BUY DOC MARTEN 1460S HERE: fave.co/2L9y91z
Dr. Martens is one of the most iconic boots of all time, deeply tied to various music countercultures in the latter half of the 20th century.
Weird fact: the guy who started it all, Dr. Klaus Märtens, was a doctor in the Nazi army toward the very end of World War 2. He injured his foot skiing, didn’t like how Nazi boots felt as he was healing, so he made his own boots with rubber from Luftwaffe airfields after the war.
So in an industry that’s now jam packed with shanks, Goodyear welts, space age soles, and zillion dollar leathers, does the old 1460 still hold up?
READ THE FULL REVIEW: stridewise.com/dr-martens-1460...
OVERVIEW
A super uncomplicated boot without much stitching, Dr. Martens calls this “full grain leather” but it’s so corrected and thin that it looks like plastic. Otherwise the most notable features are the bouncy rubber sole and the trademark yellow stitching going around the welt. The shaft is also pretty high at over 7 inches, so make sure you have long socks.
LEATHER
It’s true that some people are comfortable calling a leather both full grain and corrected. Horween’s famous full grain leather Chromexcel is considered lightly corrected, for example. (Horween themselves told me that.)
But I’m wary of being told I’m an idiot for calling something “full grain corrected grain” so I’m calling this corrected grain. It’s from either South America or Asia (that’s all they could tell me) and while they say it’s “famously stiff,” I found it more thin and plasticky than anything else.
One cool thing is that you can get these in just about any color you can imagine (they have several floral patterns) and there’s even a Chromexcel if you want to pay the extra.

LEATHER CARE
Use their “Wonder Balsam,” which is made mostly of lanolin, beeswax, and coconut oil. I know a lot of people just use coconut oil, but the beeswax is important for weatherproofing. If that’s your priority though, they also sell a product called Dubbin Polish to add a layer of wax to the outside.
SOLE
The main event, this sole is definitely my favorite part of the shoe. It’s soft but not too soft and it has great traction and shock absorption. It’s a little squeaky on indoor surfaces, but this may abate with time.
After the rubber sole there’s a cork midsole and some polyurethane foam, which would help with the shock absorption.
Downsides: there’s no shank and it’s extremely hard to resole. Some people specialize in Dr. Martens soles, but don’t expect to be able to resole them.

FIT & SIZING
Size down one half or one full size. They have no half sizes available and no other widths, which will disappoint a ton of people.
In general, this doesn’t fit the foot super well. It has a blobby, generic shape that didn’t contour the natural shape of my foot well.
PRICE
Between $120 and $145. If you’re patient, it’s not hard to find a place where they’re on sale.
VERDICT
Dr. Martens Pros
• Inexpensive
• Sole is super soft
• Pretty water resistant
• Casual, can be worn with a t-shirt
• Cultural icon
Dr. Marten Cons
• Laces come undone easily
• Difficult to resole
• Doesn’t fit very well, pretty shapeless
• Lack of a shank
• Thin, plasticky leather
• Not versatile
• Not very mature or masculine
I don’t love these shoes. Read my full review for more of my reasoning - Google “stridewise dr martens.”

I've been wearing Doc Martens here in the UK since 1973 when I was thirteen and I still love them. After the break-in period they're like slippers. Now, at 57, I'm the 'old man' you speak of. And guess what? I really don't care too much what others think because I have comfortable, relatively hard wearing footwear that doesn't cost the earth. Being an older man, wearing hard leather soled shoes/boots feels like someone gently tapping the back of your head with a small wooden mallet for every step. Not so with my trusty old DM's. Right now I have two pairs, the 1460 you have here and the limited 'For Life' run (now discontinued, but still honoured) both in black.. If I live long enough to need a new pair, I'll be getting the Made In England version in the tan colour. If people are so shallow that they think an 'older man' looks childish because of his footwear then that's cool as well. Better than being ignored completely (which is what happens when you get older)......

