@@bbittercoffee dodging into enemies is actually a sign that its a pro lol. Its called panic rolling, why would someone panic roll toward the enemy? If you panic, you want to get away from the boss quick as possible, which usually leads to them spamming the roll button and getting hit due to lack of correct timing.
@@dionylescailles4409 it's nor dodge rolling into enemies, its dodge rolling into attacks. Two very different things. Dodge rolling into enemies to keep up aggression and proximity is pro, dodge rolling into a telegraphed attack when trying to do the opposite is panic
@@dionylescailles4409 Not when you were just running towards the enemy, see that it's winding up an attack, panic and press the roll button before being able to change directions
Would’ve been a neat detail if the hero visually improve as the game goes on, such as getting armor and a better looking sword. Maybe she can eventually look like Xora at the end to show how far she’s gone.
@@sonicbralaunik9671 If the equip choice changes based on the level Paige gets to it could also represent how much of him she's carrying into the future. Like literally just an unusably large sword if you manage to die in the first fight.
I never thought of these fights from the bosses point of view. They would get scared seeing the same person come back again and again, no matter how many times they kill them. And knowing that they only have to lose once to die!
Just imagine the conversation they would have after the hero gets his ass kicked & the boss actually respawns. Example: Hero: So….. how you doing? Boss: Oh just Fine. How’d you die? Hero: *looks at ground shamefully* I got greedy and overconfident when I went to open a chest. Then a Mimic ate me…. Yeeeaaahhh~….. Boss: Ah yeah~…. They really do suck don’t they? Hero: Anyways! Let’s fucking dooooo thiiiiissss!!!!! Boss: Someone’s motivated. Very well, have at you then!
This is a really funny take on how video game bosses must feel, especially from open-world grind-y type ones. From the start of 'Wow, you really should not have come to this area yet' to 'Hmm, getting into the second phase more often now,' right up to 'OKAY, HOW IS THAT ABILITY FAIR?!'
Imagine the hero walking up to Xora in a new armor, with fiery sword and stuff, yelling: "Sup dude! So, did she gave you a raise?" - to the utter confusion of the boss. An NG+. Xora forgot everything as it wasn't happening...
In the words of one of the great CD-I Zelda games "Now.. You must die" For those unaware watch the Game Grumps session of that scene. It's fantastic lol
That "Ask the Empress to give me a raise" part almost feels like a hint, i like to believe that Xora has been rebuilt after this boss fight and continues his existence.
Damn you ABG. Yesterday you made me cry over a Tamagotchi and now you're making me have empathy for a Dark Souls boss? I HAVE NO MORE TEARS LEFT TO CRY!!!
Normally in games like this, they're super throw away little meme games. But gosh darn, they really gave the game a proper lore and everything huh? The whole SESs thing was super cool.
@@derpfluidvariant0916 if you are into manwhas (korean comics kinda) there Is one that kinda touch that concept , its called "Surviving in a action manwha"
@@soundingtheskies Yeah I guess that is true, but it would also allow us to see what the other bosses are like. See their interactions with Paige, you know?
@@kauedasilva1072 no doubt it'd be cool :) Maybe instead of every boss they just show the empress, Paige talks about everything she saw. Then after she finally beats the empress, she could say sonething like "By the way, give Xora a raise. He deserves it." Would be heccin adorbz
That'd be a really cool game concept! If you wanted to differentiate it from just playing it as Paige maybe you could decide what the Boss would say. By doing so you could determine what kind of relationship would form between hero and boss and even maybe what ending you'd get.
I love how at level 9 the hero has one hit point left and the boss is spamming upward attacks like: "C'mon, overcommit. Aw crap. Okay, THIS time you'll overcommit and lunge. Dammit. Oh screw it." **sword strike**
Well now I want a sequel that has a ton of other bosses, more mechanics, dialogue and potentially having the defeated bosses just chill out and talk to paige Also wanna see paige tap that
I liove the dialogue between the two. Paige would smash The Empress if she wasn't evil (Like so many hot villains). The thing about the plauge, higher beings, and Xora getting called a simp. I love the concept. You can play as the giant shark who chases the hero, or a swordsman who moves fast but takes short break from the stamina drain, or even the evil scientist in a mecha where you control the 2 giant hands.
everyone be speaking about the boss being a dark souls boss but almost no one is talking about the ending where the hero says "thank you for everything" to the boss. it hits me right in my soul, bro
@@thiscommonsinkt3367 Yeah my friend fought Malenia in Elden ring 30+ times and did not even get irritated he just laughed and kept his "34th times the charm" going xD
You're welcome! It's a fantastic game. Really love the bond the boss and the hero form over time and there are lots of great little touches. Awesome work!
As someone who loves playing big and slow characters or bosses, i really do like this game. Although, i would like to mention that the balance in the attacks seems pretty bad, considering how the circular attack almost never hits unless the hero is just trying to kill himself, the rising shot is pretty much OP in really close range and the sword shot attack (the one going down mostly) is pretty much one you could spam basically in all cases except for when the hero is inside of you, especially considering the whole "blade" part dealing immense damage.
I’d honestly say that adds to the feel of it- it’s similar to when you’re fighting a boss a dealing with their different attacks, sometimes getting the spammable attack that is nearly impossible to dodge so you just distance yourself and sometimes getting the free damage attacks.
i mean, it feels about right, the first one is that one terrible move that is there just for you to have a damage window, the second one is THAT move that makes you hate a boss' guts by how good it is and then you have the one that is there for you to not be able to zone out the boss to avoid the second one
Idk what’s up with the negativity in this comment section, it’s a ludum dare game for crying out loud. Game jam. Program a small game over a short period of time for the fun of it and being a part of a developer community. I am always happy to see people exploring new concepts and fun character stories through new mediums, and it’s especially impressive when the game looks fairly cohesive even when made over such a short period of time. Thanks for sharing ABG!
