This lyrical adaptation of the beloved Japanese novel by Junichiro Tanizaki was a late-career triumph for world-class director Kon Ichikawa. Revolving around the changing of the seasons, The Makioka Sisters (Sasame-yuki) follows the lives of four sisters who have taken on their family's kimono manufacturing business, over the course of a number of years leading up to the Pacific War. The two oldest have been married for some time, but according to tradition, the rebellious youngest sister cannot wed until the third, conservative and terribly shy, finds a husband. This graceful study of a family at a turning point in history is a poignant evocation of changing times and fading customs, shot in rich, vivid colors.

Just watched the movie. So utterly gorgeous. It takes a while to get used to all the different characters but when you do it's like an Ozu picture, and draws you in completely.

This is a very beautiful movie and a great addition to Tanizaki's book. The costumes and the cinematography are outstanding here. I feel really fortunate to have the DVD.

The trailer is OK, but it does not do justice to the movie (totally amazing) or to the remarkable book by Tanizaki, which is a MUST READ !

when I saw that the film was Region 1, I was so disappointed because I wouldn't be able to play it on my multi-region DVD player because I can play Region 2 DVDs, just not Region 1 :( I have the book and would have loved to see this

Cath Carson just a word of caution: Though the trailer boasted of a faithful adaptation of Tanizaki’s novel, I personally don’t find it so. There were certain parts that were altered with regards to characterisation, especially Yukiko. What’s more, the flood portion was not shown explicitly. That’s just my opinion. Other than that, it’s a great film and awesome actress, especially the gorgeous Yoshinoga Sayuri

Aside from an apparent good use of color, there isn't really too much captivating me in this trailer.

I've watched the movie so many times that I suspect subliminal messaging encouraging that! So I don't know whether to recommend it or not, LOL. I disagree with the trailer's claim that it's a "faithful rendering" of the novel. It's more like a very small part of the novel; but then, I felt the novel was overdone - fire, floods, you name it, there's little that DOESN'T happen in the book, while the movie is much more about the "problems with not easily being able to find a suitor that Yukiko will agree to marry." The visuals are utterly stunning; they truly require a large screen for best effect. After many viewings, I feel that a LOT of negative aspects of the family or societal situation are exposed, which one doesn't notice strongly during the first few viewings. The supposed super-feminine innocence of Yukiko is perhaps the main example of that - she flirts with both sisters' husbands to an extent that they've become VERY tired of it; yet the subtlety of social interaction, even within the family, maybe keeps those of us who aren't Japanese from picking up on these implications. But also, though the characters are impeccably polite to each other for the most part, they treat the servants quite harshly, blaming them for their own faults, nearly chuckling when one's brother is killed in action, etc. On the other hand, there is so much sheer visual beauty, in the kimonos and the landscape as well as the well-polished patina of Japanese cultural mores, that the film is quite transporting. Also, it's fascinating to have this look at what society may have been like before Japan became quite so westernized after WWII.

At that time, most Japanese were poor. The Japanese government has been pressuring its people because of the WWII. What comes out of the movie is the life of the upper class. The difference from the novel is that while the original novel depicts the gradual collapse of an upper-class family with a delicate perspective, the film focuses on the story of four sisters. TV drama based on the same Japanese original would have expressed the novel better.
