Lots of you asked us to do a `review` of mass produced arrows from China (its not just China producing these items, but they are the ones that appear most when doing a search on eBay etc) to see if these VERY cheap items are worth the money?!

Hi. Quality costs so do not waste your money on cheap imports. I bought a quality set of Mathced Arrows from Richard head Longbows and they are amazing. If cared for they will last a fair while. Great videos and true craftsmanship. Let's keep these true artisans going and buy homemade products of quality. Regards, Matt Earl.

I bought 3 arrows many years ago from Richard Head Longbows and the arrows actually out lived my bow . I think the bow lasted 9 years so yes alittle extra cost gets you a great quality product.

i am guilty of being cheap. stupid to. just now i'm shooting home made wood port orford cedar tapered shafts from 11/32 to 5/16. i use 5.5 in. feathers. white. i paint my arrows white with white nock. i use urethane between the feathers applied with a q tip. white is hard to lose in the woods. i think even chinese arrows are better than most beginners can shoot. i find china has no quality control. we can get 23/64th tapers also from usa and that is big enough a guy could make a barreled shaft. may try. the old archers like horace ford thought highly of barreled shafts. i enjoy your shows. all the best. everything i see you make is EXCELLENT quality. thank yew gary

I have truly missed both of you, Richard and Philip! I love the camaraderie, and the fact that each of you are honest in your abilities, and offer we the public such fine tutelage, when it comes to all things a bowyer might encounter. Please continue your teachings, they are always more than enjoyable. Take care lads!!😊🍃

That's very kind of you, when we get time we are able to make some videos, as we aren't get a high viewership we are unable to get the financial help from views that we would need, so we are having to take a step back from regular videos, we are trying our best and are very lucky to have dedicated followers who have amazingly donated via our donate button, this has allowed us to film a several part series of making a triple laminate bow, up to part 2 at the moment. We may have to do some unboxings and review videos to get some revenue in. Thanks again for the support and kind words.

As with any shooting sport, it is a truth that you should always buy the best ammunition available. One of our members highlighted the reason for this. She said she always bought the cheapest arrows available, because she would "often lose arrows". As an EFAA National Longbow Instructor, my response was that I'd also keep losing arrows if they were of poor quality. My arrows are expensive, but they go where I aim them, so I don't lose arrows. You should also consider why you're in a sport that's all about accuracy if you're not shooting good ammunition. Good shooting everyone. Rick

@@longbows I should also add that while we mostly talk about the bow we shoot, archery is really more about our arrows. The bow is simply a "launching mechanism" for our arrows and, inevitably, each of our hand-made arrows will fly slightly differently. As archers, we need to get to know the behaviour of each arrow in our set, and it's useful to label them (I use black bands just below the fletchings) so we know what micro adjustments to allow when launching each arrow. This is why consistency is paramount in selecting a set of arrows. I'd usually make (or buy) around 50-100 arrows. Shoot them at a target and see which arrows consistency group together. That'll establish several sets of arrows. I can then resell those arrows that don't work so well with my Longbow, recouping my investment and giving other archers the opportunity to buy matched sets that work well with their bows. Rick

There are some decent low-cost tips for whoever made these arrows in this video. I have to assume they make enough arrows that they could start matching spine ratings together and giving their customers an option on the checkout. And fixing the notch does not need to cost anything. They could even start to batch the grain weights for only a few seconds of cheap labor weighing the arrows and sorting them. I don't think any lifelong craftsman is going to be outdone by factory workers, but they can certainly make some small improvements based on this man's insights.

Great video. I bought several dozen arrows from China to sell to people who are thinking of getting into archery or just want to shoot for fun - definitely not for competition of any kind. I was able to order them in 5 pound increments of spine weight and out of each dozen there were too many that were unacceptably out of that range (for example, a 42 spine out of a 30-35 spine order). Pretty arrows, but yeah, not much in quality control as far as being duplicates of each other. Oh, several had the binding covering the depth of the self nock also. They had better points but yes, you get what you pay for.

Hello Richard and Philip, Your absolutely right. I bought a cheap set of Chinese arrows to do field shooting, so if I lost one or two it wasn't no big deal. However, like yours there spines were all over the place, there weight also didn't match from one arrow to the next. So to keep myself busy and to see if I could make a silk purse out of a pigs ear I set too. I ended up with 12 arrows relatively all in the same ball park that shot well, but if it wasn't for the curiosity of the task it's far better paying the extra for a good set in the first place. Anyway, enjoyed the video. Happy New Year to you both.

Honestly, I do have a few sets of the cheap Chinese arrows. They're all set aside with my cheap homemade bamboo arrows for my loaner bows. If I'm introducing a new friend to archery, where they're going to be hitting the metal supports holding the targets at my local range, I'd just prefer they do it with the cheap arrows. I'd love to order from you some day, but at the moment shipping to the usa is just... difficult at the moment. Best of hope for the new year, and looking forward to your continued success. Your channel helped inspire me for my own bow making, and I've had a few good successes this year, including my first "Odysseys" Gemsbok horn bow.

