I’ve seen a growing trend over the years, where restaurants and ‘gastropubs’ pretend that the Sunday roast is some exquisite display of culinary craftsmanship … and then charge you a ridiculous price for it. It’s all nonsense. I’ve been going to Toby for I dunno, 20 odd years and you cannot beat it for value. And what’s more, I always tip the waiting staff there as they’re genuinely rushed off their feet. I’d rather do that, than some sneaky 15% ‘service charge’ aka profit. It’s a great review fella - enjoyed the vid!

Thank you very much. I'm going to say that's one of the truest comments that I've seen on here so far. I think Gastropubs tend to overdo what is a rather simple dish as well. Thank you for commenting. Really agree with that, been thinking it myself.

For us non-Brits, the Sunday roast is Super yummy though so if one doesn’t have a little British granny at home making it for us..where do you suggest we go because if a tourist wants to go to a Toby Carvery while sightseeing in London, the closest one is 45 minutes away?

OMG, I've been to Roast! In my holiday to the UK in 2019, my partner & I wanted to go for one really good roast dinner & I think the online reviews led us there. The restaurant is beautiful & the service was very good. The food was good, but we found the flavours to be just a little bland overall. I remember that night because we were staying at a hotel in Westminster & did a big walk back to the hotel along the Thames. Your video really bought back some memories. 😊

*Thoroughly and Fairly reviewed Sunday Roast- Expensive v Cheaper 👌👌🙌👏🏻👏🏻* There’s aspects to both that are appealing and against.depends on everyone’s preferences I think. I am a traditional person and love a roast, definitely number1 favoured meal for me. However,I would choose Toby for one reason. The beef. You say the beef was intense and with the fact of it being a hundred day aged,I quite believe it. If I tasted it,and I didn’t like the flavour, I wouldn’t eat it and I’d be unhappy in short.Toby wins this one.thanks for this insightful review!
@uglenddalejones2

I don’t mind paying more as an occasional splurge ,I like quality food I hold my hands up,I’m a foodie. But knowing this valuable information in the beef, I would be walking out disappointed and hungry, sense dictates my reasons-the pricing is reflected by what is served as well. Cheers 🙌👍

The first roast, at ..Roast... in my opinion is daylight robbery lol..Absolutely criminal with the service charge. The yorkshire pudding looked to me over done. The portion was on the small side, a very expensive disappointment! The meal at the Toby looked amazing, thats a proper English roast, nothing fancy, just what you would expect and of course you can eat as much as you like. The gravy was thick , perfect! The Toby wins hands down..

Edit: Post below is incorrect as several people pointed out you can go back for seconds. Kept for chain of flow. Toby isnt actually all you can eat. They serve you the meat portion and then everything else (sides) is everything you can fit on one plate (no seconds). So you can absolutely stuff yourself with one plate but you cant go back for more if you didn't take enough the first time.

Hi everyone. Me and the cameraman filmed this video last week, but I thought I’d wait to upload it until today as it’s Sunday. Really enjoy doing these types of reviews but mostly because I really want to hear what you all think and what place you prefer in a similar way to the Full English breakfast video. Also - I already know some of you will be saying Gary you always get beef and why didn’t you get any other meat at the Toby? For fairness of review, I must get as similar as possible! Hope you all enjoy the video and let me know what one you prefer the look of down below. PS. I mentioned that the roast potatoes were cooked in goose fat, I meant beef fat!

Hi Gary, this is such a difficult comparison to make. If someone is looking for a relaxed Sunday roast with minimal fuss and value for money, then Toby wins without question. However, if someone is looking for the ambience and waiter service of a fine-dining restaurant, then I would say Roast is their place. Both have their place for different occasions.

