I watched nearly the entire movie being filmed in Port Townsend, Washington in the summer of 1980 working on an article for the LA Times. Lou Gossett talked to anyone and everyone, and even played on the local softball team. He is a great human being.
Amen to that, I am a military vet, that was one of the best performances of military I have ever seen, usually Hollywood dolls it all up and botches it, He made the movie I think.
One of my favorite movies all time. I'm from Arkansas and in 2005, I went on a west coast motorcycle ride for a month and stopped in Port Townsend to see some of the places where the movie was filmed. Rest in peace Lou!
I was an extra in the movie. I was able to meet this fine gentleman. He was the nicest, most humble guy you could ever meet. What a true American treasure!
I grew up there . I auditioned for a small part , Deborah Winger's younger sister . They called me to tell me that they were impressed by my reading but that unfortunately I read a little too old for the part . They said , "Know that , had you been just a bit younger , we would have loved you for the part..." . Some crazy Hollywood celeb stories that occurred ... But I won't divulge ... just , damn .
I loved this movie. ..I'm 63. YEARS OLD NOW ☺️🌹🙏 I LET MY SON WATCH IT. NOW ! OF COURSE HE'S JUST GETTING OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL I LIKE TO SEE HIM DO SOMETHING REALLY GREAT IN HIS LIFE JUST FOR HIM TO UNDERSTAND. HE HAS THE RIGHT. TO. MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION .BUT NOT BAD DECISION..!!! 🏆THIS IS MOVIE HAD HONORABLE CONSTRUCTIVE LEADERSHIP MENTORSHIP UNITY, YES WORKING TOGETHER HELPING ONE ANOTHER TO MAINTAIN A PRODUCTIVE LIFE WITH INTEGRITY AND SAFETY FOR THE COUNTRY KEEPING IT SAFE..IS PRIORITY.. ( A GOOD TEACHER NEVER TEACH YOU EVERYTHING..). WE WIN WE WON TOGETHER. OR WE MAY ALL FALL..❤️
I lived in Port Townsend in 1989, beautiful town and beautiful area. I spent a lot of time exploring around Fort Warden State Park. I remember how artsy and funky downtown was at the time.
Blues'n with the Bird We lived in the beautiful San Juan islands area ( Anacortes ) for 3 years. Taking the ferry with our dog to the other islands and great locations ( swimming in Fort Worden ) was a great weekend treat. Always feel sentimental about this movie.
I served on the Coast Guard Cutter Pt. Bennett in Port Townsend in 1980. It's everything they described and more, especially with all the search & rescue missions I remember. But there was time to explore, and all those places bring back memories to me.
I was raised 1000 feet from the back gate to Fort Warden, it's actually a old soldier cemetery. Dont forget to check out memories vault in the upper bunkers, oddly it looks like a alter...
While watching this I couldn't help to think of that other movie with that real mean drill sergeant from ' Full Metal Jacket " ; Gossett's character played a more respectful one in my books.
During filming, some dear friends of mine invited the cast and support crew to a dinner at their old victorian house in PT (I was not there! drat!). Except for the major stars...my friends said that many showed up and honored them with their presence....you don't forget that.
I thought it was one of the most realistic depictions of training I've ever seen. They looked like naval officers and drill instructors. Very realistic. Deborah Wenger was never more beautiful. Richard Gere was never more handsome. What a combination!
Fish, clam and more Visit the great site of that great movie often The grass fields where you filmed 100 of deer daily We share with them apples Thanks for the share as well.🤗
It's a great film and it would have been a lot worse without Lois Gossett, as he played the best role in the fiilm. Also Port Townsend sounds like where I live in England, in the far north west, rains a lot, faded 19th century town centre, one big empoyer.
What's so eerie is that in An Officer & A Gentleman, Sgt. Foley warns the guys about The Girls who get pregnant to grab a Man, and in Roots he tries to tell Toby over and over that they can't run away and be free as much as they want to be.
