I did the FrakenFOV mod, removed the face plate all together and put a replacement foam directly on the headset. FOV and sweet spot is much better.

Think you've summed it up perfectly. If they could increase the fov and the sweet spot this headset would be the best headset without question. Still it's a great headset. Very comfy too. The G2 faceplate is much more comfy than the original reverb. We are so close to perfect VR. If this headset evols to 140 fov with a better sweet spot, OLED panels for black levels and next gen rtx 4080, VR will be unstoppable.

Yes, it always feels a little like we're just 'on the cusp' of a truely fantastic VR system. I really like the G2, but there are definitely compromises, and one of the things I'm increasingly wanting is true edge-to-edge clarity in the lenses with no glare/god rays. This seems like a difficult thing to achieve unfortunately, but I'm confident in the evolution to get there eventually.

@@ImmersedRobot To be honest, the "glare" you can see from whites actually add to immersion. I mean, would you really not flinch at all when staring at bright lights directly? When I play games with these lights I really appreciate the glare as it gives more depth to the lights.

Seriously, Valve Index with better resolution screens. Then you can adjust the resolution scaling as needed to meet your specs.

@@ImmersedRobot Picked up a G2 (version 1) and it's pretty amazing. For $399 on sale it's by far the best headset for PC gaming, $599, not so much but still worth it if you just want to game using a PC. I have an Index too but mostly used my Quest 2 since it actually has a higher res than the Index. Paired with a 3080, the G2 is pretty much unbeatable at the moment. I also have a Quest 2 and Airplay is definitely a game changer but I haven't gone back to it for VR on Steam since getting this. Just wish they would add a cover for Lighthouse tracking and knuckles. FOV and sweet spot does matter but you don't really notice these limitation after a few minutes. Does make you move your head more basically. Do also note that the IPD adjuster doesn't go below 60 so if you're around 58-60, don't get this. My friend has this issue and the binocular vision doesn't line up at all which is the biggest drawback in my opinion. But in VR at this point, Resolution is king, therefor the G2 is the new king.

any opinions about Pimax?

Congrats. I love my G2. Its a Sim Headset, it don't play beat saber or any of the other hand tracking games that well, this was my opinion coming from a Rift CV1. I had to do a lot of tweaks to get it to run smoother. Just installed some Viper 4000mhz @ 3800 and a lot of timing tweaks and my headset is running smoother.

Thanks, mate. Hoping the FOV mod will arrive soon so I can see how that helps with the issues.

The sweet spot is kind of an issue, I wear glasses so can't do the face mod but once I got used to getting it centered properly, it's not really a problem. Takes a couple moves while FSDing to my next location in ED. Gotta say, I can't go back to the Index for anything that uses the HOTAS now. Wish Valve would support the Kunckles on the G2 or if HP would release something with active finger sensors on it.

As someone who wears glasses, the corners of my eyes dont even have lenses in normally, so i am used to moving my head more I guess. Think i was made for a g2 not to annoy me.

Thanks for providing a more realistic review of this headset Gary. I have been tempted to buy the G2 on a number of occasions (had one on pre-order last year). There were too many concerns i had for me to go through with it i.e. the controllers, small sweet spot, narrow FOV and what the customer support would be like if it went wrong. Having owned the Index (and sold it again after a year), i know that i want a high end HMD, i just don't see any on the market at the moment that excites me enough to splash the cash. Hopefully something really great will come out next year (one with fewer compromises) that will blow all of our minds and get the VR community pumped again. PSVR2 is one of those funnily enough but i also want a great PCVR HMD too. I wonder what the Quest Pro will be like? Will Decagear actually release a headset? Will Samsung step back in to the market? I think we need Nostradamus Jr to throw some bones onto the sand and give us another prediction!

I'm definitely hankering for a true 'no compromise' headset too, and from what I've tried so far, the Reverb G2 isn't quite there unfortunately. I've just been playing a bit of NMS to try the motion controllers out, and although the tracking isn't terrible, it's of course barely comparable to the Index from that point of view. The motion controller tracking is also worse than the Quest 2 (which, granted, is fantastic) and that's almost my minimum bar at this point. They're serviceable and certainly useable for the most part but not what I'd want from a 'no compromise' VR system. I'll keep testing the G2 however as there is still a lot to like about the headset! Fingers are continuously crossed for a Valve Index 2 with specs to match expectations!

