During the week of August 25, 1835, the world was treated to a fantastic story of scientific discoveries by the famous British astronomer, Sir John Herschel. He had discovered life on the moon or so the readers of The New York Sun were told, in a series of articles now known as the Great Moon Hoax. This is the story of how one newspaper fooled the world.

We laugh at the people of that period for believing in such a hoax but I think people are just as easy to fool today. There a lot of TikTok’s and RU-vidrs spreading misinformation all the time. It’s a reminder to never trust one source. Look at it from all angles and seek information from sources not trying to drum up attention.

This story has me wondering about the media and communications systems like telecom and the internet. I am wondering how dangerous it is to have these now-critical systems managed by profit-driven companies. Media, telecom, and the internet are all about the gathering and exchange of information. Should the gathering and exchange of information be regulated by shareholders, or by citizens, or by no one at all?

I bet no Russian doubts they went to the moon! I'm not sure that Americans are a good landmark. After all, they thought The War of the Worlds was real instead of a book and radio play - some committing suicide because they thought earth was being invaded - something which still astonishes me 80 years later!

The moon represents the feminine. When the moon is in apogee, mercy and empathy prevail, at the expense of justice and strength. Reason and facts are sacrificed for the sake of harmony and peace. Victims become heros for being vulnerable. Nurture is promoted over dicipline. The indulgence of the age creates poverty and moral chaos, wich then requires a return to lives of sacrifice and toil. The cycle carries on.
