Worked remotely for a global corporation for years receiving accolades, raises, bonuses, etc. New ‘try-hard’ manager insisted that we come in even though he was remote from a different city. The utter filth of hoteling cube life, the lax in building housekeeping, and sharing a toilet with hundreds of strangers every day is disgusting. Not to mention the 2-hour commute to sit next to that guy who swears he could kill everyone in there one day.

It is just a power struggle and mostly ppl who are older who prefer work in office over remote. It’s the same as using paper. I am flabbergasted anytime I go into a company that still saves things on paper or still needs to use a printer. Who even prints things nowadays? And it’s usually the older execs who print an power point or excel table and like dude, just use a tablet if the laptop is too heavy to carry around, that’s what it is for. If you need to make notes, there’s a section to do that too on the tablet or note section. But I think my analogy of using paper for anything at work is the same as going to office. Some ppl fall into old habits and cannot follow technology or new ways of thinking.

@@tomrivasThat’s not even close to true. It’s so management can feel like they have control over their employees and track what they’re doing 24x7. They want it to be a glorified guard/prisoner relationship. Checking on you regularly in your “cube” whether you’re creating results or not. I timed myself when it comes to going into the office. I get on the express bus from my park and ride at 8:00am just to catch the 8:15am bus, get to the office at 8:45am (45 min lost in the morning). Then I catch the 4:15pm bus (signed off 20 min early) so I won’t miss my bus since next one comes in an hour. Got home 4:45pm, that’s another 55 min in commute. So almost two hours lost when I could be attending to my loans!

Returning to the office is causing more carbon emissions and pollution. It's a waste of both time and energy. People should not have to return to the office as usual. I thought work from home and conservation was a big step forward.

@zenlife6848 Год назад
Exactly. After 2 years and a half of remote work and great productivity my manager decided we should go back to the office. This implies 3 hours time spend in total on the road to get to the office and to come back , a lot of money spent on the transport , noise in the office where it was my first day there and my least productive day as I was not able to concentrate and time lost cause the internet was not functioning all the time , got home late and exhausted and all I accomplished today was to do nothing well and to be pissed and tired. All this so that we can be micromanaged and get only half hour break in a total of more than 9 hours spent there without the possibility of an extra break. I find this to be completely bullshit and if before I loved my job and having great results , now I am already planning when to be my quit day. Other colleagues either quit already or they are planning to do it .
@SensejWorld

Add those 3 hours to hours worked and ask for corresponding raise. If they say no just explain to them that those 3 hours cost you money and tell them based on this how low salary fully remote work would need to offer to actually match their offer. Maybe then they will realize. If you work 8 hours a day and 3 hours is driving to work its like getting 37% pay cut. When you add to this a cost of a car, insurance for distance driven, fuel etc. It might be even 50% pay cut. @@zenlife6848

Working from home saves most folks hours in their day from having to commute. Not only this, but the savings in wear-n-tear, gasoline expenses, and opportunity costs are a huge reason why we shouldnt return to the old 40 hour work week (ie 60 hour work week with time commuting) . We have a real opportunity here to better our lives and our work-life balance that companies claim they are so concerned about. And we have a great opportunity to fix some of the causes of climate change by drastically reducing the fuel consumption of having so many folks drive to/from work everyday! The corporate real estate lobby and proponents of the 20th Century economic model would have us believe that working from the office is better - is best. I call BS. There is yet another angle to this that should be considered: Businesses could save tons of money by reducing their rent and PPE expenses if they embraced the work from home model instead. There will be growing pains, but it will be a better world if we can make this adjustment to our work lives. Cities cannot / should not continue to grow like they have in the past; we need more green space, fewer people on the roads, more time for life, and better air quality/water quality. All this will be a result of us adjusting to working from home more often.