This video made me love you guys lol, we have the same subsidy problem with China mailing here in the U.S.A., I assumed it was just a problem here because of the globalist politicians we have. Also assumed you English folks wouldn’t tolerate it from your politicians because you’ve always understood trading policies much better than the rest of us (laws you had about not letting any of your colonies produce finished products, everyone had to ship raw materials to England and buy the finished product from England). Guess none of us have any real control over our overlords nowadays.
@longbows

Thanks glad you like it, not that I am particularly fond of political conversations, it's China who subsidise the shipping, so not really something we (Britain) can do anything about, we can't stop China creating a free Postal service...in the UK we have free health care.

Thank you for doing this! I was thinking about ordering some cheap arrows myself for testing. I am glad you did that i do not have to. But somehow I feel sad about that because the chinese have a great archery tradition and history and sell such a... well you know. I also find it quite dangerous because I broke some arrows since I started archery almost 20 years ago and luckyly only 3 so far broke while leaving the bow after release. One of them because it was spined too weak. Also you can shoot a well crafted arrow from a carp bow but the other way arround does not work that well... I wish you guys a Happy New Year!
@longbows
@longbows 2 года назад
Yes indeed, though the video is about the Chinese as such, that just happens to be where the cheap mass produced arrows came from, many other countries are producing them and frankly all cultures round the world have archery in their past and present so are capable of making good quality arrows. I would hate for people to think the video is about the Chinese, it's really about mass production of an inferior product.

When I started selling arrows on ebay about twenty years ago the Archery section was about five pages long. This included everything archery. No specific sections for bows, arrows quivers etc. I'd say now about 80/90% of Archery tackle especially arrows listed on ebay are from China.

I and most of my household use arrows from China. Why? well they are cheap, our group shooting means we get a noticeable arrow strikes. Here in NZ getting good arrows is not easy, almost all that are sold are in fact Chinese, even if they carry an American name. I used to import from either the UK or Australia but the cost of postage is what stopped me doing that. I was in the UK in 2007 and brought arrows back with me but those surviving arrows are now well past their best. So, I'd love some Head arrows, but that would have to wait for me to get back to Blighty and, even then, only if I can collect rather than get the arrows posted.
@longbows
@longbows 2 года назад
Indeed, as we mentioned in the video, the subsidised postal system makes it impossible for us to compete, ho hum, maybe one day the UK will catch up.

Thank you for this video, which effectively points out what one must look out for when purchasing arrows. I do believe China has some excellent bowyers and fletchers, who hand-make brilliant bows and arrows, just like any other country with a rich tradition of archery. It should not be deemed that all" Chinese arrows" are cheap and bad, that's just the bane of mass production (true for other countries as well). Irrespective of the country buy your archery requirements from local craftspeople, keep the tradition and the artists alive. Cheers.
@longbows
@longbows 2 года назад
Indeed, as we pointed out, they were the cheapest and what appeared first on a search, had they been from Pakistan or any other country then we would have been reviewing those. All cultures have a history of archery, this video is not about Chinese culture, it's about mass produced items that are very cheap, we are NOT bashing the country or its people.

The fact that they are made in China tells you all you need to know. Quality wood shafts will last as long as carbon shafts. I make my own wood shafts and I get quality parts. I can say if my pocket book was bigger I certainly would buy from the better makers.

This is a very useful video for me as a beginner. I recently bought some nice arrows from TandB archery (sorry guys) but I was thinking of getting some cheaper ones that I don't feel quite so precious about. You say a set of 6 is about 45 quid from you guys. I was taking a look on your site but I don't see any listings for 6 arrows. Would you be able to point me in the right direction for that. Also I see you have a "build your own medieval arrow kit". I love that and might grab one of those so I can have a go myself.

6 weeks is quite long for stuff from China. I've bought a fair amount over the years. they do sell spare points & feathers. Just good "Ammunition". I particularly like their bamboo arrows. It is a scandal how cheaply they're able to ship compared with even what it costs to post stuff within the UK. One day we may regret very dearly feeding the Chinese war machine!

Its allways best to buy the originals, copys is never better than a copy. Its really unfair, that the Chinese companies could send this without paying the same as everybody else. My Arrows I buy from shops in Europe, and Bamboo arrows from Texas(USA), I never buy from E-bay or Amazon.

A bit like comparing a Rolls Royce to a fiat 500…. I’d imagine most of your customers know the difference, and wouldn’t be ordering poor quality pieces You guys don’t need to compare the quality of your workmanship to others, just crack on with videos showcasing your craft.
@longbows
@longbows 2 года назад
The fiat 500 does the intended job well and to a standard. Indeed, our customers would know the difference, as mentioned, we aimed the video at newcomers to the sport who don't already own any equipment. We aren't concerned about comparing our equipment to other, again, as mentioned in the video we have never done this before, it's a service to alert people to the potential pitfalls of buying very cheap equipment.
