REVIEW: Holbein Artists' Gouache Iridori Summer Set of 12 Tubes!
Before the review portion begins, I'll talk a little bit about what gouache is, some differences between student and professional grade, how to best use it, why I went for the Holbein brand, and a little bit about Casein.

Your art is lovely. I own this set too, just love it. It has the most lightfast pigments** of any of the Irodori sets, even more lightfast than their regular set of 12. **...since you mentioned it...."Artist" gouache is a marketing term, not the mythical indicator of lightfastness that people claim. I've heard "Designer" versus "Artist" gouache differentiated, disappointingly, even in published in books, but lightfast testing shows that the pigment is the important thing, not the manufacturer designation. Holbein "artist" gouache is only as lightfast as the pigments used per tube. Holbein even uses some fluorescent pigments in their "artist" gouache and those paints have just as poor of lightfastness as any paint that uses fluorescent pigments. They also use Naphthol pigments and some fugitive yellows as well. The Irodori Autumn set has quite a few fugitive pigments, unfortunately. I haven't looked too much at the other seasons. Anyway, every time I hear someone talking about the Artist vs Designer designation, I find myself compulsively correcting them. My apologies for my compulsiveness, ha.

Hi ArtBrain! Thank you so much and I’m happy you enjoyed this video. 🤠 Thanks, too, for your informative comment about Designer vs. Artist’s Gouache. I appreciate your contribution, and no apology needed ❤️ Fugitive pigments, hues, or pigment combinations rather than pure pigments seem to be more prevalent in designer gouache. They tend to be not as finely ground as artist’s gouache and can dry with a more chalky texture. You are correct-lightfastness is a direct factor related to the pigments used. I have found that designers gouache seems to lack lightfastness ratings. That is based purely on my experience, so there is certainly the possibility that’s among all of the gouaches made in the world, my viewpoint may not be true. I don’t have the time or the money to prove or disprove that LOL! I think any artist would be prudent to protect their gouache creation they plan to hang with some sort of UV fixative, use museum glass in the frame, and hang out of direct light. Thank you for adding your wisdom to this thread! ❤️

I like how - in the beginning - you demonstrated and compared different kinds of gouache. I haven't tried those brands, so it was enlightening. Really enjoyed the swatching portion - you give so much useful info. I hadn't thought about the granulation angle before, but what you said makes sense to me. Loved hearing your 'Sleeping Beauty' story. That's a favorite of mine, too.

❤️❤️ Thanks, Irene. Gouache is magical in a way watercolor just cannot be. And vice versa! So happy you enjoyed this.

Great review! I always enjoy your videos. I have recently graduated to professional gouache and after much research, I decided on Holbein artist gouache. My goodness, what a difference from my student grade paints. It was fun to see your selection. Happy painting!

I really love when a review is more than swatching. I enjoy watching artists create in their style with a new product. I use Winsor & Newton Gouache because that was the first one I tried. I've used it in many ways, especially in my BUJO for a year of florals.

Hey Erica! Thanks so much ❤️ Winsor & Newton is a GREAT company-I happened to land on Holbein & am happy so far. Is there any one color/pigment you like over the others in their line? Maybe a comparison video is in order! Oh wow I bet a year of florals in your bullet journal is really gorgeous! Happy painting!

@@artonthecreek Like you, I just landed on W&N. I think I have deciphered their lightfast rating (though it isn't an issue for me). I have three primaries and white and eleven more I picked up along the way. I'd say my fav of what I have is perylene violet-PV29 and yellow ochre-PY42. I find them creamy and opaque and mix with watercolor so, no pallet limitations.

Wonderful! Thank you so much I will compare the pigments & see what’s to come in the rest of these iridori sets. In watercolor I have a PV29 Qor Rose of Ultramarine…exceedingly pale but that’s not a negative. Must be lovely in a gouache. I have an abundance of Yellow Ochres…I have a weakness for that rich, beautiful yellow. I really hope I have that one in Gouache!! (Honestly they would be lovely together in a floral painting!)

I was very interested to see the casein paint - that's something I've heard of but never seen in action before. I'd love to see a video about them.
