We honestly love how Kroager and Tad look, they look like long lost DKC characters and they just look great. We can't wait to see how the game goes, and we do hope stuff starts working out for you financial, so the work won't be too hard.
I personally hope that one of the bosses or even the animal buddy type characters is a giant anteater. The former cause they're pretty dangerous animal irl. And the latter cause they're just neat.
I like the designs for Kroager and Tad. But as a little constructive criticism, I think making Tad a different color like orange or something would offer better contrast between the duo, because as is they look like they could be solo protagonists of their own game.
I was gonna say Tad with a dark grey/black body w/ yellow pants sounds really nice but then I realized it would've looked like he stole Banjo's pants lmao
9:37 honestly i love seeing those renders from the 90s, especially since renders for CG movies and Game boxart did lead up to DKC, Toy Story and Super Mario 64, especially since they all shared the same SGI Framework and alias software rendering on those computers back in the day, you really nailed it :)
My biggest enjoyment from the Here's Mr Krabs channel as an adult is that you guys always sound like you're dead inside, even breaking character at moments where games have too much predatory monetization or when current trends eventually tire you out. Was definitely fun to put in the background of Vampire Survivors lol.
Be it making memes, making a video game, or merely talking about the ingredients off a box of breakfast cereral; many of us still love and enjoy your content Al. And there's two resons for that: Your passion and personality. YOU make it fun to watch. From the time you gave your list of characters for DLC in Smash, the time you reviewed the two Donkey Kong Games, that AMAZING Return to Krocodile Isle video you worked on with the amazing team, and of course the shitposts. You make it so enjoyable that like many of us here, I'm excited to see whenever you pop up in my notifcations, ready to talk about something you awnted to talk about or do a thing you want to do. It's all great and we all appreciate what you've done. As for Here's Mr. Krabs? Definitely gonna have to check that out. As for the characters for your game., tho. . . Whoa, man. Do They look GREAT! Kroager and Tad look like characters from the classic days of platforming, and it's a Red-Eyed Treefrog with a tadpole (who's 43!)? That is absolutely beautiful. Wouldn't change a thing about them. Just note. And this time I'm talking to the person reading this... if Al should stick to the design of Kroager and the game comes out at some point, then at that 'some point' someone, somewhere has to compile clips from the game to the 'Red Eyed Tree Frog Man' song from the Emperor's New School. Just saying, the meme is right there!
Uncle Al i want you to know i have always appreciate your content ranging from donkey kong abridged to your memes posts i really do hope that this game that you are making is going to be GOTY sometime in the future. In other words take all the time you need to make Kroager's Quest an amazing reality! We believe in you!!
No way! I’ve been excited for this man! Can’t wait to see what you got Edit: No way! I’ve been excited for this man! Can’t wait to see what you got Edit: Dude it’s all okay, I had no idea you made another channel but congrats on those subs in a matter of M O N T H S. Keep it up and you can never fail with Tales from the Bottom and anything with your VA Talent. also I’m excited for the game! The model for your characters look fantastic dude!!
I really love this old aesthetic you're going for in your game. The character designs look really fun and appealing. I would love an actual plushie of Tad, he's very friend shaped ☺️💕
Oh my god, my best friend Emma is gonna love Kroager's design so much! She loves red-eyed tree frogs, and I love the Rare aesthetic the promo art has! It's super reminiscent of that late SNES to N64 era look that so many renders of that era had I love it! Can't wait to see more of it in future!
Honestly Kroager and Tad look absolutely wonderful. Beautifully expressive already, and OOZING with 90’s Rare Energy But yeah I did prefer hearing about your life. Godspeed you magnificent bastard
Kroager and Tad's design really surprised me, in a good way! They look amazing and I can see that you guys are working very hard. Please take your time on this, because im sure it will be worth it. Thanks for reading, and have a great day.
