I wonder how it stacks up performance wise against the 2005-06 Corolla XRS with its 6 speed manual and 8,200 rpm redline from the Lotus spec 2zz engine.
Thank god for keeping manual transmission? ? Shouldn't you thank god for developing automatic transmission? It makes sense doesn't it. Now you have your hands free to just about anything. Now that's a miracle!!!
@Marfran Dema I mean traffic and crowded cities make up how much of the United States? You act like there’s no room to drive them without traffic. Nice sarcasm tho.
can you share your experience with real fuel economy on this model? What is real MPG in the city and on the highway cause i dont belive that car can make 31 mpg in the city
This video came out 7 minutes ago and the video is 31 minutes long, but there's already a dislike😑... People are just haters. Anyways keep the great vids up👍.
To each their own. I drove only NA but I now have the 2018 Civic Sport with the manual and it’s great. It’s pretty damn quick and fun to drive. Also get 45 MPG on the highway quite easily, just saying.
@@ViralityoflifeI've seen those numbers, and I've gotta say something doesn't add up. Honda's Civic SI allegedly gets 38 mpg on the highway putting out 205 hp with a turbo, 2mpg more than a naturally aspirated corolla and as much or better than any other econobox on the market? Yea, sounds fishy. Someone's gonna get hit with another lawsuit it seems.
npitu04 how? I even have a Hondata tune on my civic now (+6 psi) and I’m still getting the same numbers. It has to do with the way the engine is tuned mixed with the gear ratio. A more powerful engine doesn’t have to work as hard to keep going under the same conditions.
Matt! I have had my SE man for 6mos. What sold me was your review (1430) . Yes, it's a blast to drive! Way way way... better handling and aerodynamics than the old model. 170hp in a Corolla = FUN. Cool feature no one told me about was the car holds itself in place until the tires turn. No roll backs when starting on a hill. As a skilled driver I felt a tad insulted at first, but now I love that feature. Especially street parking in the winter. Great review. Pete in Canada.
I saw a corolla last week. the body style reminds me of the old Lexus is300 which was a superb car. I would love for Toyota to throw out a RWD I6 sedan
LED running lights look great but 90% of the owners will mistaken them for the headlights and drive at night with their headlights off and then complain about how their visibility sucks.
U can't do that on the newer Toyotas. If your headlights are off, then your DRL is off. Your DRL is only on if you have headlights turned on or in auto mode.
Newer Toyota's have auto headlights. Once set to auto, headlights come on automatically when it's dark or you're driving in inclement weather and the wiper blades are on. Great safety feature. I see idiots in Nissan Rogues do that because those DRLs can't be turned off. They don't realize that all lights aren't turned on.
I leave it automatic mode. Set and forget it so. So, the DRL go off and the headlights come on at night automatically. I've seen people either don't have lights or just have their DRL when its getting dark. For safety reasons, I think the government should require auto headlights on all cars so that those iditots don' t be driving without lights or just DRL when it's not quite dark.
Matt, This is a terrific review of an impressive car. The SE manual may be the best Corolla 'sports sedan' that we have ever seen. With so many fundamental improvements built into this generation, it is such a pity the interior dimensions of the new sedan/hatch won't fit taller drivers and passengers. Watching you gleefully shift through the gears makes me wonder again why Toyota won't build a manual Camry to further enhance the vastly improved dynamics of its TNGA platform. For the record, I will note that Canadians also get a base L with a #manual for thousands less than the SE. Lastly, you deserve credit for disclosing the fact you are the guest of Toyota at events like this. Disclaimers like that should be a mandatory part of every RU-vid review.
We recorded a video to show difference between Corolla L and Corolla GLI - all base version in USA and Brazil ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HG5YezmXIiM.html
The interior quality has really improved on the 2020 + and is a very welcome change. These commuter cars do not need to go fast or be sporty, but comfort has always been lacking and am so glad they finally did something about it. Is one of the reasons I just bought a new 22 and am really enjoying it so far, it's only got just a lil over 300mi and am in the process of breaking it in. It's what I love about buying new, I know what's been done to it and will break it in right. The armrests are padded and made of a nice n soft material, plus the dash isn't hard plastic any longer either and have really changed it all up a lot
This looks terrific. The 2020 Corolla is really making a strong case for itself. Consistent, reliable power (NA ftw), bulletproof engine, cozy ride with sharp handling and a plush interior. It’s hard to turn such a well rounded car down. On another note, manual! What a crazy world we live in where a Corolla gives a stellar manual when the new 2019 Mazda3 sedan doesn’t give one at all (and it’ll cost 3k more 🤣🤣🤣)
iQuattro1 I don’t know about the 2019+ model, but at least the last gen mazda3 had awesome driving dynamics. Too bad the reliability is about the same as a Ford Focus. There’s a reason for this - they share a lot of parts except for the engine, which has an extremely high compression ratio, and even lower reliability than the Focus engine.
