The Nightowl is the more overall accurate headphone and not as dark when compared with Nighthawk. Both sound great and are non fatiguing, etc.

I have these for about a year now and I DO NOT recommend carrying them around, they feel quite fragile and a harder bump can leave marks or break something. Also, with not even a year in the headband leather hooks on the left side started to come apart and keep falling now. I wrote to Audioquest asking for help, but they said since they aren´t in production they can't help at all so I also DO NOT recommend for anyone to get them, even thought I think they sound great, unless you will only keep them at home or the office (which basically mandate a cable change) and be VERY careful with them all the time.

According to my logic, anything physical can be burnt in, engines need run in, headphones need burn in and that's it. Love the look of the NightOwl 🔥

I found that the microsuede pads fix the slight mid bass bloat to my ears.....

i havent even watched it yet (will do) but already liked it since i know this will be good. Im curious about your current setup. Have you changed dac/amps/speakers etc since last tour? Cheers man!

Stranded wire is better as it has more surface area. Go Search "Skin Effect"!

@@phototristan So you trust AQ more than well known physics... Single core wire is stronger, easier to solder and much less likely to get cut or nicked, yet almost no one use it anymore these days. That's not without a reason!

AQ must know a lot about wires, so they are able to produce thousand-dollar cables! I guess power company should use single core wire instead too since AQ states that they are so much better*!

I am torn between the Aaron Flow Closed and this set. I am looking for a good closed headphone that is a step up from my HD650s. Unfortunately the Z1Rs are out of reach for me. Can you compare the NOs to the AFCs?

Hi Tristan, thanks for the review. May I ask if you had to choose between Nighthawk 1 vs Nightowl Carbon, which would you choose? Any chance you can do a follow up review comparison after burning in the NH Carbon? Does NH Carbon come with the original NH single core cable?

I prefer the Nighthawk, it has a bit smooth mids than the NightOwl. The NH Carbon does not come with the solid core cable, it's a stranded one now.

It's good to have some variety. These are easier to take with you and if Audioquest stops making headphones, they may become collectors items.

I bought the Z1R's at the recommendation by phototristan after he replied to one of my comments. Couldn't be happier. I was unhappy with the bass of my Focal Elears which would have driver popping if it was overextended. The Z1R's can handle everything I throw at it and the bass is incredible.

Apex Predator I love the Z1Rs, they are a great compliment to my HF800 S. Although I am very curious to hear how the HD820's will stack up against them.

@The Bishop The Nightowl has a better lower bass impact and overall less midrange oriented sound, while still being nice and smooth.

These are resolving in the upper mids? Tristan, you and I must have very different ears. IME, these had literally no upper midrage whatsoever, followed by a harsh treble peak to give a false impression of detail/treble extension. The tonal balance is completely thrown off. It's legitimately one of the worst headphones I've ever heard, they're worth listening just for laughs. They have great ergonomics, but boy do they sound bad. EDIT: To check if I'm not crazy, here's a graph comparing the HD 650 and Nightowl. phototristan What I heard matches the measurements by InnerFidelity. I'd rather trust my own ears and measurements with a $50k rig. I don't think both of the units we used were defective. Darko calls these neutral (what?) and the Amazon reviews are... well... Amazon reviews lol That was a store demo, so it was probably used for a while (though it would surprise me if mechanical burn in were even a factor). It sounded very clean in terms of distortion, but the balance was so laughably bad.

InnerFidelity measurements have been proven wrong on more than one occasion by Jude from Head-Fi and others so we can't trust those at all. Plus Tyll has said his hearing is going out too. That said, everyone hears different so we should never expect every headphone to sound the same to every person but more than likely the NightOwl's that you heard were shot being that they were a demo pair.

These are all possible, but honestly fairly unlikely. Anyway, I invite you to listen to the synth in the intro of "Spark" by Hiromi Uehara on the NightOwl Carbon, and compare that to another fairly neutral can you have like the Focal Clear. The NightOwl should sound much more hollow.

Placeboquest should be burnt o the ground. There is no burn in. It just takes that look to get used to the sound. Placeboquest's business model is based on marketing and cognitive tricks.

From a marketing standpoint, it would be more effective to advertise 'no burn in needed' so if that were actually the case, they would do it.
