I really have no interest in early sailing ships...but I began watching your video and I could not stop. You, my friend, are a master modeler. The detail of your patient work is outstanding. I loved your video and your great work. My only nitpick is the string used for the sails is too large in diameter compared to the things around it like the railings and other human-use items. If it was measured against the other things it would be almost two inches in diameter.

Awesome piece and great build. It's a pity the stern didn't have more defined detail in it as it's actually in real life very striking and beautiful. Likewise for the Coat of arms at the bow. But love the build and good editing. Thanks for sharing.

This is really weird. I have this same exact kit (pieces are the same, same plastic color, same vacuum formed sails), except the box is from 1986. The dimensions stated in the box are the same (40cm long, 33cm height), but the scale says it's 1/146. What the hell Revell?

When you stated 1959 kit...were you referring to the molds? Not that it had been manufactured in 1959...which would mean those paints were 60 years old. Those paints didn't look that old....or they'd have been very caked. Just wondering. Great modeling BTW

Back in the mid 60's I put this ship model together. I was10yrs old. The plastic back then was black and I used tester paints and free handed all the painting with a small brush. It didn't come out looking as great as yours did but it looked good enough for a 10yr old boy. I had that ship for yrs but it dissapeared after I got out on my own. Nice job on ur ship! It reawakened some old memories from over 50 yrs ago. Thanks.

Oi, Alex! Wonderful and very inspirational work. I have this kit since 1973... I was just a child, starting at the hobby, and a friend of my father's helped me with painting and assembling the hull. I did the rigging the best way I could at the time. The kit's ratlines were of a flexible material, a lot more realistic than the hard plastic ones of the later editions, but very hard to install, specially for a 10 years old boy... The kit was proudly displayed for years in my family's living room, until the dust did a complete mess of all the rigging, and many cleaning accidents caused a little Trafalgar in the kit. Then one day I disassembled the masts, and put all the remains in a box. Lately I have looked at them, and concluded that the kit is still buildable, with a bit of scratch to redo the missing parts. It's a project for my retirement... A curious detail is that the painting, handmade using enamels, still looks very good. Abraço daqui de São Paulo!

Thanks for posting this Alex, I'm just about to embark on the same kit so it's very useful to get a preview of the challenges and rewards that lie ahead. I've already cast an eye over all of the flash, ejector pin marks and shrinkage holes. I hope I can make as good a job of it as you have and get the same satisfaction at the end of the build... having made many 'old classics' over the years I also accept that the same frustrations are inevitable. Great idea to pick out details with colored pencils, I'll definitely use that!

Not my kind of model, but it looks quite impressive man, my grandpa (rip) build in his adult age, all three caravels, niña, pinta and Santa Maria but of course, all in wood material, no plastic models those times, but my Grandma while cleaning the stand, hurt the Santa Maria, which after falling from the stand, all the masts broken, cords and rope messing up...my grandpa almost cryed and never been able to fix all the stuffs because he was already too old, I would try to restore the Santa Maria by myself but I think, based on my experience, that I might worsen things.. anyway great model here 👍

Incredible build man. I usually do 1/350 Modern Warships, but my sister (and sort of myself as well now) simply loves these old Ships of the line. It's a bit daunting, but I want to build some of these old ship kits for her to have, but I think I'll start on something more simple first (like the USS Constitution) before tackling the Amazing HMS Victory. But when I do, I'll be sure to use your video as a help guide all the way!!!!

As I was born and now live in Plymouth England I opted for the model of the Mayflower, I think about the same scale. I have never liked the plastic sails so either build them with any sails or material ones in the furled (or stowed) position. My favourite was a 1/72 Corvette from the original release by Matchbox. I replaced a lot of the railing etc with solid copper from house hold electrical wire (1 mm).

Revell was a pretty schlocky outfit, producing some real crap. But their sailing ships were state-of-the-art, representing a large investment in the molds (shudder). They must've been money makers or the sheer number of sailing ships would never have been produced. The quality and design stand up very well today even if the molds show their age. They maximized the marketing by falsely issuing various ships using one set of molds (Cutty Sark/ Thermopylae, Seeadler/Eagle, etc.). True, the new-school injected ratlines suck. Revell should also include the old-school ones like in their early issues as also found in Airfix kits.

Hi Alex, Thank you for posting this video. Your English is indeed only slightly accented, and perfectly understandable. It is not necessary to apologize for it. Your model is terrific. It is definitely a work of art. Your patience is amazing, and it has produced an amazing model. I think that even though this is a model from the 1950's the flash on it is more probably owed to the quality of its original molds. I believe the mold itself wore out over the many times a model was molded from it, rather than the age of the model itself. The plastic over time might have been become warped, but it would not necessarily have produced all the flash you had to cope with removing. The sink marks are another problem. I believe the plastic molding industry just did not have the technology we have now & that's why those sink marks were so large & so needed. Anyway you are to be greatly congratulated for the quality of your model and the video itself. Thank you. --Tom

Alex honey, have you seen that bed sheet I put over there earlier?? No babe........top quality video, love the innovation used with your sails. Surprised the kit didn’t come with better sails myself, for such a good kit. Loved the ropes too!

Where is that hobby store? It has a good selection of sailing ship model’s . As a kid i enjoyed the pyro series that were smaller in scale. The brig of war actually sailed well in the creek with a weight in it and only the foremast. Otherwise top heavy with both masts. I always wished that Scale models of French , British and American frigates ,sloop and brigs of war were made so as to see the actual difference in size. I guess they figured there was no market. How can you have a market with no product? Today there are video games but in the 60’s we had fun daming the creek and making island fortresses like in the pirate movies and Captain Horatio Hornblower.

Good build Alex, especially the rigging and sails. I built this kit in 1968 as a 12 year old, Airfix version I think, we didn't have airbrushes then so everything was hand painted. Didn't get the superb finish you did. Once again good build

Probably your wasn t better painted but Im sure it was happier days without social média stress nor these days demanding and ecayse of that... your Victory is indeed better than mine... it was built with a kid enthusiasm.... yours... thank you for your comment...

My wife got me this for Christmas, it's the worst kit I've seen, loads of flash, warped parts. Why are they still selling this junk? However, the wife is expecting a beautiful model ship so I'll have to give it a go and hope I can come near your standard.

I built that when I was 18, I agree it was a hard slog but so worth it at the end, I enjoyed myself as well, great build!

Love the video detail and commentary. I rock those same magnifying glasses. What lens did you use for this project mostly? I tend to use the middle one. Beautiful work!

Great to watch this - I live about 3 miles away from where the real thing now lies, and I haven't been to visit her in years! I should do that soon, I think.

And i found your video again... i built this model some years ago. It was a very good experience. Now i stuck for some month on the „Alexander von Humboldt“, and the Titanic in several scales are still packed up. ... my motivation at the moment is no longer the same as it was at the Victory... thanks for your memories...

the ships of the line spent most of there lives in, harbour the heavy lifting was done by the 2 deckers and frigates so their paint was immaculate can I suggest painters canvas for your sails with some acrylic paint I think you could achieve an excellent canvas effect ...

A lovely build of a beautiful ship, I went aboard her years ago, and she was breath taking. To think she was ,I think, thirty plus years old at the battle in 1805, and was in the water until the end of WW2. If you've never visited, I highly recommend you do, when you get chance. Thank you for posting.
