FAQ
Q) Why are there comments from a week ago when this video has just gone live today?
A) Patrons usually have early access to videos. I'll show the first version of a video on Patreon and often the feedback I get results in a video going through further revisions to improve it. e.g. Fix audio issues, clarify points, add extra footage or cut extraneous things out. The video that goes live on youtube is the final version.

I wonder if the reason for the cloud based system is to try and prevent the inevitable clones using the app. I've considered buying these a few times, but the cost always puts me off. With the appearance of copper-wire style WS2812B style addressable LEDs there's probably going to be competition soon.

Yeah, I'd want at least a PC app that can store all the data locally. It's a shame, because I love holiday lights. I've still got my Halloween fairy lights twinkling away merrily. I'd really like to be able to replace them with RGB, and at first this system looked just like what I want...but when the cloud server inevitably fails in a couple years, that'd be that for my expensive lights.
@okaro6595

I hate that when functionality that could be supported locally is done in a cloud. They could at any point stop the support. This happened to me with Eye-Fi SD cards. I fortunately found a third party alternative.

I like the mapping function, looks like the developers behind the software really thought that one out well. I moved to England eight years ago. Long story short, I have three children. My son (in Swindon) who I see every few months. My eldest daughter (and three granddaughters (two of which I've never even met because I can't afford to go back there) back in Wales and my youngest daughter whose son I've met once when he was having heart surgery about two years ago (at about one year old at the time). The reason I'm saying all this is because IT'S CHRISTMAS!!!! FUN TIMES FOR FAMILY!!!!! But also a time of soul destroying misery for others. Honestly and truthfully I wish you all the happiest Christmas ever cos I think we deserve that at least, but most importantly, make sure the people you love know that you do. EVERY day. NOT because you bought a card or bought an expensive gift, the unconventional way. Through showing it every day. Love you Mat and wish all of you all the (Covid permitting) best for the new year

We also have a regular 14' tree and I bought a 400 light string of twinkly lights last year to replace the stock lights. Again, it looks fantastic. Just as easy to set up as the twinkly tree. The twinkly website suggested 1200 lights to properly cover the tree, I can't imagine why anyone would use that many, total overkill. Anyway, thanks for the post, Mat. Cheers, David

My family has used the same artificial tree for twenty years. Individual clumps of branches hook onto a central pole at several height levels. The whole thing can be disassembled and stored in a bag in the attic. It even sheds like a real tree, as more plastic needles fall off each year. I love the convenience of never having to worry about getting a new tree each year. Fun story about Christmas tree lights: my grandfather always wanted a tree with all blue lights, but he was too cheap to buy one. Every time a light blew out on his strand of multicolored lights, he'd replace it with a blue bulb. My dad's childhood was spent watching the tree gradually get more and more blue until grandma forced him to just buy replacements for the last ten colored bulbs, because it was driving her crazy to have a 98% blue Christmas tree.

Cool product - as a stage production manager, I can see some great uses for a product like this as part of a lighting/set design. It would be cool of the company to add DMX or Artnet control, or even live video input through something like NDI to allow effects from a lighting desk or media server.
@hawk_ness
@hawk_ness 3 года назад
You can get WS2812 pixels and theres loads of devices such as the ESP32 or ESP8266 that can receive Artnet/ E1.31(sACN) when running something like the espixelstick firmware or something more feature rich WLED where it has its own built in effects but still can be controlled via Artnet/ E1.31. Plus its much much much cheaper than what Twinkly offer!
@GeorgeBratley
@GeorgeBratley 3 года назад
@@hawk_ness yeah, this would be the cheaper way to do it, but I'm very intrigued by the auto-map function of this. Manually spacially mapping WS2811 LEDs scattered randomly in something like resolume would be a nightmare.
@hawk_ness

@@GeorgeBratley Plan it out before placing them on thats what the Christmas light guys do for their outdoor displays. Never any need to map single pixels.

Thanks Mat. Sadly I can't afford a tree (Covid unemployment) like that so we will have to get a free tree from the pine forest and put our ancient fairly lights on it. I'm drooling with jealousy. Happy Xmas to you and Mrs. Techmoan.

Aaaw I really wanted to see that Union Jack animation on the tree :) Otherwise great video, and quite a nice invention from Twinkly! Although not for me, as continous twinkling lights in my vision will probably send me into a murderous rage.. But otherwise nice idea!

It’s unrecognisable with so few bulbs - that’s why I didn’t include it in the video. Another hundred or so more bulbs spaced equally and it might have started to look half like something.

I heard these sold out real quick when they first came out. Pretty cool how it learns where the lights are. My biggest issue with DIY IoT is the ones that are cloud-based, I like devices that can be controlled without internet connectivity or only by a mobile app.

I'm eagerly waiting for the day when I can finally buy DLC-s for my christmas tree up until the point where - to quote TC - the startup behind it inevitably folds and my tree gets bricked entirely. Sarcasm aside, I do like the concept, I just wish that we'd have retained something from the horrible, dumb Stone Age of actually giving out at least basic standalone softwares for various stuff.
