Chick was awesome on the first track. I understand what you are saying about the guitarist it’s not as smooth on the ear Jeff Berlin. makes Bass playing look so easy. I have always admired Jimmy Herring and & Mahavishnu John McLaughlin who had an issue with his hand or hands in the past few years. Which I believe has been improved via some healing teacher 👍 1970’s acoustic Shakti is astonishing I will request something very soon !! so Sad Chick & George are no longer with us george who played with Stanley Clarke on several projects as-well as Frank Zappa (does humour belong in music you bet it does lol) Frank Zappa loved Allan Holdsworth it’s easy to see why. I Enjoyed this Jazz Fusion Marathon 😀👍🙏

Nick, The Bruford Tapes is a great record but know that Allan Holdsworth had already left the band. His replacement is The Unknown John Clark and he’s equally amazing because he sounds like Allan using a Les Paul with No Whammy Bar. I saw the concert 42 years ago and was blown away. Holdsworth is on: Bill Bruford:Feels Good To Me One Of A Kind Rock Goes To College live dvd. Then he’s gone for: Gradually Going Tornado which is phenomenal too.

I'm not a guitar player, but I totally agree with your analysis of Kazumi and Berlin. I don't understand how Jeff plays the bass at the level that he does. His bass playing with Bruford just blew my mind, and by Bruford, I'm referring to the band, Bruford. I do think Kazumi is a very skilled guitar player, but I wasn't as moved, or blown away by it, as I am with someone like Holdsworth or Di Meola, or John McLaughlin. Lastly, Cobham is just a beast on the drums.

Space Circus is from RTF's Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy Album. Bill Connors is a great player, but he recorded for that one album and toured w/them. But I understand he did not like touring and bailed on RTF. After that he kind of went the way Steely Dan went. Studio only. I'm still not sure how that went cause I lost touch with him. I have some of his work post RTF. I need to revisit that. Now if you want to see something with Bill Bruford, Jeff Berlin, Allan Holdsworth, and Dave Stewart(Keys) you must check out the video Bill Bruford Rock Goes to College. A video filmed at a University in the UK (1979), a great show. They do Beelzebub live and other material from their latest album at the time. I think that's Feels Good To Me, I could be wrong. Anyway, the Jimmy Herring, John McLaughlin pairing I knew about but I completely missed their two bands combining to do Mahavishnu Orchestra material. It was also the last chance to see McLaughlin playing in the US. Damn!!! I am still hurting from that. Yes, George Duke was a Jazz Keyboardist who could sing. His musical arsenal included: Gospel, Soul, R&B injected with a heavy dose of greasy party FUNNNK. He worked with Frank Zappa during the late '60s and from '73 to '75( check out: Inca Roads(live)). He also worked with Billy Cobham after the Original Mahavishnu Orchestra broke up. In 1976 they did a live show together at Montreux Jazz Festival, you definitely should check that out.

It's too bad that there wasn't other footage of Bill Conners era R.T.F. available, but you had already heard him in his so called Holdsworth period, and he comes off much better on the Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy album and Stanley Clarke's first solo album. Also a young Lenny White on that video. I put the Kazumi Watanabe on because of Jeff Berlin's solo. I wonder why Bruford and Berlin would play with him if he was that bad. McLaughlin chose to play his farewell U.S. tour with Jimmy Herring because he said he hadn't seen anyone else really do justice to Mahavishnu material after Herring covered one of his songs on an album. You heard George Duke on keyboards and lead vocals on "Inca Roads", the first Zappa song you reacted to, and you will see him and J.L.Ponty in the upcoming Zappa video from 1973. When Jerry Goodman was playing violin for Mahavishnu, Jean Luc Ponty was with Zappa, and the bands toured as a double bill. I also saw the George Duke / Billy Cobham Band in 1976, when a long haired, wah wah playing John Schofield was their guitarist. I think this Cobham footage is better than the older videos of his big Mahavishnu drum feature song "One Word" (but they are worth checking out, plus the one with Herbie Hancock on "Hurricane"). I always liked the performances on that Holdsworth REH video.

A couple of reasons Connors was unhappy in the band that I read about back in the day was that besides his dislike of touring, Corea made him uncomfortable by pushing Scientology at him. I read more recently that 10% of their earnings had to be donated to the organization. Another requirement was that after each gig they would have meetings where the band members had to critique their own performances, and say how they could improve. I wonder if Connors was often singled out. Drummer Vinnie Colaiuta has a podcast, (Breakfast With Vinnie), and on episode 15 (June 21/21) John McLaughlin talks about a night many years ago when Corea was pushing Scientology at him, while McLaughlin was trying to turn Corea on to his guru, Sri Chinmoy. McLaughlin also talks about Miles Davis and Tony Williams.

Also Billy Cobham was the first drummer, that I saw playing with 4 sticks - awesome. I'm a YES fan who thought Bill Bruford was the best drummer I had ever heard when he was teamed up with Chris Squire to form the best "Rhythm Section" in Progressive Rock. I absolutely loved his experimental approach, which was a perfect compliment to Chris' dominant Industrial-Melodic bass playing. You could tell they inspired each other. Bill's timely inspirations drew your attention to the drummer as one of the band's key components. But when he left YES to join King Crimson and to pursue all of his other projects, I quickly lost interest in The Story of Bill Bruford, for he sounded just like a million other jazz fusion drummers & jazz didn't impress me as much more than skilled musicians who politely wait for their turn to try to one-up each other with an extended solo. For me, it was background music at best. But to each his own, eh?

First off these guitar players are fusion players and the fusion refers to the fusion of jazz and rock and while I can appreciate where guys like McLaughlin are coming from they come more from the rock side of things. If you want to hear jazz guitarists then you need to listen to Herb Ellis, Joe Pass, Jim Hall and Grant Green to name but a few. If you don't know the work of these guitar players then you don't really know jazz and you don't know the greats of the instrument. Coming from a German background you need to dig into the ECM catalog. If you know that label then you will know the roots of modern jazz. Pat Metheny and Chick Corea came to audiences through that label and in my opinion it was the Blue Note of the 70's right up till today. And you can't say you know jazz if you don't know Blue Note. You really need to play and react to the giants of jazz like Miles Davis and Tony Williams so that your viewers can understand the true "jazz" side of jazz rock fusion. Saying that jazz guitarists are better than rock musicians is like comparing apples to oranges. I grew up listening to Miles and Clapton and each are great in their own right. In fact any great jazz player will tell you that rock is based on the blues and so is jazz. Just ask Louis Armstrong what jazz would be without the blues. There is still a mountain of artists you need to listen to before you can really understand how all music is interconnected. You said yourself you only discovered Steely Dan a few years ago. I started listening to them 50 years ago. I don't mean to criticize but i play guitar and I get a little miffed when people try to rank artists as better or worse than other artists. The first group you showed (Return To Forever) had two legends (Stanley Clarke and Chick Corea) so I'm sure any guitarist would be hanging back in that situation. All guitarists have to ask themselves how they would have performed in that situation. Sorry to have a negative reaction to your criticism but I'm just saying try not get caught up the game of putting a good player down because they don't shine next to a legendary one but this is just MHO.

Yeah, that's nice BUT it pales in comparison to this RTF lineup. Try this. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VJsD62EUwDI.html

I love all of the guys you have on here and fusion music. But this is not them at their best to me . The great tracks have tunes these are just riffs with solo's over the top. These are the death of a great art form only because the artists thought that their musician ship was enough to sustain it .
