it was the older cars that created the tuner scene and its the older cars that still dominate the scene. Of course the older cars are more exciting. They pretty much caused the entire scene.

Very comprehensive. Great review. I've never been super enamoured with these, but I respect them greatly. A colleague of mine had a student on the track that owned one of these and he commented that it felt much heavier, and and less playful than it was hyped up to be. But even with some of the quirks you mentioned, I would still be happy to own one. As you said, everything is too electronic nowadays.

First off, thanks for the nicely rounded and professionally produced video on this great car! Second - Okay, did you really just say you'd take a 370Z over this? I actually have BOTH CARS (1992 GT-R and 2017 370Z NISMO) in my garage right now (long story). I even did a track event at VIR with the Z, but still prefer the overall drive of the R32 (but will never track it - as fun as that would be!). Its more refined, quieter, smoother and as you noted, more "mechanical" in its overall feel... and you can actually SEE out of it. And the R32's steering feel, to me, is like buttuh. Sure, the 370-Z is more modern, has great brakes and a nice, crisp-shifting, close-ratio 6-speed gearbox, but it's V6 is raspy and the interior ungodly loud under full power (cool, if you like that kinda thing), and despite the NISMO Z's fantastic looks and awesome handling characteristics, I still prefer the overall FEEL and driving experience of my R32. Third (and FYI): Nissan has a new HERITAGE PARTS PROGRAM that should help make getting NEW parts easier for all the Skylines (including GT-R's) being bought, sold, and restored all over the globe. Fourth: "Importing one for 20-something". Had to check the date of this review, as any R32 you can buy today that's under 30k is gonna look, at best, like this one inside and underneath - probably some rust too. I've looked, shopped, and know the current market on these. For comparison, mine is somewhat rare in its almost-concourse grade condition, and was a relative steal at just under $40k. I'd surmise it's probably too late to find anything better than a fair-to-good specimen for anything less than a "It's rare and collectible, so pay-up" price. Expect to pay $30,000+ for one with only a few flaws; More for anything in 'good' condition and better. Sky is the limit! Some auctions have seen all-original, top grade R32 GT-R's into the $80,000 range! Lastly: WTH at 3:45? Had to LMAO that you narrated from behind the wheel (right side), then hopped out of the left side of the car in the next frame! Bet there's a good story behind that production detail :D Thanks for enduring my absurdly long comment (if savagegeese or anyone else actually did). Love the R32 GT-R, and the Z is very cool too, so HAD to talk about it!
@nunyabusiness896
@nunyabusiness896 6 лет назад
The Z is a boat, the GT86 is a better car if you aren't just evaluating it with a stopwatch. I drove my friend's 350z years back (still fairly new, not worn out) and I just didn't like it at all. Numb, heavy, and I guess decent in a straight line but not engaging or thrilling at all, you wouldn't know if you were in a sports car or a bus. I can't wait to give the Skyline a try, though, and will be driving one in the coming months when I go to Japan. You should really try a GT86, though, it has that 90's connected feel that hardly anything has anymore.

@@nunyabusiness896 I have an R32 AND an FR-S (son's car). Yes, the GT86 has an amazingly similar, simple and excellent feel to it. If my son ever sells his, I swear I may buy it. Not real fast but doesn't matter - the fantastic chassis and overall feel and handling; The simplicity of controls and connection to the road is amazing for a 2010's car. Bleeding the attesa system is critical to its operation, almost everyone who puts a new clutch in a gtr/gts4 does not bleed the attesa system, it’s super simple and changes the response of the system incredibly. Upon launching the car hard the torque split gauge should whip up to around 50%, not slowly and sluggishly move up the gauge face partially, not sure how hard you got the throttle early on, but it seemed to move pretty poorly.

I have owned 6 skylines and currently own a 650hp R33 GTR. I’ve seen and driven numerous GTR’ as my friends own 32’s 33’s 34’s and 35’s. And whilst I note you appreciation generally I think you really undersell the durability, performance and technological marvel that the GTR represents. At 9:30 where you said you’d remove the Attessa 4wd I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. It’s such a robust system I’ve not known anyone to have a failure (they happen but it’s rare) and they handle 1000hp. Sure a number lock out the HICAS but there are reasons for that on track on the open road it’s not so necessary. Also I think if you researched how it works you will understand what it seems to turn in late. I could make a joke here about yanks not understanding cornering but I’ll resist. I get you’re saying that the GTR is all about driving but you need to remember that there was no Bluetooth no iPhone no traction control no active stability control. The 4wd system was so advanced and the notion of providing all those gauges so novel. Also the power output was well above advertised... Anyway enough ranting. Suffice to say my 20year old GTR is faster than most new metal and on a track more so.

