This week and in fact today (May 15th), the channel celebrates its anniversary of car based content so I decided to mark the occasion by reviewing the car that first featured on the channel, my 1999 Renault Mégane Classic 1.6e RN Liberté.
This is not a professional review. All views and opinions are my own.
Thank you to Joseph Lloyd for proof viewing this review!

Great content and great flow in your Review. It wasn't biased at all. Your Dad and Yourself should be congratulated for caring for this Lovely Megane Classic from new. One asset that late 90s cars had that earlier ones did not was very good resistance to rust. Even 1993 Cavalier hatchbacks started to rust in the rear arches at 4 or 5 years old. Top marks to your Dad for the colour choice and RN spec because the skinnier tyres with the higher profile gave the best ride in the range. I Wish I still had the Citroën Xsara VT Turbo D that I bought in 1999. Sadly, like the Peugeot 406, the air intake was behind the front bumper and spelt the end of many of these cars in flood water. Mine after 10 years and 130,000 miles, luckily it was still worth £2000 against a new Kia Picanto under the 2009 Scrappage Scheme. It really didn't have a spot of rust anywhere. Absolutely love this Megane Classic. I am keeping an eye for a late Mk1 Megane Scenic thanks to your videos.

Thank you Sean! I don't think it was too bad for a first attempt at a review, still I have a format set up now for future reviews! I think this Megane was about 13 when rust started coming through on the arches so it has happened slowly. I do need to attend to them at some point. It still runs very nicely though and has that special place in my heart. Funnily enough, he chose green as it was the only colour in the range that he actually liked. I've only ever seen one other Megane saloon in this colour. The ride is definitely comfy. As a car enthusiast, the scrappage scheme was not my cup of tea but from a daily driver pov, it made every sense to trade in a car worth very little money and get £2000 off of a new car. The Megane Scenic was an incredibly popular car. They used to be everywhere but now, you rarely see them. Good luck in your search, hopefully you find a good one! 😁

@@FuelPower I'm afraid that it was a no brainer. The Xsara was worth about £700 with an engine that worked. With a cracked jet pushing oil into the water, she was worth about £200. Also I had to step out into sill deep water in shoes and push the car out of the way and then walk home in the rain. My Mechanic did get it dried out and she went for about 9 months until the expansion bottle filled with oil one day.

Excellent video sir. Very detailed and I think you certainly covered everything. I know what you mean about the taillamps. I’ve followed quite a few Meganes with a total disco going on at the back lol

Thanks Ian! Thought i'd have a go at reviewing, have a clear idea of what I need to do going forward with these too! I've never seen the disco rear light issue at all! Not had it at all! Never say never though 😂

Fantastic review. As you know I'm always happy to see some Mégane content, especially novel in English as many of the videos on the MK1 are from other countries. I know RN spec hatchback models didn't get colour coded bumpers so not sure if yours has them because it's a classic or because it's a Liberte special edition. I wonder if the rear lamp issues mentioned are down to the wiring getting worn where the tailgate opens. That's a common issue for lots of cars. Coil packs in phase 2 when they went to coil on plug were often problematic and had one for each cylinder, when one failed another would usually be close behind. The seats are fantastically comfortable in old Renault's. Even the sports front and bucketed tears in my coupe are way more comfortable than they look, of course space in the back and front headroom is far less generous than in your classic. having AC is a real bonus. Initially on early phase 1 cars it was optional only on higher spec cars. Phase 2 cars for it as standard on many models along with lots of other standard kit over the phase 1. Tinted rear lights was a common style for Renault in the 90s from the MK1 Clio to Laguna and Mégane X64 was the general code name though I believe the X was later swapped out for other letters depending on body style.

Thanks Mark! Happy to hear you enjoyed the review! Hopefully i will get the chance to do a few more besides the obvious other two cars in the future! I actually have a Mégane brochure from 1998 and none of the trims in that seemed to have black plastic bumpers, they were all body colour so I think it's likely that we in the UK got the classic with body colour bumpers as standard whereas other markets didn't. Don't hold me to that though. The seats in it are seriously comfy, you can cruise for hours in it very happily. We'll be able to get a direct comparison between Coupe and Saloon at the meet in July!

@markonmotoring 3 года назад
@@FuelPower I certainly hope so, think you may be a bit taller than me though so you may find the coupe a snug fit by comparison. 😅 The classic as well as being a traditional three box design was probably supposed to be a bit more upmarket than the hatch so could explain the bumpers. I've got a number of brochures for the phase 1 coupe and I also have one dated 1997 for the hatch version. Hatch and Scenic were definitely the bigger selling models.

I disagree with your comment about the original radio. Maybe the RN had a crappie radio than the RT but my parents had a Renault Mègane Classic RT in blue brand new in 1997 and there was not a thing wrong with the radio in that. We also had a rev counter, remote central locking, twin airbags, front electric windows, rear headrests and electric mirrors as standard. No air con or abs do. Nice steering wheel in this one do. In the parents the horn was two buttons on the steering wheel. Never made sense that and drove my Mum nuts.
