The northeast just received over 2 feet of snow in areas, and here in the Eagles Nest Wilderness area of Colorado, we have had a steady base of snow since early November. Let the winter adventures begin!
One of the tools that allows us to continue to train and run in the deep snow and not posthole are the TSL Symbioz Hyperflex Racing Snowshoes. These are very lightweight, weighing in at a mere 320g per foot and still can support up to 220lbs. With its 4 steel spikes and smart design of the frame, the traction is awesome. When adjusted correctly to your foot size and choice of footwear, it feels very comfortable and natural to run and walk in. This model follows the European and American regulatory standards for competitive snowshoe racing.
While there are many brands of snowshoes out on the market we feel that the TSL’s and MSR line of snowshoes are the two brands that suit our needs the best. We use the MSR Lightning Ascent series when exploring the backcountry, climbing steep terrain or breaking trail. We use the TSL’s when heading out for a run on flat to rolling terrain.
Remember, the primary reasons for wearing snowshoes are so you don’t posthole (a deep hole from your footstep), ruining the experience of the snow packed trail and making travel more dangerous for backcountry skiers and other fellow snowshoers. Also, snowshoes provide more efficient and safer travel, especially in deep snow.
In this video coach Joe Azze is changing the size of the binding to fit my women’s size 7 Salomon Sense Ride gore-tex shoe. You want the binding to fit securely and properly for a more efficient foot strike. We suggest fitting the snowshoe to your gore-tex shoe of choice before you head out to avoid making changes while out on the trail.
During our 8 outings so far using the TSL’s, we found the Salomon Ultra GTX Mid Boot, the Salomon GTX Sense Rides or for single digit days and temps below zero, the Salomon Quest Winter GTX work the best. If you are planning to race in them or looking for a really fast running setup, the MPF RNR team really likes the Salomon S/LAB XA Alpine 2 shoes.

Brilliant review - thanks for sharing. Appreciated the tips on adjusting the fit - didnt realize there were so many options (didnt read the manual yet). My first hike/run in these today was every bit as fun as it looks in your vid. You guys (ben) didn't steer me wrong. Would love to see even more vids on cold winter gear and staying warm and dry.

Glad it was helpful! They are so much fun and feel very natural underfoot. We will keep the videos coming regarding cold weather gear, layering and staying dry, especially for when the fitness demand is high. Keep us posted on how the TSL's work for you, pros and cons.

Hello, I saw your review TSL racing. After dôme reviews, many people propose the TSL step in more adapted to snow. I souls like to replace some running session by snowshoe run session but sometimw the path has 10 or 15 cm of New snow. Thank

I'm new on this weather, so when I moved to northern Michigan, I didn't know about snowshoes and been running with cleats on my shoes but of course, I had no traction at all with at least 10 inches of snow. Asking around some runners mentioned the snowshoes and did a deep research: found this and just got them a week ago. Snow melted down last week, but at least I have them now and have enough time to figure out how to adjust them and to use them. But I have another doubt now that I watched your video: I thing you wear them with hiking boots. The longest I have run with snow boots or hiking boots is a 5K, not sure if I could do 10 miles or more in them. What do you think?

Thanks for the video. I have two questions: 1) are they really unusable on report/fresh snow? 2) Is there an additional straps to use to improve floatation on fresh snow? Thanks so much!

They can handle fresh snow between 4-8 inches but this also depends on the athlete on how much work they are willing to take on. Deeper snow will require a lot more work and expended fuel. They do offer additional straps for securing the snowshoe to your foot for deeper snow. There are no options for extending these snowshoes to increase their flotation. MSR snowshoes are your best bet for rugged terrain and ever chaining conditions (amzn.to/2Kw4U9c).

Thanks a lot! I know Msr and I also search info about Atlas, but this TSL are really lightweight and I love to have ultralight stuff with me... but unluckily for simple walking are not the best probably... in the end I have to take with me almost 1,5kg with Msr or Atlas :/

Im really late, I dont know if you will see my comment but... I run with TSL 305 step-in with a summer running shoes. I like it, but often, my feets are really cold. For this year, I buy TSL Symbioz Racing for my girlfriend. I try it and it like realy nice! Did you think, if it can be fun to race it with SALOMON Quest Winter TS or it will be not fun to run/jog with thoses boots? Thank you for your help!

What shoes do you wear in these races ?

That is such an amateur video production. Off camera you have a disinterested person giving opinion while gazing at a phone; your smartwatch is taking more camera footage than the snowshoes. I managed little over a minute and half; you want more views and more positivity? Think professionally. I hope that helps.
