Wonderful review, this game really deserves all the praise for offering a genuine nostalgic 8/16 bit experience with updated game philosophy and mechanics, much like Shovel Knight. Too bad it has those regrettable oversights and bugs on its console versions, for me it was a 10/10 experience when I played it on pc. As for a favorite old school action adventure game, I'll say Cadash to not repeat the choices of other commenters.
Great review. I'm glad you took the time to talk about the camera bug but still enjoyed the game. It's not without it's issues but full of so much retro charm that I can't help but love it.
I agree with this review wholeheartedly! It also scores big points for me just for all the great Highlander references. :D That is a shame it still has the same camera problems it did on PC, though. I assume you mean side-scrolling action adventure games, therefore I will pick Rastan. It's still the king.
Just bought it for my Xbox One X. Currently on sale on Xbox One Windows Store, £5.99. The controller setup won’t be an issue for me personally, I use an Elite controller. The four paddles on the back of the controller will make this game easier to play, and you can change the controllers on the Elite if you want.
Does look like fun, glitches aside, but also agree with you, better when you can decide your own buttons in these type of games. But let's see, upon guessing by "Old School" it isn't in reference to Undertaker's walking the top rope 😉, I would say Adventure for Atari 2600. Can't get much more old school than that, and remembering on dad's old system, that was the first game I ever beat on my own, so kinda nostalgia memories guess could say.
Agreed about the weird button config, but you can always custom map buttons via the Switch settings itself. Also, the game devs have added an alternate button config via the game now, which is much better than the default config.
Qotd - super castlevania 4. I like that its supposed to be a remake of the first game. I dont know if that is true as I never get far in the original since Simon handles so awkward and stiff. Kudos to super castlevania 4 for being a challenging yet FUN to play game.
Thanks for the review. Game looks great but the button config with no remapping option is very disheartening. Its really hard to get used to a wierd configuration like that. And once you do, you're all screwed up for the next platformer you play with "normal" button mapping. Gotta wait for play-asia to ship the physical version of this and Oniken, but looking forward to playing them nevertheless.
The button mapping is a deal breaker for me, since I have the game on Steam already. As for the question on adventure games, Cadash comes to mind since I played that recently and enjoyed it a lot. Don't think I have an all-time favorite.
Xbox One you can change the controls, if you have the Elite controller. This is what I have, and the four under paddles on the controller make the game a lot easier to play. Sony just released a controller attachment that has two additional paddles and these can be customised.
Is the hard mode available from the start this time? I played this on PC when it was released a few years ago and although I enjoyed the game, I found it a little too easy.
I saw this on a list that said it was a metroidvania.....is that true I heard you say you can go back to other levels but is that necessary or for pointless type items
Metroidvania? No way! There are branching paths in some of the levels, but this is very much a throwback to the original Castlevania trilogy. There's a (mostly) linear level with a boss at the end. Then you go to another (mostly) linear level with a boss at the end. Rinse, repeat. You can find alternate paths out of the level that lead to different parts of the world map, but I wouldn't call it a Metroidvania game. I the person who made that list is a little confused on the definition of Metroidvania.
And you're right, this IS a better game than Oniken (to me at least).. Though Oniken was still awesome! But in that game that hitbox was terrible lol.. But as I'm streaming this game right now at the moment, I have to say, this game is a BIG improvement!!
Is this a-button to jump on nintendo switch still a thing? I don't like it - I even map smash bros to have a b-jump a y-attack. Why on earth would a be jump? Anyone know if this issue has been patched?
Honestly, the glitches in the switch version right now kind of ruin the experience for me and makes me wish I didn't just blindly buy this game. As consumers we shouldn't just accept a game this buggy just because the pc version is good or because the game would be better without these glitches. I mean, there is a glitch making a boss near unbeatable, if that's not a deal breaker, I don't know what is! xD
I haven't played the PC version, but from other comments left on this review, it seems like some of them are the same on both platforms. That's a shame, but the developer has promised a patch that will hopefully address most (if not all) of the bugs. I agree with you that games shouldn't launch broken. I suspect the boss you're talking about is the one I highlighted, where the screen shakes to a point that may trigger an epileptic seizure. It's a shame those bugs get in the way of an otherwise great adventure.
I must not understand this game.. This is the second review I have seen that gave this game high praise. I bought it and its crap, the controls are not responsive at all! Shovel Knight is responsive, this literally controls like an old nes game n they controlled like shit. Lol. The attack is soo slow and the jump is too. Also controlling this with the switch joystick is terrible and I think it should be mentioned in the review. 👍
There is no way I'm going to pay $20 For 2 games that are very Similar to it the night got on my system WIIU The Castlevania Circle the moon And Harmony of desistence And I got those 2 together For $16 To get both of them when I can get either one of those 2 for about less than $8 So why would I pay $20 2 games that are just like it I can give for less than $8 This game is a rip off in price you get the old nintendo games For lesser than that game Odallus The Dark calls $20 is a rip off I got Symphony of the night on my cell phone for only $3 so why would I pay $20 for a game that's weaker in technology then Symphony of the night which I only got for 3 bucks on my phone this game you're talking about its price is I rip off
