ill tell you whos an expert with a cane is my old man he beat someone trying to put a mask on him with his stopped the attack they were warned repeatedly and they were awarded for their ignorance with a lump and im proud of my dad for it hes a tough old man but they ganged up on him and tried it and they were fended off by me shoving one or two and he popped one was a good learning experience would highly recommend a cane for defense over a fist if someone is elderly he hit me with one a time or two too hes quick.

I have one, but my Grandpa taught me how to fight with a stockman’s stick. The hook is good for pulling on the ankle! Once you trip them they’re pretty hard to miss! I boil my cane hook in water to bend larger hook then I saw it off blunt like a hammer. The hook is then great for snakes.

Good advice brother, I unfortunately am one of those who require a walking cane these days. I use a 36" hickory cane which could be quite effective.

Looks a bit like a sheleighly! In the 80s we practiced with the riot baton which was about that long. Much more versatile than the 26 inch hickory baton we carried on duty. Strikes to the shin and thigh seemed to be particularly effective. Now back that stick up with a J frame Smith revolver.

I have a collection of walking sticks and canes. I have one of Cold Steel synthetic Walkabouts like you have in the video and two of the older wooden (no longer available) Walkabouts. Sticks and canes for self-defense? They’ve been around for a “long” time and there still here. What’s that tell you?

Thank you Sir, I really enjoyed the presentation, especially the presentation style - I found it very entertaining to watch. If I may offer some constructive criticism especially in regard to potential users more advanced in age: the implement used here is quite heavy at about 800g according to Cold Steel's website, which is close to a baseball bat. That is more than TWICE the weight of historical walking sticks used for fighting, and I would argue there is a good reason for this. Not only does this mean it's physically harder to handle, it also slows down strikes a lot. Not only is speed an important factor in impact energy, it also makes the strikes a lot easier to block. If you compare this to a stick half the weight, you should notice a considerable difference. In fact, the recommend weight of a fighting stick of this length in most styles today is usually 250-400g, 400-500g are already more rare and recommended for advanced and physically strong practitioners. A number of 19th century authors are quite clear about the risks of using too heavy a cane and commonly refer to a decreased speed of single attacks, decreased maneuvrability and slower combinations.
@LionquestFitness
@LionquestFitness 3 года назад
Normally I use a generic wooden cane with a crook end like what is used in Hapkido. For practice I do use the Walkabout occasionally. When I bought it I was under the impression it was slimmer. I did not mention this in the video, but the ball on the end is quite big for using it as a walking stick. It is somewhat unwieldly for that. It is heavier than my regular cane, but I see little difference in speed as far as self defense use between the two. However, as you mentioned, it is not something an elderly or infirmed person could pick up and then practice self-defense with. As I mentioned in the video, at sixty I am practicing stick work for on down the road when I'll need the extra balance point should I live that long. I find though, that if I am on my feet for long periods of time, I the Hapkido cane is quite a help in taking a load off my feet and bad hip.

@@LionquestFitness I totally agree on the usefulness of a cane for various things. For reference: I’m 32, have competed in Freestyle and Greco wrestling on national level until very recently (welterweight and light-heavyweight), and I’ve carried a cane daily for quite some time after extensive knee surgeries. I still take it on longer hikes and when traveling. My personal experience with canes is quite a bit different than yours, though: my heaviest one currently is a Cold Steel City Stick (510 g), and if I compare that to my 325 g blackthorn shillelagh, it almost feels like I can get in two strikes with the blackthorn for one with the CS. Colonel Monstery, a 19th century fencer and author whose system is based on the saber, even wrote “3 to 1” comparing a hickory cane to one made of lignum vitae. In my opinion, the difference is the biggest when changing direction mid-strike, recovering after a missed strike etc. Granted, the ideal weight will depend on the style you use, I do more one-handed work and want to be able to maneuver the cane efficiently from the thin end with either hand if need be. My two cents would be to base a style on what you feel comfortable carrying with you. If using a heavier one in training works for you and gives you a good workout, that’s great and more power to you. That being said, I definitely wouldn’t want to be hit by the walkabout stick; I suppose it’s great for power shots. However, in my opinion, the emphasis being on power, not speed. PS: If you're interested in historical fighting stick weights, I've found this very interesting: irishstick.wordpress.com/2020/10/08/lets-weight-in-how-heavy-a-shillelagh-really-needs-to-be/

Hi Al. Me personally I prefer a curved handled wooden cane. It is more versatile for getting around on times when my back goes out. But, you can still do the same movements as with the Walkabout. You don't have the weight or the knob, but you do have something you can hook an ankle with.

I absolutely LOVE Greg's channel and the content he provides; however, I believe that the VAST majority of people cannot effectively use a cane to protect themselves (even a high quality one, like the Cold Steel Walkabout). In MANY jurisdictions the use of an item like a cane or baton to strike another person may be considered the use of lethal force (and NOT a use of a non-lethal deterrent). Additionally, most people who NEED a cane (though not all) are probably not fit enough to wield it properly. Utilizing a cane like this would seem to require EXTENSIVE training to be effective and avoid having it taken from you and used against you (especially, since you can't run away). Consequently, for many people, believing that you can effectively defend yourself with a cane may be a fallacy: you're just kidding yourself and, perhaps, putting yourself in more danger. I would consider the legal use of pepper spray and a firearm, instead. On the other hand, if you are willing to commit hundreds of hours to proper martial arts (stick fighting) techniques and you have sufficient mobility, it may be a good option (depending upon the laws in your jurisdiction).

Agreed. Go for the easiest 'no miss' bodypart first. A crack to the side of the knee may not be a take down blow, but it will give you time to hit a more disabling part of your attacker. I'd say 80% of unarmed attackers, once they saw something like that cane, wouldn't come into range of it anyway. Even someone with a knife if going to look at that and think that's going to break bone.
