First of all, to those kind viewers who let me know about the audio issues with the previous upload, you're the best, thank you for the heads up! Re-uploaded and audio issues are all sorted, a dumb mistake I made during export was causing the issue, all fixed now!
So....with that out the way...
Hey Gang, hoping that you're all doing well!
I'm back with my latest review and one that's genuinely taken months to put together, this is a LONG review because Return To Dark Tower has so much to it that needs mentioning.
This game is the spiritual sequel and modern remake of Milton Bradley's Dark Tower, which I reviewed previously. And Restoration Games, my goodness, they threw everything at this. The minis are beautiful, the art gorgeous and the tower! It has lights, it makes sounds, it plays music depending on what you're doing! It's a real technological leap forward for what board games can be.
I knew I wanted the miniatures painted for this game and make the game look its best. The process of filming this though?....its been a nightmare! You can quite easily write into a script or review something that you've observed in a game through playing it numerous times...but for that thing to happen? and to catch it on camera? Yeah, it's taken an enormous amount of patience to capture everything about this game. I hope though that you enjoy it.
What else have I been up to? Well, I've enough reviews in the pipeline to bring me up to episode 99, and episode 100? It's been written and I've started to record it, I've made sure to pick something special for that one. Took charge of a few new games into the collection that I've been playing and enjoying and starting to pen down impressions and get reviews together for them too, games FAR easier to film than this! Enjoy this review and I'll be back soon with another
Keep on gaming,
Luke

I backed the second kickstarter and got everything they offered. It was worth every penny, including the neoprene playmat. I finally got a chance to play it tonight after getting it from Fedex about 3 weeks ago. My son and I played through the coop 2 player Ashstrider scenario tonight and it took about 2 hours. We even had to stop while I ran to pickup chinese takeout and the app allowed us to save our game and turn everything off, then pickup where we left off later. This game was absolutely a blast to play. It really reinvigorated my old love for tabletop gaming. I would give this game a 9/10 and it has near infinite replay ability with the expansions. Restoration Games knocked it out of the park with this game. It's just plain fun and the app and tower are a blast working together! Love it!

Fantastic review! You really sold me on the game. I got a chance to play this a year or so ago and it was a very memorable experience. Just the kind of thing I'm always looking for in a game, a combination of fun mechanics and tangible theme. I'd love to get this one some day but for now I'll have to just beg my buddy to bring it to Gencon for another go this year!

You're going to really enjoy it. I've got plans to review the add ons for the game, currently painting up the dark horde figure pack... it's been a long slog :D but I've got all the expansions, plus I've got the Mazes Dark Tower RPG coming too, lots of Dark Tower goodness!

Yet another great video 😀 good job Luke! All I can say is hats off to Restoration games. As much as i'm a nostalgia addict, paying the price for the original Dark Tower(as well Fireball Island) on ebay is, well, i'd be better off buying groceries lol. Big thanks to RG to (somewhat hehe) save my wallet with great games!

Great review 😊. I wish this company would remake "The Lost Valley of the Dinosaurs" with the exploding lava from the volcano the T-rexs hunting your figures, the swamp monster and the irritating flying Dino.... aaaah memories of this game as a child.

Thanks for the reupload! This is a great episode, BUT the whole App-Stuff sounds like a huge turn-off for me. I liked it more when the tower did all that. And there‘s no offline mode then? Kind of defeating the purpose of a board game:D
@downfromtheattic
@downfromtheattic 9 месяцев назад
I can understand your hesitation, admittedly I was a little on the fence about owning an app driven game which is why I bough just the base game. I've played other board games with apps like Beasts of Balance and Descent. Descent, if you had the inclination you could play that whole game on the app and never get the game out. Dark Tower, the app is part the gameplay, but not it entirely. Whilst it does control battles and the tower's attacks, the game is more to do with how you as players respond to these, it's kind of like a digital dungeon master. I can get it though, if you're wanting a device free night, probably not going to be your thing

Yeah, huge no no for me too. Iam used to buy boardgame htat i like, try few games and shelv it for year or two. Not that i dislike it but dont have much of a time so this year we are playing a lot of "old" games like Quack of quedlingburg, Descent, gloomhaven, Potion explosion and Everdel. Iam affraid that when i buy app depedent game then after year or two i cant run it for app discontinuity...
@downfromtheattic
@downfromtheattic 9 месяцев назад
@@rattusludus8528 I can agree, it's a pricy game and it's probably not going to come down with waiting for a price drop. You concern regarding the app and it becoming unusable, Justin over at Restoration has said that they'll make the app open source :) So the fans of the game will still be able to make the app work for many many years to come :)

