Regardless of the project and potential (and real) frustrations, Illia always appears to attack each task with determination and fervor. I hope he is rewarded with well-timed Belgian beer breaks! Hahaha Cheers to All of you. Be well.
I once took a day off from work to repair a couple loose ceramic tiles in my bathroom shower. The more I poked at the tiles, the worse it got. By noon I called my wife to tell her I just hired a contractor to take the whole bathroom down to the studs! I truly admire your dedication to your project...and your workmanship. 👍👍
reline your chimney with a chimney sleeve. it will solve a lot of problems. we've owned a couple of homes with chimneys and this is the first thing we did. No problems and easy to clean
It seems as though every renovation project I have ever been aware of has turned out something like what you are experiencing...a bit of a fix up turns into a major re-do. I admire the courage of you both with the way you just keep on going. I’m sure there are times when even Illia is ready to throw in the towel. Glad that you are able to keep each other going.
Ilya, for a man who is not a mason by trade, you are doing very well. And your English is improving leaps and bounds from your very first episode. Bravo!
I have never seen people so determined to do things right, no matter the trouble or time. You don't cut corners and you know when you finished you did it the best. What great work!
I laughed when you kept putting the like and subscribe every time he bent over and then laughed more when the next advertisement that came up was Belt Bro. Illia this might be a hint that you need a Belt Bro or maybe they can sponsor the next video? 😏 😏 Love watching the transformation.... You guys should be proud of yourselves so far.
I love lying in bed on a cold and freezing winter night in New Zealand, watching people work really, really hard during extreme heat on Timelapse. So satisfying 😂
Have been astonished at the mount of crumbly brick and mortar you have encountered, and the amount of work you have put in to repair/renovate the areas that need it. At 79, can't do that sort of thing any longer, but sure admire the amount and quality of work you are doing. Going to be a place you will be proud of and comfortable in.
Illia, you made fun of all of the mistakes you made but look at what you learned from them! The brick work in this week’s video is wonderful and you’re so proud of it - if you hadn’t made those mistakes when you first started, you wouldn’t know how to do such a good job now. I love the “quick and dirty” tool you made - it was perfect for what you needed. And I’m very happy to see that the Catspector was doing her duty, checking that you and Marina are keeping up to her standards!
If you intend on reusing the chimneys I would highly recommend a liner. Due to the porosity of your brick work and lime you run a real risk of gasses leaking into your rooms
Are you going to tube line the chimneys. Free standing fires are better than insert fires, imho. plus my old one i was able to lift lid and cook on it. Baked potatoes in foil etc plus keep my ceramic coffee pot hot all evening. Hard but fun days, oh i miss them..
DIY I think you’ve adapted quite well to things not going exactly as planned and your going to have a beautiful home after to enjoy for many years to come!!!
Since you are moving from an abandoned farm to a living home. I hope someone will provide De Hoeve with guidance on electrical, plumbing etc, so they will get past the licensing requirements in Belgium. This is an awesome undertaking. Supporters please provide insight into this for them.
Codes and Rules vary from Countries or Regions/States/Provinces and City or Country life too...can't advise when your not from Belgium...Basics of Electricity are the same but Voltages and Phase type ( 1Phase / 3Phase ) also is different....being Safe is most important when rewiring a Home...same with plumbing / HVAC ...Construction..it all is unique or slightly similar.... Experience Matters here...
^^This!^^ Slide it down from the roof, connect it to the stove, and it will be so easy to clean. Also will keep creosote from building up and leeching through the brick and mortar potentially discoloring your walls down the line.
Such a beautiful Property. It will be quite a wonderful place to raise a Family. And the Best Part is the New/Old Tool (chisel) Elia made! It works Fabulously!!! Family Heirloom👍🏻🏠👍🏻🇨🇦
If there is a week where you need an idea for a video, you could do another tour of the farm and point out what has all been done. Maybe it is just me but I think it would be nice to see all the progress so far.
Illia is doing a wonderful job of replacing the bricks and fixing the cleanout area with the new metal door. It's another step in completing the renovation. Good work for both of you. Well done!
Boy did you open a can of worms! However you have to address the issue, with the brick crumbling in your hands I am glad you are addressing this fireplace. Find the correct firebox insert then run a stainless steel liner to the roof cap, this is the safest option for you and the family. Wish I lived closer I'd stop by and help you out. Best regards .
After 100+ years, the fireplace bricks definitely deteriorated You always just accept it, Illia, and get on with how to fix it. Very real how these problems surface on an old building like this. That’s what makes your channel so interesting.👍🏻🥰
I lost touch with your channel, but have thought of you often. Today I opened You Tube and there you were!!!! OMG ! You all are progressing so well. I look forward to watching more videos. Thanks for sharing your day with us.
