I am returning to Alaska by motorcycle in 2024 and I need to start thinking about packing for the adventure. In this video we talk about the clothing and mid-layers I am going to take with me.

Thanks for the insights on what you pack for a long ride bike trip. Very informative... as I would like to take my first long distance trip on my 2016RT in the near future.

You might consider adding a set of HippoHands. I experimented with a set of DIY covers using mylar bubble-wrap and Gorilla tape, but bought the real thing when I found myself wearing summer gloves in cold-ish wet weather and actually feeling my heated grips. On one trip through the CA central valley it was upper 90s so I took them off and stored them under a bungie net behind me. They're easy on/off once set up, and you don't have to worry about batteries or wires failing (which to me is perfect because I like to keep things simple.) Good luck on your next run up.

Your packing regimen is very close to mine. I use LDComfort products also. I carry two sets and wash one set each evening and let it start to dry and alternate sets since in humid areas it takes more than 12 hours to dry. Alternating gives me a dry set each morning. A mesh riding jacket and pants and boots and gloves complete the riding gear, except for rain gear. I actually use the rain gear more for cold than for rain. I found that with a LDComfort shirt, mesh riding jacket and rain coat for a wind breaker, I can ride all day in 50 degree temps. Add my windbreaker over my t-shirt and I can ride quite some time down to 32 degrees. I try to avoid riding below freezing for obvious reasons. Having the rain gear serve double duty as cold weather gear, saves having to carry bulky thermal liners. My wife carries hers as she gets more wind than me, but I have never needed mine and we have ridden in temps as cold as 21 degrees while entering Yellowstone a few Septembers ago. For street clothes, I take 7 sets of socks, underwear, and t-shirts so I can do laundry every 6-7 days. I started packing Khaki pants rather than jeans as they are lighter and pack more tightly. I also take Khaki shorts for warmer days and a swim suit. I add one double-knit shirt if we decide to eat at a fancier restaurant some evening. I include a set of sneakers and a wind breaker and that completes the set. My swim suit does double duty as the separator between clean and dirty clothes. I fully unpack my bag each night of the clean clothes and then add that day’s dirty clothes. I then spread out my swim shorts as the separator on top of the dirty clothes and then repack my clean clothes on top. This method has worked well for me and makes it easy on laundry day as I just remove everything down to the swimsuit and take the bag to the laundry. My wife does much the same with her bag (we each get one saddlebag liner for clothes). We then use the top case bag for bulkier things like our shoes, windbreakers, thermal liners and our toiletries. Also, we carry our iPads and chargers in the top case. We have a bag that fits the rack on top of our top case and that carries our rain gear for ready access, the bike cover, air compressor and motorcycle jumper cables. I created foam cutouts for the bottom of both of my side cases that carry my tools in an organized way and sit under the side bag liners which helps keep the tools in place. Works well on a touring bike with two side cases, a top case and a top case rack. I also bought a tank bag early on, but found it not needed and often just got in the way of seeing the GPS and mounting and dismounting the bike. I haven’t used the tank bag in years and likely won’t use it again unless we find a need to carry something beyond our current set of gear.

Always need to pack some 'space' 😉 I seem to remember you used to use 'Under Armour' base layers?? I could be wrong, my memory is not what it was 🤔 A very well thought out 'set up'. I always wear long sleeve and long 'tights' as my base layer, whatever the weather, although it never gets super hot where I've been.

Yes many years ago, but I switched to LDComfort in 2017, for the last Alaska trip. Still use Under armour for every day.

You definitely have clothing and riding gear down to an art form! especially for the unpredictable weather. That Klim Gore Tex shell is really cool. I have a yellow/black one like yours, and I wear it over my Marrakesh jacket when temps are under 60 because its also windproof and breathable. Is this your first long trip with a heated liner? It would be interesting to get your take on it.

Thanks for the "look inside the panniers" video. What do like to wear under your Darien pants? Jeans? Shorts? Just your LC Comfort?

Seems you got the packing down well. Would be interesting to know what you are not taking on this trip that you did take on your previous adventure. Is that a photo of Greg Lemond/Bernard Hinault in your living room?