Being an Aussie and having these here for a long time I can tell you this, there is no way on God's green earth you could enjoy 30% of this vehicle without being locked behind bars within 1 hour. Like you said, yes the 370Z might seem faster/better etc. up to 7/10's then the GTR takes over and you do need to have the balls to drive it to 10/10, when you do you just have to pinch yourself that such 80's machinery can still scare the living daylights out of you. New cars are all about 5/10, they are phenomenal at that level, once you start pushing past that their shortcomings really show up quickly where the R32/R33 GTR is the opposite, it comes alive from loosing license territory to doing time in jail, horses for courses

The STI is mental around corners, the M2 is not. The M2 will loose the rear end and make. you smile, more it will be in between grip and loose and if you hold it there it will take you from 0 to 60 (not breaking limits here) on that wave there and not there traction and make you giggle without breaking any limits and acting like an idiot on the road. The mileage isn't fake, it's just not an original cluster. This one was swapped long before it went to auction in Japan and was purchased with the knowledge that the miles were not original. Yeah, what Art Vandelay said - or they just wind them back. I've owned a lot of Japanese imports over the years, cheap and not so cheap, and I doubt any one of them hasn't had the mileage tampered with to some extent. I once owned a Mazda Presso that claimed it had done 46,000km, but every touchable surface in it was worn and shiney from use, plus the water pump was leaking like it had done at least 3 times that - which I suspect was close to the truth. It was cheap regardless so I didn't really care. Imported a Soarer once that was supposed to have 60,000km on the clock "certified" mileage - when it arrived it was clear it had done more like 100,000 - even though that was a fairly expensive car at the time, it wasn't economic to bother trying to get compensation.

Enjoyed this. These are bonafide modern classics now. However the idea of taking a 370Z over an R32 GTR is inconceivable where I live. This car dominated Group A touring car racing here and in Japan like no other car of its time, and as a result is etched into motorsport folklore. This car is a legend. It's hugely handy and it amazes me after 15 years of ownership to see when the system is (trying to ) transfer power. Great review. On the subject of parts, it's *relatively* easy to get parts for a R32, if you don't mind buying them online. The Skyline has a huge following, so there's a lot of OEM and aftermarket parts available from all around the planet. There are harder vehicles to find specific parts for. And I should know, I own a 99 Stagea RS4-S.
@gazman9468
@gazman9468 6 лет назад
Yeah was gonna say I'm not sure I agree with SG's suggestion that a 370z with a few mods would annihilate an R32. This example clearly needed a bit of maintenance work before it would even be ready for mods. Also - fellow Stagea owner (M35)!
@mrsabidji
@mrsabidji 6 лет назад
A modified 370z sure would beat a stock R32 GTR. But then, you can mod the R32, and while the ATTESA might not be the most refined AWD setup by modern standards, it does get the power to the ground better than a RWD. M35 can't be much easier to find parts for than the WGNC34, I imagine. :) Maybe you can get parts from other Nissan/Renault models of the same era, I haven't done much research on the subject. :P At least with the RS4-S, I can get R33 GTR, R34 GT-T and R34 GTR parts. Just have to know which ones to pick. I can get some misc. Altima/ Laurel parts to fit, too. Again, just have to find the right info.

Gtr drag challenge here in Australia says no. No. NO. No way in hell a 370 would know where a modified gtr went in a drag race. Sub 10 quarters aren’t particularly difficult in a gtr. Costly yes, but not hard. And I’m still talking manual

The problem with these cars is you can get ALL the pro's with NONE of the con's (other than obviously being dated) from a used $800 late-80's Mustang 5.0 if you just want a fun 30-year old simple mechanical toy. With a tubular K-member, reinforcement rails and rear-end suspension upgrades, the solid axle of the older Mustang doesn't get in the way much (but will obviously lack handling compared to any IRS RWD vehicle) but the simplicity is part of the fun, it saves a ton of weight, and you will never have wheel hop when launching.

