Review and History of my 300 H&H Magnum, American Enfield, Model 1917. Part 1 

Hey Dave, Thanks for showing us your beautiful rifle as well as the information on the cartridge in general. I have a pre 64 Winchester M70 (1953) 300 H&H that I inherited from my grandfather about 10 years ago. He bought it new and hunted every deer and elk season he could draw tags for, Its a little worse for wear cosmetically but still shoots very well. It's my most prized possession and I wouldn't sell it for anything!

You can load the 300 H&H 180 grain bullet to 3,000 ft per second my 300 Weatherby chronographed is only 150 ft per second more with a 24 inch barrel the 300 H&H is an efficient cartridge.

I was fortunate to purchase an Browning Xbolt in 300 H&H with iron sights. The rifle cost only $799 brand new. The gun shop couldn’t move it because for some the ammunition was expensive. Not if you’re a reloader. The brass was easy to obtain and the cartridge is a accuracy joy.

I've also been told by gunsmith that the Eddystone Arsenal 1917 actions were brittle but I believe you have to go by the serial number

What other cartridge can I shoot from my 70 300 H & H besides the factory cartridge ?

The 300 H&H, IMO, should have the better accuracy, due to the longer neck, giving the bullet more stability at firing? Eddystone rifles are awesome rifles in 30.06, but I've never had the opportunity to shoot one in magnum.

I've been told by gunsmiths the Remington 30s COMMERCIAL action was one of the strongest ever built. Weatherby built some of their rifles due to the strength of the actions. He also heat treated them.

Excellent! I live in Alaska and shoot a .270 and 300 H & H Remington 700. For the 300 H &H I reload Barnes TTSX 180gr with IMR 4831. Factory ammo is pretty expensive in Alaska >$75 for 300 H &H 180gr accubonds, so I reload instead.

Can I change my 300 H H to 300 barrel ??

I have a Winchester model 70 300 H&H made in 1955 and I love it, wouldnt trade it for anything, I just wish factory ammo was not so damn exspensive for it

Ill half to say that is one sexy rifle and one of the best cartridges ever designed.the 300 hh is definitely the original 30 caliber magnum and was used to win the 1925 Wimbledon cup by Mike comfort chambered in a remington 30 s action.I think what ultimately retired the 300 hh is the requirement for a magnum action and Winchester saw a opportunity to release entire family of cartridges 264,300,338 and 458 to function in a standard action.

I hunt and hand load 2 cartridges up here in Alaska and they have the same trajectory: 3 inches high at 100 yards, 3 inches low at 300 yards: 270 Win 130gr TTSX, 300 H & H 180grTTSX.

Excellent sporter, I am a big fan of the WW2 rifles both the ones in their original configuration, and the ones that were modified like yours. Your rifle would be ideal for open country or big game.