You and the team nailed that early 90's CG look SO UNBELIEVABLY WELL. The skin textures, the big eyes, everything is so spot on! I can't wait to see more of this in the future
Kroager and Tad are super cute, I love their designs!! I especially really love that Tad is middle aged LOL, both of them are really lovable If you're looking for suggestions for improvements to their designs at all, there are a few character design details I can think that might help: Something that jumped (ha) out at me right away is their color palette. By themselves they're great, but when paired together side-by-side I think its a bit of an overabundance of green. Their bodies blend together a bit and dont stick out as much as they perhaps could. Kroager works as-is, hes a frog, it makes sense. Although maybe his feet could have the same bright orange as his hands so that color is used in more than one area of his body and also would break up his green a bit too, but even if not he's totally fine :) Tad is the one I want to call more attention to. His design is super perfect, but as a tadpole, I feel like his color scheme could be something that works even better with Kroager. Blue and green tend to work well together; you could try to go for the sort of blue-ish purple found on real life Red Eye Tree frogs for Tad's whole body, so paired next to Kroager you get the full tree frog color scheme! Or, perhaps, you go with a more greenish blue if you want to keep them both in the green area, that would look very pretty! Basically experiment with his colors a bit I think, you might end up with something that looks really pleasing to the eye. ^^ ALTERNATIVELY you could go for an even further matching color pallete with them where they use the same exact colors such as Donkey kong and Diddy kong, but I don't think they have something like the "bright red and yellow tie/hat/shirt" what would warrant that as much Which then leads into my only other thing I have to say; what if they did have some sort of stand-out, matching accessory that's iconic? What makes DK's tie iconic and easy to remember is that it has a bright color palette that stands out but works with his own colors, and it has good iconography. The big DK letters are easy to turn into a "symbol" or "icon." Same with Diddy's star shirt! Or if you want to go even further; Mario and Luigi's hats, Sonic's big uniquely shaped eyes, Yoshi's eggs, etc. etc. I think you have a good starting point to create some equivalent like that with Kroager's necklace but it's not quite there yet. I like the shape of it in the concept art, I think thats going somewhere! The roundness of the necklace also reminds me of frog eggs a bit, so that could be cool inspiration perhaps. Anyways those are just a random passerby's thoughts.. hehe, even if they aren't changed at all from now until the game comes out I think they're super cute and memorable and fun, I love them a lot!! (No offense Kroager but im totally playing favorites with Tad hehe) I wish you lots of luck with this project and I'll totally be following it!
The Kroager and Tad designs are v smart to be honest, that era of CG did it's best work with slimy or shiny things and frogs are perfect for that. Also my condolences on the Roblox channel, it be like that, retail, office work, whatever puts bread on the table
loving the designs of your characters! if they travel in a duo, then tad looks like someone you'd be able to toss around like a ball to attack enemies before bouncing back; they remind me of 90s platformer mascots!
Yo, the character designs look awesome, I love the 3d nintendo power render look to the characters. My only suggestion would be to make toad's body color something that could contrast well with green. Tad pols are usually brown, but it could be anything really. It might benefit to not have the characters looking slightly homogonized with color schemes that are too similar to one another. Still promising stuff
I agree, those renders of Kroager and Tad really do capture that mid-90's Rare aesthetic (also a little bit of Veggietales, which I consider a good thing). I'm very curious to see what Tad will bring to the table in terms of gameplay, since he doesn't have hands/wings/etc. (though I imagine his tail will be used for a variety of things like Dixie's hair?).
Love hearing from you again al your an inspiration to me and I can't wait to see how your game comes out because it looks fabulous I really love tads design he looks like he passed the vibe check.
This is looking great, Al! Kroager and Tad both look like they were plucked straight out of Rare's HQ in the 90s. In terms of game engines, I've heard that there are plug-ins or ones getting made to port Unity projects into Godot, so that could be viable. With Godot being libre and open source, they can't pull the kind of crap Unity tried doing.
I love the dynamic at play here between Kroager and Tad! I’m getting the vibe that one is carefree and laid back, and the other is more business oriented and easily irritated. I’m excited to see more from these two!
