How did you completely miss the sponsored plug at 15:09? They do advertise for some sponsors. They just do it in a way that's more tasteful than a lot of other channels.
@britboimike

@@SagebrushRambles haha yes, obviously there is a sponsor but what I mean is these channels that have 4 plus breaks to insert ads, then the sponsor ads (multiple) then pushing product all thru the video and very little content on the actual purpose of the channel. Perkins_brother_builders a typical example I had to unsubscribe from. Was good and education then just pushing tools, merch, personal products, partner products and more.

* 1848, 1878: those dates match with age of the oldest cement tiles in the kitchen. On the other hand : back than, people repurposed materials very easily. It can as well come from another barn somewhere else * The carvings in the beams are both the makers marks and indications about which beam is to be placed where. * Better remove all the grains from the storage in those metal plates: on very hot days, this can start to smolder and cause a fire. Idem for the straw. Also the places where water can drip on straw or on the grains : when this starts to ferment, it can create heat, and start smoldering even more easily when it's hot in summer. * On the picture of the horse with a cart, you can see exactly the wood beam+ chains Illia just found in the barn. It was positioned dangling in between the horse and the cart, and it connected both, in case of low weight carts, or when you needed more agility for manoeuvering eg with a plough. For bigger carts with heavy loads, they used fixed wooden beams left and right of the horse. * On 25'37" : the sidewalls of this barn are in asbestos material : please be extremely careful when working around this, don't even remove eg the straw on the beams against those plates with a brush or a leaf blower without wearing asbestos-safe masks and clothes.

What a wonderful space. You can always use the "spent" wheat and the old straw for your garden area. It is a good source of carbon and once it's exposed to the elements, it should break down nicely if not layered too thickly. Take care guys.

Dear you two. I followed you from day one with your very first video. That historical barn is something to be saved and preserved. My ancestor came to Nouvelle France as a sailor in 1720, coasting in Québec, never to go back to his homeland, la Bretagne. Many Belgian immigrants came to our shores during centuries. These old buildings mean a lot to me and my nation. Thank you for your hard work preserving History. 😊😍 Marc René, Varennes PS 2022 will mark the 350th anniversary of our city. Cheers !

Old Pennsylvania (USA) Dutch saying: The barn (large size) will build the house, the house will not build the barn. That is why you have a big barn (with the out buildings) and have a house that has been made larger as the farm prospered. They did not have much land that is why they raised the pigs. Love your channel and admire your efforts, amazing!

Absolutely a gorgeous old barn. What, almost 300 years old? Preserve every bit of the carpentry that you can. I love the beam work, the mud wall, well the whole dang thing. It can never be replaced. I imagine the farmers that came together to build this barn, maybe the wives making the food for them. The writing on the beams is fantastic. A terrific video Marina and Iilia.

That is a really nice barn! My interpretation: the end walls were replaced to add visual link to the newly extended house ie aesthetics/status. But inside, my goodness, that was a master carpenter's proud work! Beautifully balanced and the joints are complex and all done to match the available timber. Usually all the timbers would be marked up after the joints were made so that when erecting, the right mortice would find the right tenon etc. The good calligraphy probably indicates a carpenter with good education.

In the uk we call them type of walls "wattle and daub". We lived in France for 15yrs, the house we lived in, only had one storey until the early 1950's, then a second one was put on. the Barn had a upper level/floor made out of planks and poppy stems, where they kept the straw. we had 3ft of straw to move, it took months. But was so worth it. You could replace the old wattle and daub walls, with new daub then "tag" the beams as others have over the years, one way to leave your mark.
@Ragnar8504
@Ragnar8504 2 года назад
I immediately thought of that when I noticed that the far wall retains its original timber framing but the wattle and daub has been removed and the outside covered over with metal. Might be wise to keep the metal though if that's the most weatherbeaten side.

Plus back then they used horses to travel to town and to visit neighbors so the barn could have been where they kept carriage,farming stuff,horses and plow oxen. Grain next to it was probably to make it easier to feed them when weather was bad.

I live in Iowa in u.s. I'm 75 now but grew up on old farm like yours. The house had square nails in walls and wooden spikes to hold timbers together. No insulation in walls. In the US the settlers marked the logs in their log cabins with Roman numerals to indicate which logs went where. I have watched a lot of reclamation of old log cabins but do not recall seeing the initials of the people building the cabins and dates on the logs - they did sometimes carve the date in the log above the front door though.

Maybe it would be possible to preserve the wood-and-clay wall in resin? Build a casting form around it and then pour see-through resin down the inside part, and afterward build a load-bearing wall against the outside part to stand against the elements. As for protecting the beams against further dampness, maybe it’s possible to lift the beams a tiny bit, just enough to slide some kind of damp protection between the bricks and the wood. Love the glass wall idea ❤

I don't know what the farm was originally, but it appears that later it was a dairy farm (milk, cream, butter) and a pig farm (pork). So that barn could have been for the horse, and for animal food - hay, oats and wheat. That wooden piece with chains at 18:42 was for the horse, which is visible in the photograph at 19:59. The horse was used for pulling the plow (plough) and for taking the milk and pigs to market. The wife could have had a garden for family food. Thanks for the video. Jon (UBAH)

Hello friends I love your optimism and your courage with your farm you are very realistic about the time it takes to reach your goals. I know that you will probably have to achieve this goal yourself with a lot of work in the future. greetings from Denmark to you and the cat😄😄😄😄

I’m no expert but I have seen enough farms to know the chain devise is a horse harness for ploughing fields, it goes behind those giant Belgian horses, both of which the Amish people here in USA still use. Many videos on RU-vid. That grain storage is a first for me. Here in US ours are called silos and are usually round and a separate building. The indoor one seems so efficient to me. The rafters in our barn also remind me of the Amish style of barns that are raise here by hand, in the USA. The whole community gets involved. Most of them can trace their ancestry back to Flanders!