This car has one of the best styles,. I have ever seen. This is going to be my next car, I really like that futuristic, aggressive, yet conservative style, it is super awesome. The Sedan Toyota Corolla 2020 is so far the best car I have ever seen.
Corolla has always been a conservative car, focused on comfort. It isn't a sporty performance car and bold design, but it's a low fuel consumption, great value for resale and very reliable, with low maintenance cost. For this reason Corolla is the top selling car in the world.
We had a new 2016 S for 18 months, and 6,100 miles. We enjoyed the problem free experience but the road noise was terrible. Also, it had a bunch of rattles. New one looks great and looks more comfortable, but seems like it’s still going to be a nice tin can.
SubieN8 my gfs sister also has an S. Definitely one of the more plastic-y cars I’ve been in. Lots of rattles already, headlights fading, all that stuff. One thing I definitely give Toyota props for is standard LED headlights and the fuel economy. Nice car for the money, but in the end it’s an economy car, costs gotta be cut somehow right?
We need more manual transmissions with a clutch, on the market. Really glad Toyota is doing this. Now, they just need to add it to their trucks... and bring back something like the old mid 90s Nissan hardbody compact trucks. Those were so awesome. Great video... manual cvt has nothing on the true driving pleasure of a REAL manual, with a clutch. You have to have a clutch to really FEEL the joy of driving.
Just bought the 2020 corolla se 6mt, the iMT literally makes this car so easy to drive, you don't even have to touch the gas when down shifting. I keep that off but its nice to have for road trips or just those days. Infotainment is great, except there isnt ANDROID AUTO yet and they told me it had it. Licensing issues need to be addressed and I'm hoping it comes to my car :(. The 6speed does have long throws and second gear is a bit odd shifting into, but it's a solid transmission that's easy for beginners and easy to feel the gears. Very nice car, and I'm glad I bought it. Will be getting the cross bars and praying for android auto.
'Great review, Matt. Extremely thorough, including driving a manual trans version, as well. I like your usage of stock video showing the different colors available and the car in-motion. It seems particularly evasive of Toyota to not only not offer Android Auto yet, but to not even disclose whether the current infotainment system will allow being upgraded, later. It's time they got this one issue resolved for all their vehicles.
Got an SE sedan about a week ago, fully loaded with the JBL Audio system. Coming from a previous gen 17 SE, this is a nice step up from Toyota. A lot of people don't care for the overall design, but it grew on me. Overall I'm really liking it.
I def think between this and the civic I would go with this. I saw one in white and was quite surprised by how nice it looked. The proportions are spot on. SE 6 speed FTW !!!
revans425 I love the design as well. I hopped in a hatchback in the county fair and it felt tight compared to my TC which it derives from in a way. Funny because I’m a short guy too(5’6”).
I test drove an SE hatch and an XSE hatch both CVT because it's all they had, and I was very impressed with the driving dynamics and comfort. I was not impressed by the lack of sunroof availability on any trim level, no android auto, and no remote start available. I did like the look overall, 18" wheels are beauty, and the safety suite with everything standard, and wireless charging pad. The hatch is really small in the backseat, and something like the Honda fit has much more usable cargo capacity than the Corolla hatch, but if max MPG and comfort for 1 or 2 people are your game, this car is definitely worth a look. The CVT is really that good honestly.