I did enjoy - in fact, I undid my thumbs‐up just so I could thumbs‐up again!! ✌😁👍 In my opinion, 37 minutes is dauntingly long for a review…but as is your custom, you kept it moving, with no dull spots or fluffy filler, and so it didnʼt feel its length - it felt informative, involving, and fun. I congratulate you again!! My warm reception of the video comes amid serious qualms about the subject. Like my fellow respondent Lord of Clarkness, Iʼm not crazy about board games requiring phone or tablet apps; I feel a game should be self‐contained, save perhaps standard conventional equipment such as timers, notepads, checkerboards, and - yes - lazy Susans. I donʼt know what the additional cost would have been (already steep, this Tower - yikes!!), but I would have preferred a tower unit with control functions à la the original Dark Tower, even if it meant jettisoning the bells‐and‐whistles graphics. I wonʼt buy Return to Dark Tower - but if someone in my game group acquires a copy, Iʼm nevertheless willing to play it. 😉 As it is, the new Dark Tower unit is indeed a marvel. I especially like the gameʼs skulls mechanic - it invokes classic iconography while mixing manual placement with an unusual electronically controlled dice‐tower‐like effect, all with significant gameplay impact and creepy overtones. Nice that you got this episode out to us in Halloween month… 💀 Looking forward to more attic adventures!

Finally got around to getting a copy of this game + expansions, The only thing I don't like is the game board artwork as it is very muted/washed out and from a short distance just looks like a bunch of coloured areas compared to the original edition game board artwork. There are some photos of the prototype Return To Dark Tower game board that can be found by doing a easy search, the prototype version of the game board looks a lot better then the final version as it's colours are more vibrant and the artwork on the board is more clearly defined, still this one aspect aside Return To Dark Tower is a triumph in game design.

I saw this game in my local game store the other day for over $100 less than the lowest price I have seen on Amazon. Looks really nice but I don't like for games to rely on apps and external devices. But,, I would really like to get this game. I wonder if the price will come down after Christmas?

As far as the battery life goes, invest in rechargeable batteries. I can get about 3 games from a single charge. I've heard the "battle reward" criticism before. Remember, this is a threat management game. The reward is one less threat on the board. And those threats get stronger over time, so it's better to remove it early. Love this game though. High price, but I've played it over 60 times so far between my family and friend group, so it's becoming easier to justify the price. Definitely a standout of my board game collection!
@downfromtheattic
@downfromtheattic 5 месяцев назад
Oh I recommend the Ikea rechargeable batteries, they've been excellent for this game and last around 3 games before needing a recharge. That's a fair assessment, it is a threat management game, as I said in the review "putting out fires as they crop up" and I can see the argument there for it being one less threat on the board. Have you played the recent Covenant expansion for Dark Tower? I feel that it's the best of both worlds in that you manage the threat of monsters but in doing so, you're fulfilling a requirement for building one of the new monuments. For example, defeating a monster next to the tower gives an offering to one of the monuments, 3 of these offerings and the monument is built granting addition buffs and stats to all players. It rewards players for battling but in a wider scope than just spirit tokens or men etc. Also makes players think carefully and tactfully about when and where they battle. Big fan of Covenant, I'd recommend it!
@incandescentdream
@incandescentdream 5 месяцев назад
Yes! My family loves the monuments. Our only bit of criticism is how quickly the wastes spread with no way to remove them. But it does motivate you to build monuments as quickly as possible!@@downfromtheattic

So wait, it went from the tower being the core of the game, to an app and a crap ton of cards and tokens being the core of the game, and the tower being a centerpiece?
@jonathandixon2896
@jonathandixon2896 5 месяцев назад
I do think that the tower is definitely still the core as the game simply can't function without it, and is what players are interacting with most of the time. I'd also say that the vast majority of the time playing is spent around the board populated with occasional, quick diversions to the screen for stuff like cashing in quests and battles (which are normally over in about a minute). In that light, I think the app is good at removing a lot of the manual busywork (such as deciding how and when monsters spawn/act) as well as taking on the roles that previously relied quite heavily on the imagination of the players in the original game.

Army Painter grey I think? I used my standard citadel paints but I'm planning to use my Army Painter Speedpaints on the dark horde, that's probably going to be black primer drybrushed white or just white depending on the figure

Admittedly, a game like this is a bit too complicated for me but I really liked how the original game worked and could appreciate the immersion a game like that provides. The new game's overreliance an app, which could cease to work or be available at some point, does seem a bit incongruent with the ambience and time period of the game and break immersion.

Great solo game, really boring multiplayer. Played it 4 player, and it basically turned to everyone sitting playing on their phone, while the active player is clicking around on the ipad. We tried at first sharing what was going on, but that become very unengaging. If you play Multiplayer, you MUST be casting the app to the big screen where everyone can see it. Everyone was glad when we suddenly lost, when 8 skulls all came out on one side of the board.

Bzzzzzzt! Looked great until the "app" was mentioned. This is a big no no for board games, as the app will soon be orphaned and game becomes a paperweight.
