Look what the RU-vid gods brought up on my feed! This was the first book I read in 2022 as inspired by you and has now taken up a rightful place in my favourite novels of all time list. Adored it! And I loved this video with your proper Japanese pronunciations of all the names (in my head I managed to get every single one-off them wrong!). Wonderful review.
I just finished this a few days ago and im still processing it. I loved the sisters and their bond so much. The ending was a little befuddling and I dont quite know what to make of it. Its a wonderful read, though.
Taeko sounds like the sister to look out for! Gotta love strong female characters. I really enjoyed how you shared your knowledge of Japanese cultural background to the story - it really gives the review an extra depth! I’ve never heard anyone else give such an in-depth review of Japanese literature - especially the honne and tatemae culture. I feel like it’s both admirable and frustrating to read about characters who have enough self-control to conceal their true feelings (similar to my feelings about the shouganai mindset, I think). Wonderful review! Can’t wait to see what I think about this when I pick it up. Would love to hear you review more Japanese literature books!
I’m so looking forward to reading this! I really appreciate this review thank you so much for explaining this beautifully with the imagery. You seem like such a kind person :)
Hey thank you! If you subscribe to my channel you'll find that I read a fair amount of Japanese lit. Right now I am reading a novel by Osamu Dazai. Happy reading!
@@shawnbreathesbooks How was Osamu Dazai? What did you read? He is also one of the most popular novelist in Japan. I am looking forward to watching your review of Dazai.
Thank you so much for reviewing The Makioka Sisters! 😍 I just found a gorgeous copy at a library sale and had to buy it. A Japanese Jane Austen plot sound right up my alley.
Ha, that censor's report does make me want to read it! I've been meaning to get to this for ages. It sounds exactly like my sort of book even though I'm not a fan of Austen.
Eric Karl Anderson I say this joyously, but it does feel like the universe has been turned upside down if I have ended up recommending a book to you that you might enjoy! 😍