Being an owner of a '93 GTR, I couldn't help but have a reaction of "what?!" on a lot of your criticisms. You keep comparing it to modern sports cars and say that it falls short on things that it's not equipped with. However, performance-wise and for driver experience, it far exceeds them...and that's me comparing it to my G37S coupe. Maybe I'm just being a fanboi though.

How is the torque gauge a gimmick or silly? As far as I've ever understood, it was mandatory as per Group A Homologation Sales Regulations (you do know the only reason the GT-R was brought back was to enter Group A and Group N right? They didn't expect them to sell that well). And a 370z with mods annihilating a BNR32? Unless those mods are turbos all you're going to be doing is trying to get it to be as fast as a bone stock BNR32. Factory 370z 1/4: Best you're gonna get is a mid-13. Factory BNR32 test in 1989: 12.7 seconds with road tyre technology of that time. And you wanna talk modified? Basic alterations to BNR32, and you are in the 11's. Wanna go nuts? There are street registered R32's in Australia that run 8's. And comparing the handling of a properly sorted R32 to a built 370z isn't even worth the pressing of the keys on my keyboard.
@danmurphy1994
@danmurphy1994 5 лет назад
Torque gauge is the opposite of silly no offence but in a turbocharged AWD car that is reverred for its' ability to rotate on throttle having a simple Torque gauge is EXTREMELY helpful. Yes you can memorize the RPM range where peak torque happens and where peak power fades (if applicable) but that is somewhat imprecise compared to a dedicated gauge. Knowing EXACTLY which part of the rev range your skyline will rotate in a corner when you use throttle at a quick glance is a luxury If you enjoy pushing your car in the corners. Also it's an old school turbocharged engine.. it comes into boost rather suddenly and it varies based on the weather slightly, If the engine is in overall working order and it's cold outside, once the engine is heated up and everything you're gonna get more urgency from the turbo, you will probably even make more peak boost due to how much more dense the air is making a torque gauge a genius thing to have for this car.

“Silly torque gauge” Do you even understand what it is measuring??? It measures how much torque is going to the front wheels. They are rwd until the fronts are needed. It’s not an engine power figure. Do some basic research before calling it silly

Beautiful work, I especially loved the part where you talked about the feeling you get from late 80’s to early 2000’s cars. This is the main reason I’m looking to get rid of my ‘13 M3. It’s too electronic, not enough feel.

Jonathan Mendez do it, you won't regret. I m having the same debate right now. But my car is already Much less electronic feeling and connected than an M3 (it's a 981 GTS), but even then it just leaves me this craving for something just completely connected or something even more back to basics. I'm thinking of a S2000 but the prices on those things... It's Not expensive but idk if I can justify to myself spending that amount for it. Then again, the prices on that thing will likely permanently grow

Sir, this is one professionally done video with great footage and pointers. However, your statement that getting parts for these cars will be long and difficult is wrong. Online stores like NissanRaceShop in CA and Terra Firma in Georgia carry a huge catalog of new OEM parts for this car. Even when ordering parts from Japan via RHDJapan, you will usually have them in your hands within two weeks. So parts for these cars are easy to get.

As a R32 GT-R owner I agree with some of the stuff you said but I think the one you drove must have had knackered rear wheel steering because they're very predictable and not weird feeling as you described. When the rear steering works properly it just makes the car turn in exceptionally well and it makes the car feel smaller and shorter than it is. Unfortunately it does go wrong and most people lock it out and you don't miss it to be honest. The interiors on most R32s wear badly as they have vinyl covered panels rather than the plastic interior panels that the similarly aged S13 had and you seem to be getting some pretty rough ones in the US looking at various reviews. Parts-wise they're actually pretty amazing for a 30 year old car. Most parts are still available for them in Japan. Even new dashboards and seats but parts are expensive. Great handling, nice steering and generally good front end on them. The torque gauge mentioned shows you when the 4wd system is pushing power to the front.