Kroager and Tad's designs definitely have a mid-late 90s videogame charm to'em Thinkin of Rayman and Croc specifically, but not in a bad way! Honestly wishing you and your team a ton of luck with everything, and hope you do start to get more subs
The tender and shading Kroager and Tad are peak Silicon Valley CGI aesthetic. Your modeling work on Kroager is especially good, the poses really emphasis his stretchy and lanky demeanor in a really pleasing way. Also keeping more animalistic elements is a very bold choice that I really admire. I think you were right to play this card because I’m more interested than ever to see what else you have in your hand!
i love how Kroager's quest protags look, as ya mentioned it reminds me of Rare's lookin characters, but Tad being 43 years old and not a frog makes it funny.
The quality of Kroger and Tad look amazing. They look like they were from donkey Kong. I like both characters so far and can't wait to see what their adventures will be like!
Oh man I don't want to build up expectations faster than you can deliver on them, but the idea of a Collectathon style 3d platformer sounds awesome. Maybe even 2 player co-op is in the cards?!
These are very solid designs for goofy protags. The use or greens and reds balance each other put amazingly. I can really see them having a lot if wit.
Good stuff! It's still early I know, but I already love the dynamic between Kraoger and Tad (Tad being 43 cracked me up too). I also get an early PS1 vibe from the renders, like a glossier Crash Bandicoot-like style. Sounds promising, and I wish you and your team all the best!
I'm surprised no one has made the connection of the main characters, Tad and Kroager, sounding awfully similar to Chad Kroeger, the lead singer of Nickelback.
Nice to hear that you're doing good in general and with the RU-vid stuff (welcome to the premiere pro club). With how your game is looking so far, I love Korager's design with the color choices. Can't wait to see more from you and your team in the future. Same goes for your channel's content!
I had idea of what you've been going through to work on this game an even life. I'm sorry you've had to go through this. I had idea about a Roblox channel you had. Tad and Kroager look awesome! I love the way you rendered them, and their designs are peak. They look like their designs could impact gameplay too, with Kroager being the lankey and agile one, and Tad being the one who roll around breaking stuff. Really cool.
The designs are absolutely packed with charm! I'm always a sucker for the 90s/2000s cartoony style, feels like lost mascots of that era. Very excited to see what comes next!
So far it's looking good! The character design is amazing and I love the little back-story between Kroager and Tad (especially the age for Tad LMAO) I am very excited to see some more updates on the game in the future and to hopefully play it one day! And hey, I don't know if this is alright to say, but if you still need a background designer I'm totally up for it! Or even just making unofficial art just to give ideas n' such to the table I can do that too! :)
Hey Al! Just wanted to say I respect the hustle! I hope the Krabs channel takes off and helps with the funds you’ll need for your game! Be safe and don’t forget to stretch in between videos. Also Kroger’s quest looks awesome! Definitely gonna look out for updates.
Just hearing about his for the first time and the artstyle really does fit that of old rare games so good job on modelling. I can't wait to see what's next in development.
Ngl, when I first heard about the "heres Mr.Krabs" YT channel all I could think was "oh boy looks like ALs finally decided to sell out", but honestly hearing the entire story has really made me rethink the way I see content on youtube. I think its really easy to just assume that those who are playing the algorithm dont actually care about what they're making and just do it with dollar signs in their eyes, but I've realized that way of thinking really does disregard the fact that youtube IS a JOB. Behind every single clickbait thumbnail, every "skibidi toilet in minecraft", every "Hacker v.s. Noob Fornite clip", theres people with bills to pay and mouths to feed. At a certain point I do think its fair to expect a little bit more out of creators on this platform (For gods sake SSSniperWolf could probably stop making content for an entire decade and still be living high) but for the majority of people on this platform, making videos is their only form of income. If they choose to play the system and adhere to the algorithm in order to survive then who can really blame them? This video has genuinely been really eye opening and has really helped me recognize just how judgemental I've been towards youtube content. Also those renders look literally perfect, nailed that 90s look to a tee which is really impressive since you're still fairly new to 3D modeling
For what it’s worth, Godot is indeed a good engine if you just want to distance yourself from Unity. I’ve been using it since the start of year for reasons separate from the runtime shenanigans recently, and I’ve personally found it easier to learn generally since it’s a lot less built up than Unity and has a lot less bloated, outdated stuff that makes it a pain to pick up and work with. Plus it’s open source so there’s no chance of any rug pulling. Characters look great, I would trust Tad with my life.
