The same model of guitar makes a very importance appearance in "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs". Cool, clear water....

So all that was needed was to take the starting height ie 2.75 mm and subtract the desired height ie 2.25mm which gives a difference of 0.5mm at the 12th fret. To find how much is needed to come off the saddle we double the difference ie 0.5mm to give 1.0mm to come off the bottom of the saddle.

Way back in 1983ish I bought a white wood no brand "Cowboy" guitar from a yard sale... Believe it or not, it started downpouring gallons of water on the way back to my car and the guitar inevitably got wet. By the time I got home, the glue was starting to fail.. When I got this guitar it was soo freakin' out of the box perfect it was astounding! Like it walked right out of 1940 to my hands. Later that same day the top split and not only that it came off the sides in places and warped horribly like an ocean wave... just by getting drenched for a few minutes. I did dry it with a towel as soon and as thoroughly as I could, but that 40 year old white wood was like a thirsty sponge... CUT TO a year ago, I bought a dirty 30's and like you I was completely astounded. It's loud, it STAYS in tune for days on end and believe my even one cent bothers me. A bit after I got this wonderfully playing guitar, the neck... changed and I got string buzz, cranked the truss rod, every OK... a bit later more string buzz (always on the 12th. Fret, not the day of the month!). OK I can deal with the neck and I know some people are gonna be like "what do you care about the 12th fret on a parlor guitar anyway, you're using it wrong" I say shut up!! my guitar I play just the way I feel!. here's the thing that is hurting me the most. The BRIDGE has started to pull forward, causing a pregnancy below the bridge and of course messing with the intonation (which was amazing when I first got it). Bottom line, I called and spoke with the King people and they said , hey we will replace it, you pay the shipping.. so with that shipping money, I have to decide whether or not to just go to the local guitar shop and buy another white wood guitar, or stop at a yard sale on the way.

Honest to frig I’ve been messing around with setups for ever and I wish I had seen this video years ago. The only thing I do a little differently is when sanding down the saddle I put the sandpaper on top of a piece of plexiglass just to make sure that surface is perfectly flat. This video or one like it, just as practical would definitely help a lot of people. Thanks once again for your knowledge and wisdom !

If you put a capo on the third or fourth fret before detuning to take out the pegs, the strings will stay in line and not come unwrapped from the tuners. I'd put a blanket or something on the table, too. Those RK guitars sound terrific- nice instruments for the cost. 👍

The better tone that comes from lowering the action is because when the saddle is too tall it can lean to either the neck or the block and you don't get good flat contact to the bottom of the slot in the bridge.

Just bought a left-handed one of these from Thomann in Germany for £110. Filed the fret ends myself, oiled the fretboard, polished the frets, swapped the terrible strings for Ernie Ball Regular Slinkys and tightened the truss rod 1/4 turn. It now sounds and plays beautifully, not nearly so harsh as I was expecting, sweet '30s jazz tone if you don't hit it too hard, Totally delighted with it: have now prettified it by staining the fretboard darker and adding tiny tortoise pickguard.

This is almost exactly how I set up one of my guitars not long. It's a Taylor and the action was a bit high for my taste...I made a line with my straight edge, with a pencil, and holding it flat and steady, I sanded it down. I only go in one direction, slowly, and being a scaredy cat, it takes a little longer, but it was worth it to be sure...Anyway, now it plays like a dream, and believe it or not, I believe it sounds better. Maybe I'm imagining it, but playing it better makes it sound better. LOL...I still have more saddle that I could sand, but no way. Its perfect. Excellent video that will really help folks.

Dang just something special about a Recording King , especially the dirty 30 ''s.... I got to play some of the antique Originals back in the 80s but I hardly ever see any more.... I missed an opportunity to get a real delta blues Recording King resonator completely covered in patina back then at a farm auction , but it still brought good money for those days. The new dirty 30 resonator I'm going to do my homework before I tamper with it too much

I sand my saddles down more or less the same way, though I finish off the last few strokes against a squared block to clean up any minor degree of skew I may have put in the saddle's underside.

Funny thing here, you made the comment about the strings not being Elixirs, my daughter said the same thing when she played it, it just made me laugh. The day after I got it I took it to a buddy who is a touring musician and he loved it. He couldn't believe it was an all laminate guitar. I'm going to have fun with it.

Really enjoyed watching you tweak this guitar. I was told that the 12th fret being halfway between the saddle and the nut, the saddle has to be reduced in height exactly twice as much as the amount you want to lower the string. So you can measure it exactly if your eyesight is up to it and your sharpie is sharp enough.

I just recently came across your channel, and I love your playing and skill. But one thing I really love is that you are not a guitar snob. You are not afraid to give credit where credit is due. I appreciate that you give credit to the fact that some Chinese guitar makers are making excellent instruments that sound just as good, and in some cases, better than the American counterparts. I especially like your sound comparisons between the Recoding King and the Martin D-28. My son in law is a very skilled guitar player mainly Bluegrass and Travis picking. He bought a used Martin D-28 for 3 grand and I later sold him my Blueridge BR160 for 400 bucks. He actually reaches for the Blueridge far more than the Martin. The Blueridge has remarkable tone and power. Power that projects across large rooms without amplification. I miss that Blueridge, but now own a Recording King RD 227. It is a wonderful guitar that I bought for an affordable 500 bucks. Keep up the good videos and especially the set up tricks and tips.

Hi J.P. that was an interesting video. I was going to ask you if lowering the saddle changes the tone of the guitar, but you answered that already. Because the strings were set so high, does that mean that's the players preference or it made it difficult to play because the saddle was built to high. Sounds great and such a beautiful tone.Thank you for sharing your video. I got a kick out of reading your T-shirt.

Wow cool video! You are obviously so experienced... But how on earth does a regular human decide the ratio of bone height to the truss rod (relief) etc. Lower the bone too much, more relief... etc. Quite the formula to figure out! Crazy stuff... just bought one of these second hand and not receiving it for about a month - this video is probably going to come in handy 🙂 Keep pickin' friend!

What are your thoughts on laminated tops John? I think they DO open up but it just takes longer....Ive even read though somewhere that they get worse over time! ?? Not sure about that one...
@joq702
@joq702 3 года назад
Drier older wood, even if a laminate will be freer to vibrate the string frequencies from playing, bouncing and projecting louder through the slightly more opened drier grain. It should sound louder over time. What critics of laminates could ALSO be referring to though is the overall precision and mechanics of the cheaper builds, meaning the non-precise placements, heights, and materials of the bridge, nut, saddle, neck, woods are magnified over time. If the precision was bad in the initial build, years later, as it dries out, the sound is projected, louder, and will project and magnify the nasty intonation, the cheaper quality measurements, nuts, saddles, bridge placement. New strings cannot overcome poor intonation issues. Precision is necessary on day 1 of the build. I experienced that with a cheap Harmony Stella. Stellas, to me, have a nasty intonation to begin with and it got worse (the intonation). I really think it was more the non-precise set-up from day 1 (the build) not as much the wood (which for my Stella was a solid beechwood).

Note: before you start grinding away on the saddle you might want to ensure neck relief is where you want it, that's a matter of playing style and preference. Should you decide that the saddle is too high then measure the string at 12th fret for both the low E and high E and make calculations for material removal accordingly. Just a tip.

a decrease in the height of the saddle by 1(arbitrary length unit) will decrease the action at the 12th fret by 1/2. You can check it by drawing a right triangle where the hypotenuse is the string after the adjustment and the longer of the two legs is the string before the adjustment.
