if you want to experience the old Gotthard route, starting December with change of time table, SOB will have trains from Zürich or Basel to Locarno using the old tunnel with Stadler Flirt rolling stock in a long distance configuration.

I travelled first class on one of these trains 3 years ago when it was still routed along the Gotthard Pass - fantastic journey. I think you will find that the problem with the seats comes from the fact that the coach body has to be narrower than normal to allow for the tilting facility.

Dear surveyor, since from the border railway station (Domo d'Ossola, Chiasso etc.) the Swiss international trains are not compulsory reservation and at market price, here is explained to you why they are obliged to identify the place with the appropriate ticket seats possibly booked in advance. Years ago the railway worker was given a specific prescription drawn up on the appropriate form.

Thanks for the kind words about Swiss public transport. I have to agree that the seats on these trains are horrible. Even the older EW/VU 4 coaches are more comforable and offer more space. However, from this year onwards, the plan is to use Stadler's new Giruno trains on this route, which in general are a huge improvement over the current trainsets.
@UpsilonDzeta

I find the seats in these trains more comfy also because they can recline. I usually don't like the seats on other SBB/CFF trains because they are quite hard, unlike those of ETR 610.

@@ferrarisuper The tilting system is not really necessary anymore on the Gotthard line. Most of the mountainous section is now covered by the Gotthard and Ceneri base tunnels. Quite a nice trip report! I like the New Pendolino trains, but I do genuinely wonder what it will be like to take this journey when they're replaced with the Stadler Rail SMILE trains (or as SBB call them, the Giruno trains). The tilt certainly won't be present from what I understand, and I do wonder how that'd affect journey times. But once again, great trip report! Great video, thanks. I'm a lover of Switzerland, the SBB and its trains, but I really dislike the tilting trains - they seem far more cramped than SBB's traditional train carriages, due to the fact that the sides have to be slanted inwards. As you pointed out the legroom is also a problem (my partner is 6' 2" - even in 1st class that was a problem). We did Milan to Basel on the Simplon route in 2014 and, despite the fact we were in first class, by the time we got to Basel I was getting cramps in my legs, back and 'other parts' and was really glad to get off and transfer to 'normal' EC carriages for the short hop from Basel to Colmar where we stayed overnight. Also beware pickpockets and luggage thieves in Milan Central Station - amazing station but we had to stand by our luggage in the end of carriage racks on the train until it departed. Thieves were trying to board the trains and steal the luggage.

That train is the most uncomfortable in the world! I took it many years ago from Geneva to Milan and I was seated at a table like you…it was a nightmare. More than four hours with my legs squeezed between the bin and the pole. I don’t understand what they had in mind when they designed the seats that way. I was hoping that, after ten years, there would have been some improvements, but no sir! I recently travelled on the new Giruno train of the SBB from Milan to Zurich and there STILL was the same problem with the bin. It’s really a disgrace.

Try their 1st class, it’s worth the extra money as it’s very comfortable. * Litt X2, Stockholm-Gothenburg in 1st class when it’s refurbished. * Litt X50-X54, Västtågen or Tåg i Bergslagen in 2nd class. Unique layout compared to literally all other trains. * Litt X55 or SJ 3000 in 1st class, I’m interested in hearing your opinions on that 1st class product. * Litt X74, the competitor to SJ on Stockholm-Gothenburg.

I have traveled many times on this train. The seat pitch is pretty narrow, especially when there is another passenger sitting across to me. Also for the seat without tables in the second class, the ''big'' trash bin is placed in front of seats, which is extremely annoying. SBB is also running Giruno through Gotthard tunnel. This train looks pretty modern inside, lots of functions, however, the seat is not comfortable at all.

Nice idea to show your position in the train in the graphic as you walk through. Otherwise ... I also had that impression of this train or its Italian counterpart: Very small seats. Additionally when I took it in Italy (Frecciargento) some toilets were out of order and others had waiting lines. When it comes to tilting trains I feel better in German class 411/415 (which happens to have the same tilting system). A direct comparison to the other Swiss tilting train (class RABe 500 used inland) would be interesting.

While I agree that the Gothard Base Tunnel is an engineering success story, I disagree that it is a (positive) highlight. The old rail line with its spirals and incomparable scenery was breathtaking. Unless you are a frequent commuter, it'd be like replacing the Golden Gate Bridge with an undersea tunnel. Wonderful video!!!!!

You save two hours on a LOT of trips with that. It's simply an upgrade, even if it's not scenic

Great Video, but there's two big problems I noticed: 1. The caption for Lake Zürich at 13:30 was mostly shown on a view of what looks like Lake Zug with a little bit of Lake Zürich in the end. 2. In Switzerland main stations are called HB and not Hbf like in germany, so it should be Zürich HB at 13:55, not Zürich Hbf.

Could you try Flytoget, between Oslo Central and Oslo Gardermoen Airport? 🙂