I was just about to add a "hate" comment about your statement at the end "I would just buy a used 370z and annihilate this skyline"... and then I remembered the feel... and... You are right. HOWEVER, you drove a STOCK STOCK STOCKEST OF STOCK R32 GTRs. Drive a basic single turbo conversion on some real coilovers and suspension arms with bushings that aren't loosy goosey and you will annihilate the modded 370z, 350z, 300zx TT, over and over and over again on any track. straight line speed, the 300zx TT and this R32 can easily compete with eachother (provided youre using a 3200lb hardtop 2 seater Z and not the Ttop 2+2 that weighs almost 3600lbs) . a boosted and built 350 and 70 will keep up for much more money, car and mods together (debatable with the skyline).

Clutch press start, another absence I appreciate about my car. - It probably exists because people refuse to use the handbrake for parking, a dangerous practice based on the myth of handbrake cables freezing, which I'd say is only still a thing with badly designed cars. As for the Nissan, personally the R32 looks too boring for me. The R34 is my favorite. Regarding the R32: I not only dislike complicated electronics, but also complicated hydraulics. You description of the direct steering and all, the connectedness, I feel the same. It's a step back. Disconnectedness - a symptom of the digital age, on its path to dehumanization and virtualizing our whole life. I am worried that if I ever get my car what it deserves, it might eat so much money to maintain the old stuff. The visibility aspect is very important, too. Cars have started to feel like soft-pillowed bricks you are stuck in - pudgy. Tons of airbags and other stuff crammed into its hull, bloating it. - I got a Corolla E11, so that's the last of the line with the old style. The E12 was the beginning of that heavy style.

Looks like the car's done 200,000km plus! I cant see how you can class the car as 'very tidy for a 30 year old car' when it has holes in the seats, broken vents, heavily uv damaged interior, above average warn rocker cover etc. We've seen many of these cars of all ages and mileage in New Zealand. As honest as this car may be, i wouldn't be surprised if someone swapped the cluster, or someone just took appalling care of the car!

Really nice in-depth video. Nicely put together. I think the biggest plus for a car like this is it's potential. Modern cars typically have everything out of the box. You can do modifications yourself, but you don't typically gain THAT much. The RB26 and 2JZ both have massive over-heads for more power. The gentleman's agreement at the time really choked the performance of these cars - but at the same time almost forced Japanese manufacturers to get more creative and focused on the handling and feel. I've been running a little over 500whp in my R33 GTR for a little over 2 years on a bone stock motor (aftermarket turbos) which shows zero sign of giving up. With a few more changes to the head gasket, potentially the oil pump and sump I've got the possibility of unlocking another 100whp. Forge the bottom end and the sky's the limit. It truly is a testament to how well engineered these motors were. There's plenty of options for aftermarket suspension, geometry, brakes etc. etc. I don't personally think many people buy these older skylines for how they drive in stock guise. They've got the ability to out shine so many modern cars with a few tweaks to bring them up to date.

In 2000 I bought a GTST version and I still have it and I'm not selling in spite of many offers over the years. Here in the UK there are no problems with getting parts even for this model that nobody seems to have heard of! New and used parts are available from many specialist dealers and owners clubs. The only problem I've had with it down the years is that insurance companies refuse to acknowledge this model ever existed, only the GTR appears on their lists which can be a pain. On the whole, it's a great car and it is much easier and cheaper to work on because it is so simple. Mine doesn't even have one of those OBD connector thingies, I can pull the whole thing apart with a toolkit that is no more complicated than the one my dad used to use! Don't be afraid of these things, it's a hoot to drive and it has been totally reliable down the years.

Not my favorite review, this car was all about technical innovation. It blew away all of its rivals, and you talk about disconnecting all those marvels. That’s just crazy, those parts are actually reliable and it makes the R32GTR in to a GTR. Nowadays when modern cars feel so much disconnected while they are actually connected to way too much stuff it becomes more and more clear that we have to respect the past and worship it! Actually when you look at the prices of GTR’s nowadays I really think that my comment was unnecessary…

Hype?? There's no hype actually because it's simple. The GT-R BNR32 set many records and feats in motorsports history. It's winning streak in JGTC in the 90s led to Group A rule book change. In other countries like Australia, sometimes it was banned, sometimes it was given the nickname "Godzilla" by the motoring press because of sheer domination. Heck! Even up to now it's doing 1/4 fastest AWD records... in street radials! And this car is like what, 28 years old?? The Godzilla legend is real folks.
