Reverse contouring is an amazing technique but especially for those with things to cover. Redness. Acne. The reason it works so well is that the contouring colour is placed above the normal area. A dark colour will cover redness and acne much better than a light colour. Give it a try and let me know.

I see a lot of comments saying it's okay for men to use bb creams and other products to touch up spots or blemishes on their face. Just wanted to say, it's totally fine for guys to experiment with other makeup too! Makeup is an art and shouldn't be limited to just one gender.
@qsharaf3933
@qsharaf3933 8 лет назад
i totally agree! and also, it shouldn't be seen that all male makeup artists or men that wear it are gay!
@lesleykurdi873
@lesleykurdi873 6 лет назад
αι ℓιи 艾琳 this is true, and iv had a couple of boyfriends who’ve worn make up. You do run the risk of putting women off if it’s noticeable though. If your gay then no problem. Not many women want a man with a made up look. Jonny Depp looks amazing in kohl but he smudges it and wears it in a masculine way, it’s in the application I suppose. Good for you though.

Here's a secret...some of us straight men,(very few Im sure) use a tiny bit of touch up now & again to cover redness. I grew up with 4 sisters, so I learned a thing or two about about makeup. If women can hide flaws, why cant men? ;) cheers!
@sabrinaclift1180

***** I second that! :) Very little brings out a guy's good looks more than an even skin tone on his face.
@El.Muerto
@El.Muerto 9 лет назад
Definitely. I'm a good looking guy, but sometimes have dark circles under my eyes, sometimes have blemishes on the skin etc etc. So I don't find any shame in resolving that with the little bit of makeup from time to time. I have my own little set lol I'm secure with my masculinity, some people are so silly with stereotypes.. I believe those are the ones who are insecure.

Im 26 and used to wear eyeliner. Im perfectly straight. For some reason I found it fun to do things that require lots of detail. My girlfriend was a little worried about me at first hoping I wasnt swinging the wrong way until I explained why I liked doing it. I asked her if she would let me do her makeup and she was definitely open to the idea. There is no wrong in expressing ones creativity I believe. I just did her nails the other day, and she was worried the whole time I was bored or was just doing it because I was dissatisfied with how she looked, which was totally not the case. I just explained its fun to take something and transform it. It should be fun to do her makeup next!

+John Quintana nothing to be ashamed. people seem to forget how in certain music (eg rock and metal) men wear visible make up and they DO NOT look any feminine or gay. also, men who are actors and/or musicians who film something usually wear make up on set since certain things are picked up by cameras and certain look better. but that's another thing people seem not to give a shit about when they assume every men with make up is gay. good on you, man. it's great you feel comfortable and you do what you like. keep it up :).

i'm a straight dude and i think BB cream is make-up for any dude seriously especially the ones going through puberty and have mad redness and acne going on. It really helps. If my sister didn't show it to me i would of been extremely sad everytime i wentout. So yeah i'd say BB-cream is a necessity.

Mad V and increase your exposure to preservatives and carcinogens for your skin at a younger age. that is why men often times have healthier skin in the elder years as opposed to women! We need conscious makeup corporations!!

oh and also BB cream is great sun protection which is important for me because i take minocycline pills. (Anti skin blemish pills which warn you not to have too much sun exposure while taking the drug)
@DarthMadV
@DarthMadV 8 лет назад
and now i also use a prescription cream at night called Retrieve. The two medications together will irradiate any acne or pimples so i highly recommend going to your doctor and asking to use the treatments together Minocycline and Retrieve. One attacks the source from the inside while the other takes care of the scars and acne that's already developed It's about 63$ together but the pills last a month and the cream like..3 months. By the time you need another all your pimples should be gone. Trust me don't waste money with NON-perscription treatment... It won't work like these medicines will and in a short amount of time. Also use BB-cream that moisturises and protects from sun every morning to keep your skin safe from the sun and follow your doctors instructions.. If you listened.. come back here and tell me how it's working :) It works for me and my skin is stubborn AF. Most acne is hormone related... so that weak over the counter junk won't work because it's not a proper medicine . that goes for any treatment beyond acne/pimples. I used so much facial wash junk you can get a chemists and supermarkets as a teen and it was all just a waste of money! Don't waste time/money just go to your doctor and get prescriptions.

As a guy, I'm not really that big on wearing makeup, but there have been times that I have needed to, but had no idea what I'm doing... so inevitably just caked it on and looked more like a mannequin. It's refreshing to see another guy applying makeup in order to look sharp as a guy. Never heard of contouring before. Will definitely revisit this tutorial should another occasion call for me to do some complexion sprucing. Good work and thanks.

Wayne, can you make a video about liquid illuminators? I've noticed a bunch of them on the market, and I'm curious. It'd be lovely if you could explain/demonstrate how best to use them: as bases/primers, highlights, bronzers, etc.? Also, are they worth the investment? Chanel and Nars charge a pretty penny for them, but Revlon has a more affordable option. I'd love to hear your recommendations/thoughts. Your videos are so informative and honest. x

This actually explains how I've always found I like my makeup. Which is where I use a yellow toned concealer for me red under eyes and the lightest shade of every commercial makeup product is darker than my skin already. Then a bit of highlight down the nose. Powder the oil slicks, bit of concealer on any trouble spots. Good to go. Loved seeing this, and also the new tips on applying the primer moisturizer, foundation and so on.