It's so exciting to see what you're cooking up. I always wanted to do a Rareware-like game, I'm glad SOMEONE will finally do it in the SGI 90s CG style! I don't mind the content gap either. I actually think the Squidward/Mr. Krabs vids, especially the mini golf one and the submarine one were hilarious. I'll keep on the lookout for those. Looking forward to see what you will do. Always have loved your content. You're gonna do great, man.
Kroager and Tad look great man, even as early designs you've nailed that 90's platformer icon look. Im absolutely looking forward to what the future has in store. I'll also spread the word of the Krabs channel to try and pick up some steam on that too.
This looks really promising please take all the time you need. I really like old style textures and models. Something about these two infront of a dark background gives me dark rainforest vibes. Love the green red and black color scheme
gotta say. i've seen the thumbnails that say you've been making a game. i always figured it'd be monke-based since donkey kong country and how i feel you want to create a spiritual successor to it. but kroager and tad are a pleasant surprise! really like the classic nintendo-rare renders you've got going. and taking inspiration from banjo kazooie seems like a good place to look to aswell. looking forward to what else your team has to offer and hoping the best in your future endeavors
I look forward to some frog mania coming in the distant future. DKC is among one of my favorite SNES games and hearing from the looks of it, I say that it's going to be a blast. Especially since I'm also planning to make an SNES inspired game myself after I get done with college. I look forward to hearing from you really soon, uncle.
I’ve been looking to make my own game too someday. It’s just currently concept art, and only a few friends know about it, but I’m glad to know you’re also following a dream of yours!
Man, I must say, I love the designs of Kroager and Tad. I can't wait to see more in the future! Once you and your team decide on avoiding Unity and picking the next best option for a game engine. Regardless, best of luck!
New fan here. I found your video discussing the MarioVsDK around last Direct. As a fellow lifelong DK fan, I'm excited to see more info on your new project as well as content from your channel. Keep it real Donkey Dude!
I love the characters, they look super cool! They definitely feel like they can get some good gameplay mechanics out of them, in the way you can tell that banjo and kazooie have a lot up their sleeve! Oh and they definitely nail the 64 platformer duo look! Very promising!
I think Kroager and Tad would work well as a Brothers/Best Buds sort of duo. Like they could either be siblings or best buds depending on which you feel works better.
The fact you and you team made the model look like its from the 90s is awesome!! Im so hype of the future game that's coming out whenever! Just don't rush things and keep your health in mind first then anything else. If you don't mind me asking, it what blender you used for the models right?
Kroager's Quest looks interesting, the models have a nice PS1/N64-era box-art quality to them - the difference in body type suggests some asymmetric component or different things each can do (might also be interesting for multiplayer modes); looking forward to seeing this through in the (hopefully) not-so-distant future! Keep Up The Good Work, Al! (:
Kroager and Tad look sick, I love them! You really did nail the aesthetic with their texturing, but more importantly I really like the way they stick together in the dash of concept art you showed here. I really wanna see them move! Anyways, it's a big shame to hear you're selling your soul to Roblox videos, but on the other hand I do not blame you and I probably would do the same if I had plans larger than myself as well. Wherever life takes you, I wish you the best of luck and I hope some year we can play your game and think "this one's real good :)"
I really dig the old 90's CG model aesthetic, so I'm hyped as hell to see that visual style in a modern game project (that isn't FNAF-related). Can't wait to see what comes out of your game project!
