Reversing Direction Knitting in the Round

Use short rows to change direction when knitting in the round. I created this tutorial for knitting my La Peregrina sweater which features a lace yoke followed by a reverse stockinette body. With this technique, you can knit the lace with the right side facing you, then switch to work the reverse stockinette as stockinette.

Right?! It seems so simple, but boy it took me a few tries to get there!

Probably everyone already knows about this...NO! I have never seen or heard of this particular application for short rows... and it was exactly what I was looking for. It is such a simple solution but I never considered it...Thanks for JUST DOING IT.

Thank youuuuuu!! I’m a knitting beginner and english is my second language. Every other tutorial was just so full of casual knitting lingo that I didn’t understand, but this one made it so easy to grasp!

I've been knitting socks for decades and recently started working argyles, which require turning the work to purl in the round. This technique is so elegant, seamless and easy. TY TY TY!

Designing and making a hat with a purl ridge. This is exactly what my brain wanted to do but didn't know how!! So much easier than knitting backwards. Thank you!!

With a wrap and turn, this is actually a really old technique. I’ve seen it done on most 18th C stockings and baby sweaters I’ve examined in museums. The garter rows at the top of stockings, and bottom of tiny baby sweaters were usually done with wrap and turn to work he purl ridges. 250 years ago! Cool, huh?

Very cool! There really is nothing new under the sun, but it's nice to stumble on something and think 'hey, this is worth sharing!'

Stephanie Earp yes, that is why Elizabeth Zimmermann techniques she made up “unventing”. She could not believe she had made it up, first, but she had never seen it before. So she coined the word. AFAIK, I’m the first modern history buff to write about the technique relative to the artifacts. Before I wrote about it in a list serve, back in the early 2000s, it wasn’t mentioned in any writing we (other historic knitters and curators I know) could find.

Brilliant! Thanks you, Stephanie, for giving a solution to something I though was possible but did not know how to work out. This worked perfectly for my hat, which I am knitting in the round. I modified what you did to get a garter stitch in the round by switching back and forth from right side to wrong side.

Thank you! I’m knitting a sweater where the whole body is purl stitch and I just didn’t want to haha I knew there had to be a way to knit it “inside out” it’s simple enough but as a visual learner, I appreciate the video!

Very helpful, thank you! Want to make a sweater that has a twisted stitch yoke and then an entire body of reverse stockinette. Thought there had to be a way to do it inside out but hadn't figured it out. Now I know how. Thanks so much for sharing this!

Thank you! Whether this is an innovative technique or not, I'm grateful that you've taken the time to publish this tutorial. I do have a question, though: when beginning the second round, and the first two loops, on the left-hand needle, are the legs from that stitch that was pulled up over the right-hand needle -- can those two loops be knit together, instead of purling them together? Did you purl them together simply to remain in pattern?
@taylorjurgens7670
@taylorjurgens7670 10 месяцев назад
Is the German stich necessary? Can't you just flip the work so the round of stitches and the body of the work is between you and the needles instead of behind the needles? So, your body, then work, then needles, instead of your body then needles, then work behind? Nevermind, I just saw you answered this on another comment.

Ah okay, but I can’t do that every row, right? Going back and forth? I thought I could make some horizontal colorwork like this maybe… :/

If your double stitch is on a knit stitch rather than a purl stitch like in this video, what decrease do you recommend? k2tog tbl? k2tog? ssk? (And thank you so much for this video it's just what I was looking for!)
@StephanieEarp
@StephanieEarp 3 года назад
K2tog or P2tog is what I use - and I've seen some patterns call it KDtog, for "knit double stitch together" which is probably more accurate!

Thanks so much for this video! I need to reverse my knitting direction on a bottom-up sweater that’s worked in the round, so that the private side of the bottom ribbing will become the public side, and vice versa, before I start the stitch pattern for the body. For some reason that I don’t really understand, when I knit ribbing, it looks better and more even on the wrong side! I figured doing a turn as if for a short row would do the trick, but I was concerned that when I came around again to the beginning of the round, the join would look weird since the fabric on the left side of the join would be 2 rows higher than the fabric on the right side of the join (1 extra row from the short row, and another extra row due to the spiral nature of in-the-round knitting). So you found that to be unnoticeable in your project?

Exactly what I was looking for BUT what is the function of the GSR (or double) stitch?
@StephanieEarp
@StephanieEarp 4 года назад
The double stitch will hide the gap that would usually occur if you just switch directions. It performs the same function as a wrap and turn in a short row.
@donnasteinfeld7236
@donnasteinfeld7236 4 года назад
@@StephanieEarp Thank you! So if I understand correctly, WITHOUT the double stitch there would be a hole. So glad I saw your video.....I've been looking all over for an explanation of this! Now I'll be able to knit your Peregrina!