You know who also worked for the nazis? Hugo Boss. And I don't see a lot of people not wearing his clothes for that reason.. Also, Adi Dassler made shoes for the Nazi Army, yes that's Adidas. People had to do certain things back then just to survive. Doesn't mean they still have or ever had the same opinions that the people they worked for.

Feminine? Yes. Actually, a lot of nice the men's clothes that gained traction on men's fashion advice channels like slim jeans, white button-downs, and shirt -sleeve v-neck tees have a subtle feminine edge. I believe fashion is best when the best elements of masculine and feminine design are brought together without anyone realizing it.

Button-down shirts? Feminine? Button-down shirts (or Polo collars, as known by Brooks Brothers) were used by Polo players to keep their collars from flapping all over the place. Jeans only became slim because they were slowly incorporated into the fashion cycle. As evidenced by LVC (not the best source, but easiest to find), the 1922 jean is much wider than those from the 50s and 60s, despite the 20s and the 60s having a similar pendulum swing in silhouette. What I mean to say by all of this is that there's frankly nothing feminine about these clothing. Not to say that you're wrong, in fact I quite agree. But one needs to recognise where the femininity comes from. Jeans, for example, have meant masculinity, ruggedness and toughness for a century now.

I have had the same pair of Dr. Martens for 5 years. I wear them multiple times a week. I have worn them to 10+ music festivals. They are so comfortable and they keep my feet dry and warm. The leather stays in great condition if you just moisturize them every 6 months or so. The sole hardly has any wear at all, and they are awesome for climates where we get a lot of snow. They have a lot of grip. Also, what planet do you live on where $140 is a cheap shoe? That sounds incredibly pretentious. That is a lot of money to most people.

My Martens last between three and five years, usually I've worn out the sole. I wear them like August to May or something like that. And in on rainy summers days. @@Stridewise Wasn't much of Doc guy but it was an iconic brand that I wanted to give a try. I bought the Newton, which is Doc trying to appeal to people who don't know the brand's cache and just compare them on the face value merits like yourself. If you review that boot you'll find it's perfect for being on your feet all day, has a more versatile silhouette but definitely won't last as long as traditional Docs as the leather is super soft and they've used weight reducing technology throughout the shoe to make more comfortable for the average person right out of the box. A Doc purist's worst nightmare, but probably will be a great seller. Finally, and as a Black man who knows the history of most American, British, Italian, French and Australian clothing and shoe companies- if I held their histories' against them now, I couldn't shop with 90% of most brands.

Worn a pair made in Thailand since 2009. They’re tough, they’ll take a beating, they’re really comfortable and once you break them in thoroughly, you don’t even need to lace them up fully. The sole flexes with no heel slippage even the laces untied. The shiny leather cracks pretty easily and it isn’t pretty but they are iconic and they aren’t going anywhere.

Interesting review on an iconic boot. I have owned one pair years ago, they were brown shoes and actually the leather and quality was quite good. The sole didn't excite me so much. Too squeeky and squishy for me but I enjoyed the style. I'm surprised they told you it's a goodyear welted boot because cobblers usually wont touch these for any sole problems. Apparently the welt is made of PVC (not leather like most boots) and the sole is then heat melted onto the welt. Seems like an unusual process but it's worked for them and it probably is very securely attached and won't separate. Essentially they are-throw away boots once the sole is worn out. For the price, that might be fine for some. Thanks again for your excellent reviews. I always watch them.
@Stridewise
@Stridewise 5 лет назад
Yeah like I said, I think they call it a Goodyear welt because the upper is attached to the PVC welt which is then attached to the sole, as opposed to it being directly attached to the sole so they can get away with saying Goodyear welt but I feel like they're playing kind of fast and loose with those definitions haha. But yeah, very few cobblers will even attempt to resole these. Glad you liked the video, Duke!

