This episode concentrates on the Vikings and their inventive craftsmanship, the expansive Carolingians' art of exquisite finesse and richness and the skillful hardworking ingenious Anglo-Saxons. Januszczak shows the Viking skill in making ships and their attacks on Christian centres such as Lindisfarne not only to loot but to defend their own Norse gods.
He visits the Jelling stones that commemorated the Danes' conversion to Christianity. Charles Martel and the Franks belief they were God's chosen people after the defeat of Muslim forces later led to Charlemagne being declared Holy Roman Emperor by the Pope and the creation of the largest empire since the Romans.
Januszczak considers Charlemagne's Palatine Chapel, Aachen, as a brutal and cold attempt to copy the Muslim Mosque of Cordoba. Anglo-Saxon art is represented by the Sutton Hoo hoard. Januszczak concludes that in the Dark Ages it was not the sword but the written word, whether in wood, stone, or what he considers the greatest masterpiece of all art, the Lindisfarne Gospels, that defined the age.
Perspective is RU-vid's home for the arts. Come here to get your fill of great music, theatre, art and much, much more!

Waldemar’s Perspective productions are like a combination of travelogue, sociology, psychology, geography, history, and art - all delivered in a style that is entertaining and accessible for the lay person. He gives the viewer the perspective of art history from both the forest and the trees, and as a result makes a strong case for his perspectives on art. It’s how every Art History 101 should be taught.

I find the writing on ancient gravestones deeply touching and proof of the universality of human emotion…some are very funny, some not all complimentary, and some full of such profound loving grief and the terrible ache of an empty place in the those who outlived the deceased.

"Words, letters, inscriptions, they keep appearing in this story, and wherever they appear, they seem to glow with Dark Age urgency." Glow with Dark Age urgency. Out of the darkness appears a glow. A light. A beauty. A wisdom. What an image! What a wordsmith. An artist of words. Waldemar Januszczak, your programme is a piece of art in itself. Thank you for enlightening us in such a delightful manner. This information just flows in without resistance like melted gold.

That book he's touching is very likely a faithful copy kept at the monastery for sentimental reasons, and not the real deal. The real deal is probably at the British Library, behind lock and key, where you have to handle it with white gloves.

Well, this was on tv first - it's a BBC production. All the complaining about the adds is annoying, though. I mean, adblock exists, anyway, and it's very flexible. Watching a couple of ads seems fair in return for good content, but if a youtube channel exploits the ad system and puts in too many (like this one), why should the audience bother watching ads from them at all?

Just as impressive as any Anglo-Saxon jewel--extremely intricate, exquisite, with the finest, tiniest details you will ever see in gold, silver and precious stones. T'ang Chinese jewelry was also made at roughly the same time as Anglo-Saxon jewelry, between 600 AD and 800 AD. You will be mighty impressed.

Vikings had heard tales of Charlemagne's abuse of prisoners and threats of beheading-or-conversion, as well as deportation of almost all of the Saxon males and taking of their females as their own. Monasteries were perceived as the spiritual centers of the above atrocities. Politically it was for their own protection to prevent their spreading. Read "The Franks" by Franz Los.