Definitely, better looks appealing to younger buyers and the technology people ask for+more safety tech. Only thing I see better in the civic is space and drivetrain options.
when my 09 scion hits 225k (currently 127k) this sweet baby will be next (used of course). WOW did Toyota do a great job on the styling! It's a bit noisy it seems though. Just hope they are reliable as the previous gens. Nice vid.
carl basbas yea I know. This is huge. Toque vectoring is fancy stuff, and is nearly (in some cases as good) as a proper limited slip differential. No wonder everyone loves the way it handles
I’m a driving a 2007 Toyota Matrix just like that loool ,I’m waiting another year then thinking about getting a 2020 se 6 speed cause I’m sick of driving a “beater car”.But damn the reliability on this thing is insane nothing but oil changes and one spark plug change and filters in the last 2 years
Some of those safety features that Toyota made standard across the board are optional on others like the Civic. But all others have Android Auto that the Toyota still does not have
@@JDsHouseofHobbies Sucking on a lemon yeah, I can see that. Lol. If Toyota stayed with the hatchback front end it would pass as ok, but they bought the top edge of the guppy mouth forward. It looks strange and heavy looking. The rear end doesn't look quite right either. There seems to be a lot of design elements in vehicles that are just put there to be different.
I wonder how it stacks up performance wise against the 2005-06 Corolla XRS with its 6 speed manual and 8,200 rpm redline from the Lotus spec 2zz engine.
Short answer: It doesn't. The XRS was about 500 pounds lighter, with similar power and way better gearing. Used to drive a 6 speed celica GTS and now drive a 2020 6 speed SE Corolla. I love it, but I miss my leather seats and 8400 rpm redline
I owned a 2005 Corolla XRS manual. So much fun to drive the only gripe I had is engine would stall at about 2k rpm on cold start and on stop and go traffic. The dealership said there was no recall for my model. Regardless, I would still buy another Corolla, maybe an automatic.
Breck Greenwall it is a bit overdone, but the super clean rear makes up for it. And as “a bit much “ as the front end admittedly is, it is less “a bit much” than the rear of the current Civic.
I just bought a new car for commuting. Got a 2019 Hyundai Sonata SE (11 miles on it) for $18,127. I know Hyundai isn’t up to Toyota’s reliability reputation or resale value, but I feel like there is very little value in the cars they sell these days. Last generation Camry was a “value”. Toyota is using their reputation to over charge in my opinion. The Corolla with very similar equipment is 5 grand more than a full sized sedan (Sonata) which is labeled “mid-size” to be in a more competitive market. I test drove the 2019 Camry. I greatly preferred the SE Camrys looks over my car, but I also preferred the Sonatas clean & function interior layout, the automatic in the Sonata is way smoother, has a quieter cabin, and the interior space/trunk/overall comfort (especially the back seats) is better in the Sonata. The last generation Camry SE you could’ve got the sticker price down to 20k ish. Now you’re lucky if you can get it below 25k. I’ll choose value over a prestigious logo any day, and this is coming from a guy who owned an Audi S-line too.
Well to be fair, the MSRP for your Sonata is over 23k. If we're comparing MSRP vs. MSRP, the base Camry is only about $500 more. You were able to knock 5k off your Sonata's price because it's at the end of its generation with a redesigned 2020 model being revealed in April. This Camry generation is only 2 years old. In time there will be discounts on these new Toyotas as well if someone wants to wait for them. I agree though that historically, Hyundai usually hands out bigger discounts which is great as long as you don't plan to sell it, since it hurts resale.
Hyundai/KIA cars drive like an appliance. I drove Elantra GT Sport 6MT, it is supposed to be their "hot-hatch" and it was terrible. First gear does not accelerate at all, just gets going. Acceleration starts when you switch to 2nd gear. Rear headroom is bad. Interior is dirt-cheap, but MSRP was actually comparable to Toyota/Honda. Koreans are still very bad with handling and engines, but they compensate by overloading features: standard LED headlights, cooled seats etc. But I would rather buy a car that is enjoyable to drive. It is sad, but 2018 Honda Fit 6MT with torsion beam is more fun to drive than 2018 Elantra GT Sport 6MT with multilink setup.
Fun/comfortable/reliable smaller car if you can grab an SE manual for around $20K. The looks have improved a ton IMO. Toyota should have dumped the old 1.8 powerplant completely. The 169hp engine should be standard.
im glad toyota is coming back down to earth with there styling for like the last 10 years i just havent been interested in anything toyota has made due to styling too futuristic and wierd for me but a few cars have been okay
This car has one of the best styles,. I have ever seen. This is going to be my next car, I really like that futuristic, aggressive, yet conservative style, it is super awesome. The Sedan Toyota Corolla 2020 is so far the best car I have ever seen.