I picked up a pair of their Leos (unfortunately discontinued) a while back and they have almost none of the issues that the 1460s have. Thicker leather with a more matte charcoal color, flannel(ish) lining, and less corrected leather that has aged surprisingly well. I've had them for nearly 6 years and they definitely look good considering all the abuse I've put them through. The lugs on the sole are about half of their original size and polished smooth and the heel is starting to separate, but they still keep my feet dry and look damn decent doing it

This review is good but you come off as the type of man who looks down on people who can't afford £/$200+ shoes. The amount of comfort I got from some redwings I had were great. I think you're never gonna break out of the niche you're in giving terrible reviews to popular shoes and then critiquing them for being really cheap", not to say they don't deserve a bad review, it's your opinion, I'm still gonna wear mine and your review won't affect me, maybe just don't review popular boots if you don't want your dislike bar to look the way it is. $140 is not cheap at all for the common people. I'm lucky to own the shoes and boots I do, and I realise not everyone can dish out the money, but you really do come off as "pretentious" because all I can glean from this review is you are a snobby, rich man who hates shoes that are $140, you also personally look down men over 30 by calling them feminine, and that they should get with the times, what you said is insulting. People disliking this video shouldn't be complaining about what you said about the shoe, but how terribly you came off within it
@Stridewise
@Stridewise 5 лет назад
Hey Brandon, thanks for your comment. I have to say I don't think a shoe being cheap is a bad thing at all, I'm a huge cheapskate and value for money is a big priority. It's why I think Thursday ($199) is the best boot on the market and I really like Timberlands and LL Bean shoes which are around the same price. I just don't like these boots in particular, for a bunch of reasons outside looking cheap.

@@Stridewise I'm actually glad you elaborated, I feel I came off quite harsh, and it was no way a comment on your actual character. Another nice video! I knew very little about Doc Martens Boots. After watching your very informative and educational video, I’ve learned as much as I need to know about these boots :). After watching a number of your videos, Nick, I’m confident that you provide a fair and accurate assessment of this boot. I’ve learned that Doc Martens aren’t necessarily for me. For starters, having a boot which is taller than my socks would drive me crazy. On the other hand, they are quite reasonably priced which might make this a good “starter” boot for a younger person. I look forward to seeing your new productions and this video did not fail. Great job!

Firstly, Dr Martens are also made in Vietnam, and Vietnam make the half sizes. Dr Martens certainly do have a shank. I have cut the soles of several pairs of DM's to see what's inside the sole. Personally, I think they would be better off without the shank. DM's have a wooden shank that can actually break in half from severe flexibility (possibly from squatting), and then that break can cause a popping sound within the sole when walking. One thing that shits me about DM's is that the welt is only stitched to the leather upper. It needs to be glued as well, otherwise there can be squeaking caused by the welt being able to move independently and rub against the leather. This tends to happen when the yellow stitching loosens slightly from wear. Apart from all this, I love Dr Martens. I am 44 and have worn them for years and have many pairs. I wear 8, 10 and 14 hole DM's. They are not a boot for Nazis. DM's are popular among skinheads because they were a working class boot during the 70's-80's, and traditional skinheads are working class. Real Nazis will never wear DM's because they moved production to Asia, and no self-respecting Nazi is going to wear Asian-made boots. The English DM's have stronger, more porous leather and a stronger sole that doesn't wear down as quickly. They were never designed to be a fashion boot for teenagers. In England they were the boot issued for factory workers, Police that patrolled on foot, the postman delivering letters on foot, school students and I think even the military at one point. Despite what they have now become, DM's were a working mans boot that became popular with punk bands, skinheads and the working class British due to their durability and quality, and as long as you buy English-made DM's, there's no reason why they shouldn't remain that way with grown men.

I still got a pair I bought over 15 years ago. Punctured the air soles over time and some of the folds did crack through all the way eventually, even though they were very well taken care of. The steel toe caps also started to rust as they started to take in water. Still, they seem to be of a higher quality compared to the new ones. I've never bought another pair since because they just don't feel right anymore compared to my old ones. Way more flimsy and the leather and overall feel just seem off compared to the old ones. I believe you can be far better off for the price they ask.