Imagine New York with better quality air and less traffic for those who need to work at their location such as doctors, teachers and medical professional. Not to mention if there's a fire or medical emergency, less traffic for them to get where they need to be, I say remote work should be definitely considered, or at least given an option for those who jobs can be worked from home, believe it or not some people like working in office, but I definitely think people should get a choice of completely remote, hybrid or work completely in office, hybrid workers could choose how many days they want to be in office and what days they want to be there or the company can choose, and if they don't want to pay for equipment, let that be a stipulation to work from home you will have to pay for your own equipment ...eliminating the commute and child care cost alone would help workers pay for their equipment. If companies don't trust information at the house, random checks could be made

And then there's the oil companies. On April 20, 2020, the price of oil closed at $-37/barrel -- it went to zero and kept going! (Yes, that was when it really happened. Look it up.) Everyone who could work from home was, and the result was a catastrophic drop in demand for gas. They want people to commute and, therefore, buy more gas. So they've also got a stake in getting people back to the office.

If an employee can work in office means also, company or organization can able to see a huge benefit.when we take the benefits of organization, work from home or work from office is not at all a matter. It is based on the hours the employees can able to work. Well, of courses there's an economic impact on small businesses around offices which I think gets overlooked. I suspect the recession is gonna kill most hybrid and remote working.

Only thing for an employee in work from office is to explore apart from the working domain or platform and can able to communicate with their team members very easily... They can plan some great outings, tours and more selfie memories. But, if they are only in home means, they can't able to explore anything, they can't able to taste new foods with the friends and they can't able to enhance the knowledge in various fields and they can't able to communicate with their team mates or friends or mentors with face to face. All are spoiling because of work from home.. Work from home is better for only short periods or pandemic problems like situations. Life long work from home is not better for all employees.

Remote work is only somewhat better for organizations... But, it is not that much best for employees to expand their contacts and explore more things. Only face to face interaction will create more friendly conversations and explore more... Remote work is not a permanent solution i think.... Organizations and employees must want to against the remote work policies means, it will be fine... 6 months work from home and 6 months work from office is somewhat a better things for senior persons or employees working in office.... If one want to explore apart from the domain which they work means, they need to go out. Coming out from home and working in office is best thing for all employees who needs to enhance the skills and knowledges in various fields

Work from office is much more better than work from home.. In work from office, we can explore more and more things, we can learn or to gain knowledge apart from the subject or department where we are working.. Work from office has lot of benefits than work from home.. But, most of the employees refusing to work in office. Because, they want work from home. Work from home is only used to make employees to work in a comfort zone.. That's all. It has not any benefit. If an employee come to office and work means,they can able to built lots and lots of new conversations with their fellow employees to gain knowledge. In work from home, we can talk in teams with some of our team members. It is not that much useful to explore and gain knowledge to learn. What people aren’t understanding is that if the remote work continues ultimately your job is at risk cause now you arent only competing with your local market but with the whole world; meaning, your salary will sooner or later be brought into question cause why pay a person in DC or NYC when the company can hire some guy for half in Alabama, or for a tenth hire someone in Mexico or Argentina? Its fine for this guy whose business model thrives of that, but in time it spells further outsourcing in many fields. Its a very dangerous play for Americans, especially for those that live in metropolitan cities. Companies and economies made it work in the pandemic cause there wasnt an option at the time, but now it behooves one to consider how continuing the fully remote model ultimately hinders their own field and careers. Not to mention the countless industries that also suffer like: local restaurants, public transportation, local real estate markets… the list goes on and on. It ultimately not only hinders your local economy but you as well when there are less services and your local labor markets take a huge hit; ultimately you pay for those by way of unemployment and subsidies. Again, its not an issue that is so black n white, but should be discussed from all angles acknowledging the pros and cons. I dislike having to go back to the office, but understand that its better in the long run for my field (architecture) for all the reasons I’ve outlined. Its not a comfortable thing to return to with the commute but it’s necessary if you dont want to have half of your team in the future from another country when you can give that job to an American citizen. Sounds silly, but its crucial.
