I just bought the same car and it is sooo good!! Very comprehensive review, spot on.

Focus ST is such a fun and practical car. Loving my '16 every day for almost a year. Also, for anyone curious, the basic infotainment center really is quite good despite how basic it looks. Bluetooth connectivity is significantly more reliable than 2018 optioned out Outbacks I've been in, and the backup camera is the best I've used for a car in this price range despite how small. No glare, and the rear bumper is visible in camera view.

I just bought one of these last Thursday! Love it so far!

Just bought one of these, sight-unseen, brand new (10 miles) from the dealer (who delivered it to me with the paperwork!), and WOW, am I impressed. I was just looking for a urban putt-putter to run errands with, all at a reasonable price and this was a real shocker, after I made the decision on paper (and after many reviews of reviews on YT). It was delivered for right around $21,000 total and although it's the base ST1, it's all that I had anticipated it to be--and more. I haven't had a new Ford product for a few years (got interrupted by a family member's employee purchase discount for FCA stuff) and I've got to say that Ford is doing a much better job with quality--and quality control--than anything I've seen, owned and driven from FCA. I have to believe this is one of the better buys out there for what you get, and I am looking forward to a few good years of owning this guy. I have another primary vehicle (SUV AWD) so the ST will be the part-timer and not really needed to be used in the (Michigan) winters. Looking forward to having a reasonably good performer coupled with reasonably good gas mileage and reasonably good form and function for a GREAT price!

Hey Matt, Nice review first of all! As an ST owner myself I wanted to make a few points. The Recaros are only offered in the ST2 and ST3 packages, the ST1 seats are not Recaros. I think another point worth mentioning is that a fully optioned ST is going to be cheaper than its competitors that are equally optioned. Sure, it' doesn't have the AWD of the WRX or the refinement of the GTI but I think it's a hell of a value, especially in the ST2 trim. I was cross shopping a WRX, GTI, and the ST and went for the ST because of its value for the $$, and most of all the smiles it gives you every time you get in. It's a great car.

I got to review a 2015 ST that was modified to 253whp and 330tq and that turned no torque steer into torque steer on demand. But it pulled like crazy and it made all the right noises so no complaints there. It also had the ST3 package so practically full option. Very nice seats those Recaro's! The Fiesta ST seems like more of a driver orientated car, the Focus ST seems like a grand tourer in comparison. But I like power and a GT like ride... So that isn't much of an issue.

Love golf gti's, but everyone has them. The focus st and wrx are my favorite sporty compacts for their pricw. Tuning then phenomenal for th track.

Matt these seats feel less aggressive because it's the base model. You can still get the recaros if you upgrade trims.

It's a nice middle ground between the regular Focus and the RS. I'm just glad to see Ford going nuts with all these performance cars across their lineup.

I test drove one just like this. Base Focus ST. Yes, it's cheaper inside than a GTI but it's pretty fun and you do notice that torque. I like the car a lot. Not as pure fun as the Fiesta ST I drove. But as an only car, the Focus is more comfortable and roomier. The base Focus ST are very good. The shifter was awesome too. Considering dealers are selling these near me for under $21K right now, a pretty good deal at that price.

Thanks for the review Matt from many others and myself. Just wish you reviewed the ST3, dollar for dollar (at least in Canad) its comparable to the other brands you mentioned. Nevertheless, another great review.

I added the Boomba oval shift knob. Makes a huge difference in shifting feel. Way smoother and more satisfying.

People who tell you what car to buy are jealous that they can't afford what you can so they think they could spend your own money better than you can. The 2016 Mustang GT is the car for you so congratulations on the new one with the black package.

I dont like the rims that much thinking of swapping it out with something aesthetically pleasing and light weight but will it mess up the overall performance? Aerodynamics?cooling?

I have a 2008 HHR SS, I think that would be a great addition to Matt's review collection. I live near him as well so it would be pretty easy to get it to him if it did ever happen.

My 2014 ST has 36000 miles on it and the clutch still grabs very early in the throw. I'm guessing it also has something to do with the pedal positioning

I just bought my 2017 st1 today and now I feel like I should’ve got a st2 or st3. But the price was perfect. 17k wasn’t to bad with less then 1000 miles on it.

Fair point that the base model is lacking compared to the competition's base models. However, I wish you could have done an ST2/3. Cleans up the interior a lot.

On slippery roads I wished I had the RS .. otherwise amazingly fun very affordable car , especially now when the new sti comes out

The main reason why I bought a 2016 over 2013-2014 Ford Focus ST was because of the LED day time running lights, rear camera(the focus st needed it bad trust me) and the numbers on the gauges doesn't look like it came from pep boys or it was hand painted. Other than that, its a great sleeper for the fools who think its just a focus. Nice focus.... Yeah.... Wow it's has a 6 speed.... Yeah.... What's up with those gauges.... Don't worry about....Why don't you hop in 😈😈😈

Just an FYI, the clips that were shown of the MK7 GTI interior were actually of the MK7 Golf R. They're pretty much identical but I noticed the blue needles in the gauge cluster

you have to consider, when talking about the outdated infotainment base model screen, that this car starts around 22k, and upgrading to an ST2 is like 2k more. still plenty cheap to get that larger touch screen unit.

Got a '17 Focus ST myself and I agree with everything you said about it. It truly is a fun car to drive. The gas mileage is terrible (16 mpg/city) but then it's so difficult keeping your right foot out of it. The torque is addictive and effortless. However, I do have a Rosch catback exhaust on it so I'm sure that effects the mileage. But I also have more torque as well and I feel (and hear) it! Just a great car overall.

You mentioned the word Revised several times about the car's details. What needs revising is the dealership selling procedures on this car.

Love the look of the Focus Hatchbacks, just such a shame with the interior quality and layout. I get it, they aren't meant to be luxury vehicles and they want to keep the cost down, but it's still hard to imagine getting excited about the interior every time I sat in it.

Why does it have the old ST wheels?

Those contemplating an ST should NOT be turned off by the "aged" ST1 interior. It flat works, especially for us "mature drivers" who learned to drive in cars with 6 volt electrical systems. Clicky-buttons may be old school, but are easier - and safer - to use while in motion. As far as Nav, my Garmin Zumo is familiar, and can be moved from the ST to my Corvette to my motorcycle to my F-150 to my wife's Subie, and I don't have to re-learn it - and re-program it - every time. Also, as Matt says, the ST1 seats are way more comfy than the Recaros. After doing my research, I selected a 2018 ST1 in white (like the test car) as to me, all the farkles added by ST2 and ST3 add cost, complexity and weight that don't justify the expense or convenience. And, they don't make the car handle better or go faster, so if, like me, track days are in your car's future, go ST1.

Like my ST a lot, but it seriously needs a good LSD if you plan to use anything close to full throttle in the first two or three gears.