They're not broken in until you've worn them 3-4 days a week for two years straight, and at that point, they're just getting started. I've never heard anyone say they look feminine. For comfort, though, they're the best. Lace yours tighter. Keep wearing them. Be sure you have the right size. They seem to lace more tightly after you've worn them longer. Mine always stay tied, but of course, there's a method of lacing them so that they never come untied. A friend showed me and said it was the skinhead way. I prefer mine laced the traditional way, and if you don't think they go with certain outfits or pants styles (or are acceptable footwear for people over a certain age), I've got a bird to show you, too.

@Stridewise - I understand what you mean. I think that it's the black color that sometimes comes off a little as "in-your-face" or "attitudey." But if you get them in the brown leathers, like Gaucho or Aztec, they look much better and supple. Kind of a rugged work/hiking boot vibe. I'm 32 and I own a pair of Gaucho's, and in my opinion, the browns are much more subtle and "adult looking." And also more versatile for different casual outfits. Also with the brown, I think the yellow stitching matches much better. ...Like a construction boot. I personally like them as a no fuss, ready for action type of boot. It's just convenient that they're pretty much enjoyable right out of the box. At least that's been my experience with them (twice). Plus I have a bit of a wide foot and a high foot slope, so it's a bit difficult for me to find a boot that agrees with my foot. However, I am curious about those Thursday Captain boots (in wide) and the Blundstone Dress Series Chelsea Boots. A review on those would be cool (and helpful). Anyways, those were just my thoughts. Keep up the good work!

Tbh, I own a pair of Docs and I wear them almost every day. I've been wearing them every day to work where I walk/run 5-10 miles for the past year and a half, I wear them on most of my days off, and they have held up really nicely. They look a little worn down (in fairness though, i don't do anything to take care of them at all. If I cleaned them they'd probably look nice again), but they are still extremely comfortable and thick enough to protect my poor little ankles from my clumsiness. The only drawback is that it isn't from their work boot line, so they have no grip at all. I do recommend them to everyone who asks for a work shoe recommendation. They are, in my experience, durable and comfy enough for most jobs, and they aren't horrendously ugly so you can wear them outside of work, too. All that being said, I'm really bummed out at the comments about other peoples docs not holding up as well as mine. Makes me reeeaaallly reconsider buying another pair :^(

In my mind these have their own category they belong in. They’re more like a sneaker version of a boot than what I think of when I think of a boot. Looking at the 1460 for example, which is what most people think of when they think of Docs, I see them as a jeans and T-shirt boot. I’m not sure what else someone would do with them, but I’m a simple man and not a fashion guy as it were. I have the “greasy” 1460 myself which are very comfortable. Though I’ve never seen them as feminine, I definitely would not call them mature looking by any stretch. Were it not for a strong nostalgic attachment I wouldn’t have any. Again, they belong in their own place and deservedly so. But, I wouldn’t put them on all fours with boots like Alden’s or Red Wings or the like.

Regarding the shape of the boot, the blobby-ness of doc Martens suck if your foot doesn't fit that well. But part of the purpose of the break-in period of doc Martens is reshaping the shoe, to better fit the feet that are wearing the shoes. Whether or not the break in period hurts, it is loosening the material so that the boot feels more unique to your foot. The reason why a lot of people support doc Martens, I find, is the comfort it provides. In fact, that is why they were even made. doc Martens have become a stylish boot, commonly associated with people who consider themselves as rebels or outcasts, etc. When I received my 1460s, the leather was very stiff and so I didn't even think about the thickness of the leather. However, the thickness of the leather didn't seem to have much of an effect on anything. Doc Martens do tend to have a squeaking problem, but I have seen a video that shows a solution if the squeaking is a problem. As stated earlier in the video, the boots mold to your feet, so how exactly did you expect them to fit? although, I do agree that there should maybe be a a wider version available. One thing I find great about doc Martens, is the association with the ability to do whatever you want, wearing them however pleases you most.