@@papagaiofilmes6642 How would I know? I didn't go on a hunt for those comments, I left the video not too long after, I'm just stating the higher possibility.
This is an awesome game! Would love to see a big game of it with different bosses of course and all of them having a different relationship/interaction with each boss having different fighting styles like how xora is straight forward with decent magic, god i have so many thoughts/ideas that im just gonna stop there 😅 Edit:fixed a small error
have it be a mechanic for bad players where if you die enough the boss eventually just lets you pass and if you keep visiting even joins your side (probably not as a party member tho)
Agreed a variety of bosses you play as with their own personality’s goals and ambitions, wants and desires. At some point the hero might even try sparing them or finding away around them but can’t almost feeling reluctant to move forward but still going the course because it’s what “their meant to do”. Then whenever they die they entire a purgatory and see and talk to the bosses they killed or see the bosses they spared or surrendered in their boss room doing some activate.
I really like the little detail after defeating Xoramir that the hero basically says "Thank you, Xoramir" and Xoramir told him that "But friends can call me, Xora" Man... That guy never really thought of him as a friend...
Difficulty: Average soulsbourne replayer Suddenly a level 1 guy with no armour and a stick boundary skips into your arena and absolutely demolishes you.
Does that dialouge about getting a raise mean he survives? I'm a bit confused that he kind of explodes when he's defeated but there's that whole exchange.
I'm pretty sure he's dead, it gives the same vibe as "give them hell for me" in action movies when someone is about to die and they know it, fucking sad.
Funny, I actually had a similar idea for a game, where you play as the main baddy of a videogame series that evolves from 8bit to modern 3D. Shame that I can't make videogames lmao. But good job on this. Its has great potential
@@Cavirex Evoland! It's a game where you slowly evolve from 8 bit Gameboy graphics to Hi-def poly graphics akin to post X360 and PS2/3 Era. Although instead of you playing a villain, you play the hero as usual.
I kinda want to see more games that use this concept. Playing as a giant boss with set patterns, fighting weirdly persistent heroes, maybe get to know said heroes, it's got a lot of potential and could probably get expanded into a whole game. We need more villain games dang it!
This was awesome! Really loved the friendship that you see slowly form through each encounter. It would be neat to see an extra ending where page takes the cosmic highway back in time to bring xora with her.
I wonder how many more dialogues there are. I died in the same spot, it would take serious luck or skill to get past that stage comfortably I think. Next one seems like it would be near impossible
I really love this idea of becoming the enemy in the video game and fighting the ‘good guys’. I feel like video games would be the perfect platform to do that in too. This was such a cute game, I’d love to see it more fleshed out one day
I'm sorry this bromance is adorable, and I'm kinda heartbroken how instead of something like "avenge me" or "tell the empress screw off", they only ask for a pay raise? I thought oh maybe the bosses don't die in this world but they just burst into pixels... did they know and specifically phrase it like that as not to make the hero feel too bad about it?
I'm just going to assume that Xora exploding at the end is a dramatic effect like in the Kirby games. The boss blows up, but it doesn't mean their dead.
I opened up your Puzezl video unknowingly and thought the Steven Universe-like soundtrack was for this game. It fit somehow, even with the boss battles. Especially with the deconstruction of science fiction/fantasy tropes like Steven Universe did.
Wow, this is extremely similar to a game concept that I had sketched out about 5 years ago. Well executed and beautifully made (I still haven’t made my game). I love the banter and dialogue system, I had not bought of something like that. The main thing that surprises me though, is that the camera and UI still focus on the ‘hero’. Xora is the protagonist here, so I would have chosen to keep the camera centered on him.
This isn't realistic; where's the Estas potions for the hero? Nice concept, hope to see it more fleshed out later on. Something more akin to playing as Ganon from Hyrule Warriors.
16:24 I think the dialogue here got assigned to the wrong characters lol Also, Xoramir's armor kinda reminds me of Hart's getup from the LISA fangame "LISA: the Hopeful"
@AlphaBetaGamer The guy that said he's the dev in your comments that you favorited is lying, he's not the dev. The real dev is Aplove Studios. His RU-vid picture is a stock picture of a guy.
3:15 Hilarious concept. Much better than any "reverse snas" concept 5:55 Reddit moment 9:24 Oh so you have more phases! Great! 19:17 Man that's kinda sad. I hope he survived and got the raise
a game like this would be a fun concept, like a rogue lite where when you die everything in canon resets so you can build relationships with bosses and shit, call that a Roguelite Datingsim ARPG
Had the same idea for one of my projects when studying at AIE. The general idea is the same with the reversed roles, but my idea extended to having levels the AI hero would have to traverse to get to the boss, with you choosing from a list of AI cannon fodder to fight the hero. You would have to try and weaken them before they arrived at the boss fight, choosing from a list of enemies they seem weaker to, to spawn in (sort of Rock paper scissors depending on what the enemy hero is randomly using as a weapon). the concept of making it a 2 player pvp game also made sense as a logical add. It sort of spawned from playing "Crawl" but i think the challenge at the time was to come up with a unique side scroller mechanic.
I feel like this game would be massively improved by focusing more on the game and less on the humour and dialogue. It's really not necessary to the game, and ironically makes me go "yeah blah blah blah cut to the chase." It's supposed to be a bit of fun self-irony but it actually just gets cumbersome imo. It's definitely an interesting concept, very worth exploring, however it does lack focus. There are many mechanics that could improve it greatly, but of course, this was a time-sensitive project.