This is amazing (as always) but the geek in me is wondering WHY reverse contouring helps with redness more than traditional contouring does. Anyone know?
@jasminecovell2616
@jasminecovell2616 10 лет назад
I suppose because with the darker foundation on the redder parts it makes it harder for the redness to show through, even if your make up starts to fade a bit through the day. The lighter colors keep with the principle of your facing having 'dimensions' and not being just one 'flat' color.
@hrani
@hrani 10 лет назад
I've noticed that most of the lightest foundations have a bit of a red tint to them, since they're usually targeted for people with light, almost translucent skin: redheads, nordic types, naturally light-colored people with the circulation under the skin showing through. (Asian make-up lines have a yellowish/tan tint to even the lightest foundations, more like ivory.) And if you put white on top of red, you get pastelly pink. Tan/yellow-toned, darker foundations on top of reddish skin transform the red tone into a more tanned-looking finish instead of a washed out pink. Pink+contour might look a bit peculiar, also, where tan+contour just looks sunbathed.
@shanzjensen
@shanzjensen 10 лет назад
Because covering the redness with a slightly darker shade is easier than using your own shade which can make it look pale and pasty. At least that's what he said in the beginning. :-)
@patriciacooley362
@patriciacooley362 5 лет назад
I think he said that it washes out your face and makes you pale. This has been true in my case.
@jellyropes
@jellyropes 4 года назад
Contouring isn't made to address skin tone or color correction. It's meant to create a balance of shadows and light. If you are suffering redness, a more yellow based foundation or a green color corrector are helpful.

I discovered reverse contouring first, from Eve Pearl years ago. I have always had red cheeks, but never realized how... one dimensional, & washed out my base looked when I applied just 1 shade that matched my skin. This really changed my makeup game, & I love love love it! For me, I feel it does more than just help diminish the redness. I feel it helps me attain a much more youthful appearance, all over. I feel it's especially genius for the no makeup, makeup looks. Or when I am trying to get out the door in 5 min. It makes life much easier! lol

Yes you can still contour! Find the darkest shade possible then buy highlighter. It will still work on you ur just using darker colors... If you use highlighter it will work well. :) Use lighter color forehead chin tips of nose and under eyes

you can definitely still highlight :)!! you could also maybe try using a foundation colour just a tiny bit lighter than your skin, so for contouring you can then go for your skin colour and then lighter again for the highlight :)? xxx

Yes! Contouring doesn't always work on us but what you need to do is use your highlighter just above the cheekbones like he did in this video. That will actually create a natural contour affect on the cheekbones as the light hits the lighter part and casts a shadow underneath. There's also no need to buy a special "highlighter" product as those are only really needed by girls with light skin. All you have to do is buy a shade of concealer/powder/foundation that is about two shades lighter and blend.

Is contouring one's face the same thing as bronzing? I get confused with this. I just learned how to bronze so that it does not look like clown make up but contouring has me intrigued. Which way would be easiest to start with for a beginer.... concealer, cream foundation, or liquid foundation?
@melissaruiz4086
@melissaruiz4086 10 лет назад
bronzing is more of warming up the face, giving it a sun kissed, tan, or glow look which is why many bronzers have some shimmer. As for contouring you're concentrating more on the natural shadows of the face, giving a slimmer effect, and adding more structure to the face. Thats why it is recommended to work with a darker color with grey or cool undertones. As for me I started bronzing my face, then started contouring with powder, and now I prefer creams as it gives me a more flawless and precise finish :)

I think I understand why u put the darker color on the redness... but why exactly do u put a lighter color underneath the cheekbone? I'm trying to figure out the "science" of this technique & I guess I don't 100% understand lol If the colors are blended together anyways, doesn't it just end up being about the same color everywhere? Hmm I'm just not quite getting it... wonderful tip tho I'll definitely have to try it out, as I'm very pale with rosy cheeks! I usually don't even wear blush hehe

I like the kiehl's avacado eye cream. Has made a visible difference in my dark circles and puffiness.

I found your channel last night and fell in love. You explain things so well and give info for different skin types and I just love it. Feel better prepared for the next time I apply and buy makeup.

would love you to do a contour video for the few of us who have gaunt or naturally very protruding cheek bones - some tips on how to look less bony/hollow mouthed please without resorting to fillers etc. Happy to be the guinea pig!

I have learned so much from you, but this tip just rocked my world!! Instead of going to bed after washing my face I put on my make up this way. Jezzy Creezy, I look so good I don't want to wash it back off!!! I just love you Wayne!! ;-x

Wow this is actually really helpful because I have slight rosacea and when I always try to apply foundation you can still see it and it causes me to apply more foundation and powder which leads to cakiness. If I would go darker it would look like a major change in color from my normal skin type so this really makes sense. Thank you!
