Seeing Hank sneeze three times in a row is so validating to me, a person who sneezes three times in a row and has been worried about sneezing not being normal
WHAT THE WHAT??? i am over 100 years old and still making youtub videos? oh yeah baby. why? because i am the ultimate youtuber. woo woo woo you know it dear an
Did anyone else take like a whole minute to realize that John meant "multi-star species" as in interstellar travel and not that he thought humanity rated 1/5 stars and hoped we could do better? (fwiw I was additionally confused bc I highly doubt John would give all of humanity 1 star)
@@amybethwalks hi there. I do this a lot too when I miss context 😅 just want to say I see you, and I get you. It doesn't mean I believe everyone's take is the truth, it just gives me somewhere to start! (Fwiw I was kinda lost at first, too!)
That, "......NO SHIT." that John dropped is honestly the most emphasized thing I've heard him say in all my time here. And I'm from the Accio Deathly Hallows subscriber wave of 2007.
@@TheRetroFanatic IMO, Hank's optimism and John's pessimism are often very far from "realistic." They balance each other out enough to nake up for the extremes, I think.😆
When Hank said "that's not 50%" and John replied "NO SHIT", I initially misunderstood that Hank was saying his estimate was 50% and was like, "Yes, Hank, 1 in a quadrillion is not 50% by any stretch of mathematics" 😂
Fun fact for Hank: There is such a thing as audio (book) versions of fanfics - they're called podfics! They're usually readings of already existing fanfics, but some are made specifically just for the audio format
Also depending on the browser you use, you could use and add on screen reader to read the fanfic out loud - obviously not the same sound quality as an audiobook or podcast but maybe better than nothing
@@sexyscientist usually you can use a screen reader or depending on how popular the fic is there’ll be a link somewhere in the notes or summary or something that says “podfic”
The face Hank makes when he's pointing at John to answer "What counts as a person?" is like, the distilled essence of causing problems on purpose for your sibling. 5/5
"...That was a Hank Green joke not a John Green joke" "...how did this become an insult to me, that was a bad joke and now it's on me" My favorite line of these outtakes xD
Got so excited to tell them this since my whole niche in fandom is recording podfics that I forgot to check that the comment already existed. Haven’t recorded any green brothers book fanfic tho.
@@asimplestrawberry some of my favourite and very popular fics dont have podfics and i cannot in good conscience recommend them to my fellow adhd friends! i’m thinking about recording them myself but i have a bit of an accent sooo
@@alusiabednarczyk please consider recording! Remember that everyone has an accent and it is rarely the same as the characters they are reading for in podfic. Think of it like reading to a friend, not making a professional audiobook.
Dude John killed it with the audiobook narration of The Anthropocene Reviewed. Also watching you two just being brothers together is always delightful.
As soon as I finished the reunion video I started looking for the outtakes! And John’s ”… did you heard about the one with the moth?” killed me and made me realize I knew it by heart!
@@TotallyGlar No worries! John made a video about his two favorite jokes (and I believed he has told it once on Dear Hank and John but couldn’t tell you which episode) Highly recommend the moth joke!
Legit thought he meant multi-star as in the Anthropocene Reviewed rating-style, and I was like, DAMN I didn't realize John's take on humanity was so bleak. Less than 1/quadrillion chance of us getting to a more than 1 star rating?? lmaooooooo I was so confused for like 48 full seconds
When John says “even at half the speed limit” other stars are “very far away”, I think one thing he’s forgetting to account for is time dilation. While 0.5c would only result in a 15% increase in perceived time, 0.995c would dilate time by 10x. So even if the planet is 100 light years away, only 10.05 years would pass for the ship’s occupants. And even that is irrelevant because Proxima Centauri b-a possibly habitable exoplanet-is """only""" 4.2 ly away, so even at 0.1c the trip is still doable in a human’s lifetime.
I'm glad you ran the math. Because time dilation when speed becomes measurable on a scale of "c" becomes a factor which John just overlooks. What would the perceived time be traveling at 0.1c for 4.2 ly? its less than 42 years but like.. how far?