Unfortunately, when renovating a heritage home, you always run into conflicts of building codes and standards of construction. The good news is you guys are doing a great job of finding the problems before it's too late. BRAVO ZULU from Halifax Nova Scotia Canada!!!
well i have come to the reality watching your posts over the years that you have become a MASTER MASON congratulations Don't let anyone tell you otherwise congratulations
You two are amazing. Every time a part of the renovation needs a lot more work than you anticipated, you take it in strides. How are the rest of your family? I hope they are doing well, and that this stupid war ends soon. I say a prayer every day for that. Give Anneke a couple pets, some catnip, and scratches from me, and God bless you all. I think you two deserve a nice dinner out.
Kathy and I have been through several building and rehab projects and things almost never go as planned. Still, in the end, it has always been worth the effort and it will be for you also. Just keep going and doing just as much as you can every day and one day it will be mostly over. I say mostly over because there will always be something more to do. If it gets in your "blood", you will find other big projects where your acquired skills can be put to good use. Thank you for sharing your adventure with us.
It always seems to be a little bit more work than you expected. It's an old house - it's normal and not too surprising, but things always take longer. You both persist and take things as they come! You have good positivity and you are making progress! Great job!
This is the true meaning of “dismanteling” the fireplace. Love how the tools kept getting larger and more powerful as the job went on. I was really rooting for Ilya to install a brick arch to replace the ones removed. But then, I don’t know what your ultimate goal is… a hearth or wood stove? Best wishes in the days ahead and I hope your families are safe and well.
When I saw the spark and heard the loud pop I thought well, we haven't gone so far into the future for wireless grinders! I did get a kick out of the "like and subscribe" each time Illia was hard at work. 🤣 Really looking forward to the day you have all the necessities in and can at least move in! It will help save so much money in the long run even if you have to be uncomfortable in less space for a little while until you finish renovating the other sections.💙💛🕊
In my area of the US the working chimney flue, in habitable homes, should be lined with Terra Cotta tile "tubes" or a stainless steel tube liner. Chimneys like yours did function for years. The down side was the buildup of acidic creosote resulting in chimney fires or flue gasses escaping into the home. Great job. Narragansett Bay
Thank you 😊 pretty easy - everything that blocks the next logical step is our next job/task. Chimneys were blocking installing insulation, so they were the next. Now it’s finally insulation time ☺️
The small inspection doors really look nice. But after all that preparation and small detail work, I'm really looking forward to the complete insulation of the walls, which will finally make a big difference of the rooms appearance! It will give a first rough impression of how it all will look when finished.
Illia and Mariana that was great never miss a video thank you for sharing and your time the house is fantastic and what you have done only more beautiful 😍.
Illia has so much patience and so many skills to do all the various jobs that this renovation requires. Great job! Watching all the progress amazes me. Thank you for all the videos.
Guys, I am a little concerned, half way through the video, watching you prep bricks to replace what you are removing, I would suggest that you find a brick rated for high temps, the reclaimed bricks are great for construction, not rated for fire boxes/fire places. Also, use metal lintels when rebuilding the openings.
Love your content and thank you for sharing the journey. Love the recycling of the brick and it's so satisfying to see all the effort pay off. Good to see the inspector as always.
Did you bring Anneka a present from your trip? The look at 2:17 seemed to say she was a little unhappy with you both 😉 The house is really starting to take shape now.
You can replace the wire on your Grinder...easy and cheap....they can break inside if older ( i have 40-50 year old tools i still use as well as Brand New too )...you can take it apart..replace the cord ( i buy bulk cord that is a better grade than factory...make it as Short or Long as i want..add new end to plug in and use it again for decades...
Fabulous. Having used pipe and stove heating in a wooden home, taking great care in the installation/repair is vital. Great job so far! I really love your wanting to get it right the first time! Super work ethics. 🏡 and amazing work always ♥️
You guys are awesome! Iliya makes everything look so easy. We have a similar project, and watching your channel for ideas and inspiration. Brilliant work, and brilliant explanations on all. Iliya is a powerhorse!
😂 Another brick in the wall ….. where have I heard that before, maybe Around ˋthe dark side of the moon’ possibly. Ilia you are doing a great job, love the vlogs. 👍🧌🇬🇧🍷🇫🇷
Oh, don't worry Illia, I think I can safely predict that there will be MORE old mortar removal in your future! Good thing you are developing custom tools that work better. Just like a true craftsman. )))) Big Thumbs up!
Well done, team Illya and Marrina and catspector! Love the new Walnut handle, too. Why is an inspection door necessary (apologies for ignorance)? Marina, loved your new French braid hairdo/style. Nice view of wheat harvest and combined straw rolls. Progress in multiple areas and multiple smiles. Bravo!!
God Bless you both in all your endeavours . What exceptional people you are . I can’t imagine taking on such a task and not becoming exhausted ad crushed by it . I have enormous admiration for you .
