I'm Namibian and of Aawambo tribe. We use our fathers' surnames. When a child uses the mother's' surname, it is assumed the father denied the pregnancy. However, there are other tribes in our country where the child uses the mother's surname if the parents are not married. I think it is really just a preference thing otherwise there wouldn't be so many inconsistencies within the African tribes.