I'm over 50 and still have the first pair of docs I bought in 1980. I have also had about a dozen other DMs since then with varying degrees of satisfaction - they definitely played with sizing over time. For sure the newer production is not the same and I can't get a fit in any style any more. The last pair I had did not last very long either Luckily I have been able to move to John Fluevogs - he worked with DM and always has some street/stompy boots that I can wear. I have been in boots that style since I was a teen, and for people who do a lot of walking in the city, they are a great alternative to sneakers without being overly formal, and now they have styles that are more office appropriate or for people who have to stand all day. There's really not much you can say about the styling of DMs - if you don't like them, you don't like them. But yeah, quality is not the same and that is an OK reason to not like them I suppose.

I sized up on the 1460s. I'm normally a 10.5 US, but the 10 was ridiculously small on me. I've read that with the 1460s you should size up, but with other Doc styles sizing down is suggested. In any case, don't take for word the "size up" assertions. With the 1460s size up and maybe get an insole and wear thick socks. I'm currently just wearing a thick sock and they're fine; however, they're also brand new and the leather may stretch, so an insole might be necessary in the future. MAAAYBE. If at all possible, try a size up and a size down in store just to be sure. If you're ordering online, make sure that there is a proper return/exchange policy.

I'm 55 and I have 3 pair! BASTARD! 🤣🤣🤣 I wear them mainly for comfort, as I do a lot of walking. The quality has definitely declined since manufacturing moved to Asia. A good alternative is Solovair made at NPS. They produced the original Dr Martens boots in the late 50s. Solovair boots are still made at the same factory in Wollaston, Northamptonshire.

They are 1460s but they have more shape to them than the pair in your video. Yours go straight up from the heel where as mine slope inwards conforming more to the shape of my feet. They have broken in nicely and have really molded to my feet. I can see what you mean by yours being shapeless.

“Inorganic rubber”. Lol. That’s a fancy way of saying PVC or Vinyl. I’m 38 and used to love DM. I’ve tried 2 pair since they moved their operations to China and both have been trash compared to the English made one. Now I own a shoe repair shop and have seen my share of these come through the door, they really can be resoled but there’s no point as it changes the look and feel and costs about the same as new ones. The best things to do is a thing half some and heel, kind of like a retread really. It’s cheaper and retains the look and feel of the DM sole. I wear mostly Alden boots now every day, if I ever come across a nice vintage pair of DMs I’ll pick them up but I’m not giving the Chinese ones a 3rd try.

@@Stridewise The hard to repair goodyear welt has to do with their Airwear sole I think
@mcearl8073
@mcearl8073 5 лет назад
Stephen Hauer There’s a few reasons they are hard to resole. It mostly boils down to how they’ll look and feel when they are done and what’s available for us to use. With the soles available I’d either have to make them heavier and firmer with a solid rubber sole or use something like the vibrant Gumlite soles that are no where near as durable. Both options will make them look different since they won’t have that translucent look to them and they won’t have that ridged finish on the edge. It’s also much more difficult to glue anything onto the vinyl welt. The original ones have vinyl soles too and are melted together. There are ways of doing it, especially with modern cements but The majority of cements a lot of the old timer guys use for leather and rubber just don’t work on PVC. It really just boils down to it being very close to the cost of new boots for them to be grossly different than they were as new in both look and feel where as something like a redwing is usually less than 1/2 the cost of new to resole, sometimes much less on the more expensive brands and they get restored back to exactly how they were when new. So it’s not really that they are hard in general, it’s just hard to make it worth it unless the person wants something different, like a colored sole or something.

I got a pair of 1460 "For Life" boots. Unfortunately they wised up real quick and stopped making/selling them lol. But basically, they're built completely different. They feel completely different from my other 1460's. The Sole is much softer, the leather felt absolutely comfy and broken in the minute I slipped them on, and they last WAY longer. And even when they break down, you can send them back to re-build for the rest of your life totally free of cost! It's insane... I'll never have to buy a pair of docs again! Recently bought a pair and found the insole to be terribly uncomfortable. Especially in the toebox. It literally feels like its just hard wood in there. Does that ever break in, or are we just supposed to be ok with the balls of our feet being grinded into oblivion? My gf has a vintage pair and the insole is definitely not like that on them. Its padded all the way through. Wondering if other people have noticed this?