You have to accelerate to 0.5c and (istm that this part is often overlooked) unless you want to sail straight past you also have to decelerate from 0.5c. I do think this complicates matters.
you know, as a teen, whenever i see videos of you together all i think is that i rarely see other adults this happy, and how teenage-y and wonderful your happiness together is, how i relate to it. then i think it's a bit sad i rarely see adults having this type of energy. i hope to keep having this energy with other people in my adulthood, especially with my amazing sister. anyways, my stream of consciousness got really long there.
"What do you think our chances are of becoming a multi-star species?" I just finished The Anthropocene Reviewed audiobook and spent TOO LONG convinced Hank and John were too pessimistic about humanity getting a 2+ star rating by the time we're extinct.
Ya know, with the correct accessibility features turned on, you can have all of your own books fanfic read aloud to you!😂 (Or it can read anything else, for that matter) Hope you guys are enjoying your family time together and say Happy Birthday to your mom for all of us!
Yes! I turned on screen read when I was trying to get through a book that was assigned for a class and I was truly falling asleep reading it and it wasn’t available in audiobook. I bought it on kindle and had my phone read it to me (at a slightly faster speed so it wouldn’t be as boring). I did actually get through that book, but I would not have if it wasn’t being read to me
2:34 John you're looking for podfics. They exist, though relatively rare. 4:37 is an excellent display of what it's like to be the younger sibling. "You made a bad joke and now it's on me" lmao
coming here after the mention of The Anthropocene Reviewed, and thought "the chance of becoming a multi-star species" was an existential commentary on the odds of humanity ever reaching more than one on the five-star scale 😅
fun fact: audiobooks of fanfictions exist, and they're called podfics! A lot of the most famous fanfics get their own podfics, sometimes multiple, because as a community we're trying to make fics as accessible as possible, hence making an audio version. So if the fic has, let's say, around 300 kudos or more on AO3, there's a good chance it has a podfic! They're linked in the beginning notes usually
I commented on the original video how these videos are never enough and then, one minute later, I noticed this video. Thank you Hank and John, I appreciate you both so much.
At half the speed it's not twice as far, it takes twice as long. If it was twice as far at half the speed it would take four times as long. (No, The high school science teacher in me couldn't let that go)
Normal person: Watches this video Me: One side of the soccer scarf is wider than the other side, so I'm going to try paying attention to the video AND think about that the entire time.
Honestly you two are so so so motivating. Two people making the world a better place through your shared efforts to educate, I imagine your lives of full and if I can accomplish a fraction of the greatness you both continue to do I will have had a life worth living. I love what you both do, so much.
The moth joke is as follows (more or less): A moth walks into a podiatrist's office. The doctor says "Hi, what brought you in today, what seems to be the problem?" The moth answers, "Geez, if only there was /one/ problem. My family's going through a rough patch, I've had these aches in my wings, and I keep turning around and around wondering where I'm supposed to be headed and what it even means to 'supposed to be' anything." The doctor says, "I'm very sorry to hear that, but that's not really my expertise-- I'm a podiatrist, I study feet. What brought you into /my/ office today?" And the moth says, "Oh, the light was on."
Hank: I’ve written some fanfiction of my books. John: Oh yeah! It is sincerely my one wish to publish a book so that I can post all the deleted scenes/alt scenes as fan fiction and hopefully people will say “wow this is so good, sounds just like the characters” and I will say “why thank you 😈”
FYI - if you’d like something read to you and you’re using an Apple computer, there is a screen reader function in the accessibility features of your device that can read any digital document to you.
Just wanted to say to Hank love your videos! You are so smart, curious, brilliant and funny!! So naturally I want you to run for President! Hank for President!!!!!
Everything about that first conversation makes me want to double down and make sure you guys play Outer Wilds by Mobius Digital. It's the best exploration of human curiosity I've ever experienced and it would be a joy for both of you spacetime enthusiasts. Also it's set to some folksy space music, I love it and Hank probably would too! Anyways hope you play this game one day, preferably together, it'll be my dream come true just knowing you got to experience it (=
John making a bad joke and blaming it on Hank is extreme older sibling stuff. Source: I am a middle child and so I have been both the John and the Hank in this interaction many, many times.
