still fun to catch though. Another great video. Cheers!
Thanks! They are definitely fun and different. Depending on the flow and season, you’re definitely in for a battle. Upstream freight train somedays! Special fish for sure 👍
Excellent video on so many levels....WTG!!! I've fished the Deschutes many, many times although I'm not a local. I love the way you release & that's a great example for others. The part starting at 4:30 in the vid is clearly the hike along the old tracks downstream from Mack's. I did that a few times and did OK but never had stellar results. I usually had good results from Mack's to Shearers' and also hiking the tracks side upstream from Maupin. I haven't been for some years so I guess I gotta get back soon. BTW, I hear the market in town has been totally transformed and is now really nice. I've also heard that my fave campgrounds downstream from the falls have been dozed! Thanks for this vid. I'm highly inspired!
Thanks! Hoping to pass along my own techniques and learn new ways of keeping the fish and rivers healthy! The market is awesome 👍 lots of water to explore! Have fun!
I appreciate that! I’m happy to answer any specific questions that I can, you’re welcome to swing by the shop, or even book a guided trip! A lot of these videos are just me sharing my days on the river, but hopefully I’ll have the opportunity to make some more educational videos soon! Thanks!
He tips them out of the net so he never touches them. Fish have a protective layer and touching them (especially with dry hands) removes that layer which can actually lead to them being more prone to infections.
All the things! @123meaghanb is spot on. Keep um wet and in a big net! I only handle maybe 2% and that’s with the upmost care and minimal time. Lots of respect to these fish, we want them healthy. I also like to gauge that they’ve recovered enough for a strong release. 👍