I agree with you. I own a pair of older DM's. I actually bought another one- the Pascal model but my real issue with these boots is the fact that they don't have a shank which make them very unstable and really don't give enough arch support and ends up being painful after a while.

In the uk they luckily had two half sizes and it was 6.5 and 9.5, I'm a 9.5 and I did try to size down but size 9 wasn't wide enough and I think size 10 would be too big because I buy size 10 trainers and they are already a bit big, they should definitely make more half sizes because 9.5 fits perfect for me.

*To the people in the comments saying this guy doesn't know what he is talking about* This guy is reviewing these from the perspective of someone who is really into boots. Most people who wear Doc Martins, are people who don't know a lot about boots and don't need them to be durable beyond just them walking around urbanized areas in them. You shouldn't shit on him when he's just being honest. They aren't that durable, and high quality. Mainly, that's because they don't need to be. Their target audience is mainly teens who are into street fashion at this point. Nothing wrong with that, just pointing it out.

Goodmorning/evening. I was just wondering. As i am really into boots myself and own many (fry, justins, wolverines, ariat, catipillar just to name my usual rotation) i was just wondering what you consider durable. I have docs that i use on the farm in rotation with all the above and they hold up just fine. From my own perspective i dont find they are inferior to any of the aforementioned. Ive even taken them on hikes and they hold up wonderfully. How exactly have your experiences differed?
@GWizJackson
@GWizJackson 5 лет назад
@@adurnaebrithil Personally, I've never owned a pair, but I go to a college where they're as common as common can be. Although most of them seem to hold up well for what people put them through, I can't say I see them being more durable than a pair of my boots. Let's say my Carolina's, for instance. I've owned my pair of them since the 10th grade and put them through construction/carpentry work, many camping trips, hikes, and tons of wear. I still wear them. Whereas some of the kids on my campus had to replace their Dr. Martins after about a year's wear on a college campus. I don't necessarily think they're bad shoes, but I feel that there may be some inconsistency in the quality control and that you can get better boots for around the same price. Just how I see it from my own experience.

@@GWizJackson My apologies for the tardy response. I wanted to get to a proper computer instead of my cell phone. From what I have heard myself carolinas are a handsome and durable boot, and though I have never owned a pair I may just consider getting some to try. Where I am from Docs are not common in any capacity, and from the 100 plus mile range I tend to travel to and from I only ever see a handful. I will admit to you that I have heard that there are come quality issues, and perhaps I just got lucky with the pair that I have. It is sad to see that my experience is not necessarily uniform across all spectrums as I do love them and their history. If you ever do want to try them I beeseach you to at least once, and if not I respect that decision. Though I have had my pair for a short 4 years I still find they hold up the same as when I got them out of the box. Although I never took them on a contruction/carpentry job around this time they are in mud, cold, and water due to sugar cane harvesting season. of course again this is purely through my subjective experience. I appreciate the conversation you have had with me on this topic. to often people on the internet forget tha the person on the other side is also a human being. With that said. Based on the images of you walking in them, I would guess you could have gone down another size because of how much bend the upper had. That may be a difference between the Asian vs English made. Mine are made in England and I don't get any creasing, but they are also almost 2 full sizes smaller than my other shoes. Stylewise, I dig them, but I also work in a factory and lean into more of a punk style so they're a pretty obvious choice for my closet. I can't totally agree with your opinion of them as immature/feminine looks, but that's fine. Comfort, they're my favorite. I have hip problems, so a lot of boots are just not an option without expensive insoles. Docs I wear straight out of the box with no issue aside from the laces. I changed mine out after a week for some long ones so that I can wrap around and than tie, which has taken care of those problems.All that said, good info for someone thinking of getting a pair. Always check thrift stores too. A lot of people give up on them because they buy the wrong size or don't wait out the break in time. I got mine for $10 at goodwill, still had the tags on one boot. And got my sister a pair of the purple ones for under $30 a few years back.