FrankenfFOV mod is a must with the G2, increases the FOV more than the Q2 & the sweet spot becomes bigger

I had both the G2 and index, I went with the G2. I thought the sweet spot was about the same on both and I could see screen door effect in the index and since I have cockpit I just did not want to deal with the lightboxes. Don't get me wrong I liked the index but the slightly larger field of view was not worth the SDE to me and the lightboxes more so because I don't play room scale, only Elite, Project cars etc. Also I like that it's easy for me in WMR to bring up a desktop window and control video's or audio streams without taking the headset off and I can use the flashlight in WMR to see things on occasion when I need to. Both are excellent headsets. Odyssey... I have never experienced any issue with VR, zero and I have tried all the PiMax, Oculus Rift, Rift S (I still use an S for roomscale - no lightboxes!), Reverb 1, G2, Index, Samsung... but in Odyssey with the S and the G2 I get VR sickness real quick even on VR low especially in an SRV but worse, Odyssey in VR the planets look like garbage.

Interesting. It doesn't matter which hmd we have, there always seems to be a compromise. I think you may have to use the G2 exclusively for a fair while until your brain starts to adjust to the fov reductions being the norm. Great work and looking to your further testing👍.

Yes, I agree, although I do hope the FoV facial interface mod I've ordered will help with that too. I think generally, the small sweet spot is the bigger issue for me at the moment, but the mod might help with that too.

@@ImmersedRobot Yes , there is always a compromise, the day we will see an hmd with 120 FOV Horizontal / 100 Vertical; a great sweet spot, decent sound and good inside -out tracking is not being to arrive soon. Perhaps , the Decagear ? So make it yourself : G2 screens, Rift S lens, Index headphones and Q2 tracking with haptic force feedback gloves and WalkOVr device. And we are done ! ^^
@netshaman9918
@netshaman9918 3 года назад
@ziher123 Perhaps , but what graphics card do we need for this ? Especially when pixel density is high ? So there is another compromise. I say 130, but beyond , you a NASA PC for running games like NMS for example.
@talex001
@talex001 3 года назад
@ziher123 I had the PiMax 5k and 5k OLED and they were nice headsets but the SDE was around that of an Oculus S and the software could be unstable, I really, really wanted to love it but just couldn't despite them looking like a guardian sentinel, don't get me wrong they were nice headsets but never really felt like a stable finished product to me, I opted for a Reverb and now a G2 and given what's available I am pretty happy - if you have ever driven a bike or race car in real life with a helmet on, the G2 very much gives that feel as far as FOV, Index does to but SDE and lighthouses... ugh.

I was really turned off by the FOV until I took out that spacer for glasses. I still wish the FOV was bigger, but I've gotten used to it now. I am curious how I would feel going back to flat screen after this experience. Being in the game is wonderful and I actually get a bit nervous by the size of some of these planets. It's a weird feeling. My next headset will probably be the one that brings all these new technologies all together at a reasonable price. The Reverb is fine until that headset comes along.

Similar impressions as you, I've had the G2 since last December and immediately noticed the problem with the tiny sweetspot, as many others did, and was surprised reviewers didn't notice it or warn about it back then. However, once you get that 4K clarity, I couldn't go back to the O+, which just looks like a fuzzy mess all over in comparison. Similar fov to the Q2, but slightly less vertically I think, but to me the extra clarity outweighed that. It would be so much better with aspheric lenses, as the display is really hampered by that very small area of max sharpness. If you get to eyelashes touching lens distance it does improve fov and the sweetspot drop off slightly. It's still the sharpest though, and the VP2 sweetspot and lenses are even worse apparently. My next headset will definitely have aspheric lenses and a 5-6K display, and I'll be returning anything with a small sweetspot, but for now this is the best there is for sharpness I think. It's interesting on the Q2, for me it has a small sweetspot in terms of having to carefully position your eyes to get into the sharpest view, but once in there, the edge to edge clarity is almost over the entire display. If that was the case with the G2 it would be so much better.

Yes, the FOV I can get over, or work around it. The sweet spot is probably the thing I dislike about the G2 the most, although I still really enjoy playing MSFS and Elite in it. It’s a great headset, but the the ‘no compromises’ slogan that it launched with isn’t quite accurate in my opinion.

Set HMD super sampling in graphic settings in Elite to 1.5 in Horizon and 1.25 in Odyssey, u will be blown away. The FPS penalty is very minimal.

I got one last year and running a 2070 super I have to turn the setting down so low to stop the studder that I get a much better experience with my Oculus 2 with setting on high. And yeah there is a tiny clear spot and it has horrible lens flares and blur that is not nearly an issue with the O2. Felt like I made a complete down grade and went back to the Oculus. And windows mixed reality software is horrid