@@deet4895 Do you drive looks or do you drive a car? Looks only matters to kids, when you had proved yourself everything you start to care about interior looks and comfort. I have 2017 Corolla iM hatch and I love it. 2019 Corolla hatch is a horrible redesign. They killed all utility: trunk is tiny, rear legroom and headroom are gone. Yes, it drives great and looks good, but who exactly is going to buy it now? The whole point of a hatchback is utility and Toyota did not get it right.
I have a 2018 se, nice little car, 2600 miles and I have a rattle in the dash and my mpg isn’t as good as it’s supposed to be, lot of road noise. I like the cvt so far, the engine runs like a top, over all its a great little grocery getter and looks sporty.
Great video Matt. I plan on buying a 6 speed manual corolla in the near future. What is your opinion of these dynamic force engines that Toyota is putting in these new corollas? Are they as reliable as corollas in the past or is it too soon to tell?
I sat in the back seat of a hatch version today and was really surprised how poor both the rear legroom was and how awkward ingress/egress was from the back seat. Curious if the shape of the sedan improves this a touch over the hatch. There is a lot to like about this car, but the one step backward is definitely interior space utilization.
syncro87 The Sedan will have more backseat legroom. How often do you have passengers in the backseat? The Hatch is workable for occasional passengers in the back on short trips but it is generally a single person or couples car... mine will have the backseat folded down 95% of the time. Now if they would just bring the New Corolla SportWagon to the US, that would be a great option!- more backseat room and the cargo hauling capacity of a true wagon/hatchback. #bringbackthewagon #wewantwagons #hopetheygiveusanAWDCorollaWagon!
@syncro87 Toyota should being the Sport Touring Estate Wagon here to the USA It rides on a longer wheelbase than the sdn and hb and is more practical and best value, plus it looks really good! Tell Toyota to being the wagon to the USA.
Thought I'd give an update. I just went the other day to test drive a 6 speed 2020 SE the other day. All in all I really like it, but a serious issue I had was the clutch. Uptake on it is VERY high in the travel, to the point where you think you're slipping the clutch everytime you shift. It's a little odd. Matt Maran made the same comment when he was driving it and I completely agree. It was definitely higher than any car I've had. EVO X and e90 3 series, but even much higher than a manual, regular Ford Fiesta I had. It is a pretty serious turn off.
IMO, if you want the most higher trim of Corolla (XSE) then go for Forte GT (Here in Canada it is fully loaded) and vice- versa. 2020 Corolla price jump from SE to XSE is too high, however less fun to drive compared to Forte GT (i.e hp 169 vs 201) which you can get it with almost same price (there is no manual option for GT in Canada tho and some time its a deal breaker). Because of the reliability of corolla, the resale value will potentially hold more value than any other brands and as resale value usually does not differ much from trim to trim (most of the old car buyers don’t bother about trims rather than the model and brand), lower trims to XSE will allow you more bang of your buck after couple of years! BTW, according to me, 2020 Forte GT (most higher trim of Forte) is way better (i.e interior and exterior styling, features, infotainment, warranty, road noise etc) in almost every sectors than 2020 Corolla XSE except the reliability that is well known for all the Toyota cars (I do respect Toyota, I believe no brands can beat Toyota in terms of reliability, I had Toyota in past) in which area Kia is coming forward as well (please see the reliability rating of last few years on small sedan cars). However, XSE and Forte GT both are very good cars. If you can afford, get any one from these two based on your preference! Taste varies person to person! BTW Enjoy mate!
From the title I thought the 2020 Corolla has both manual and auto mode, but realized it's a review of both the manual and automatic. I would like to have a car that has both manual and automatic especially when you share a car maybe with your partner and you drive manual but he/she drives auto, vice versa, or you share the car with your parents, siblings, whatever, and have different preferences on the transmission, you have the option to switch modes. But as I watched this video, the CVT version actually has manual mode which is interesting. Are there pedals on the left and right of the steering wheel to shift up and down? Even without a clutch, is it still more engaging to drive compared to a full automatic CVT?
SergeTheBlerge the CVT in the XSE is great though. i was bummed that this trim doesn’t come in a manual, but i learned that it definitely isn’t (and shouldn’t) be a deal breaker for such a beautiful car
Back of the sedan looks waaaaay better then the rear of the hatchback(plus nooo 🙅🏾♂️ fake vennts) But to me the front of both are evenly matched. I like both of the front bumper stylings.