Toby have really improved in recent times, they are great value. Naturally Roast as a restaurant is going to have some extra things to help it standout but are they worth the extra? It’s probably fair to say they are both good but in different ways, Roast is not your average place to eat and the 100 day old meat is what makes the difference as it were. Toby is decent quality at a great price with plenty of value to match. For a birthday treat then Roast might be worth a bit extra but Toby are the winners in my book, there’s plenty to like and very little to complain about. That Toby beef was leftover from the day before. You can see how it's dried out. That's why he was trying to give it all to you. Absolutely guarantee it. And it certainly couldn't be said it's cooked medium! The Roast Yorkshire was borderline burnt. Real gravy is a lot thinner than Bisto. That was horseradish cream. It doesn't have to be super spicy. I'd still rather have the Toby than the Roast, especially at less than a third of the price.

The 'Roast' looks incredible. Wow. Very high quality and shows you get whatyou pay for. Obviousy, the meat is going to vary somewhat, due to being cut from a joint. Yes, I too like strong horseradish - but you can't complain, as they likeley moderate it to suit all palates.... I prefer the thinner gravy to the one shown in the all you can eat. Can't say I like the look of the all you can eat beef, but as you say it tasted good. Your plate full is massive! Far too much for me to enjoy comfortably, and stunning for the price. Horses for courses, as they say. Oh, but hate service charges. Just pay the staff properly.

Nice comparison. I've had a few Toby's, and usually 'big up'. Get a bit of all the meats, yorkshire, sausage, and all the veg. And of course if you're still hungry there's the bottomless veg option, you can go back and back. As most have said, amazing value, and a really good, and filling meal. Now i've never been to Roast, but they seemed short on a number of things... 1 carrot, not much beef, and their biggest sin, thin gravy. They should call it jus, the posh title for watery gravy. And of course price-wise, there is no comaprison. That said, if I were in the area I would give Roast a try. If only to sample those roasties that you praised so highly. I don’t buy that it is outdated. We are constantly reinventing the past. Second hand goods are now pre-loved, cycling is the new motoring. The meal at Roast isn’t a dinner. There are several things to keep in mind here... The Borough Market business "Roast"... Is an upmarket restaurant catering for those with higher than average food quality expectations... And it's patrons obviously either don't mind or care about paying their prices... Or their service charge of 15% being applied to the bill... But paying over £40 per head for a Roast Dinner here... Isn't within the price range of the majority of diners... In just the same way as anyone that uses a budget supermarket for their weekly shopping... Wouldn't be able to afford the prices being charged at a much more exclusive supermarket like Waitrose... Where the same branded products in your shopping trolley in Waitrose... Would be significantly more expensive than in a budget supermarket... And where the overall ambiance of the store... And the staffs attentiveness to their customers... Would generally be of a higher standard in the Waitrose supermarket... But you must accept that the price of £9.49 for the Toby Carvery Roast Dinner... Is an absolute bargain. Everything on the plate there looked very nice... You had more than enough Roast Beef... Plus you could return to the Carvery Station and top up with as much of the other items on offer like... Roast Potatoes... Mashed Potatoes... Stuffing... Vegetables and Gravy... They only limit the various meats available... And the Yorkshire Puddings... Apart from those items... Anyone can return to the Carvery Station to add more food to their plate... So it's a no-brainer really... The Toby Carvery Roast Dinner is easily the better value for money meal overall... I'm sure that the 100 day old matured Roast Beef Joint at "Roast" was delicious... But for most people that go out to a Toby Carvery for a Roast Dinner... It's all about the price... A family of four can each have a Roast Dinner... For less than the price of just one Roast Dinner at "Roast"... When you think about the cost and effort involved in Buying... Preparing... Cooking... Serving... Washing and clearing away the dirty dishes... And the energy costs involved in cooking a Roast Dinner with all the trimmings at home... It makes a lot of sense for people to choose a Carvery Roast Dinner by eating out at a Toby Carvery.

If you don't live in London and earn professional London wages (i.e. over £100k a year) then Roast is not the sort of place you would frequent but then you're not its target market. £40 for a lunch would only be the start. We'd likely have a bottle of wine each and then end up with a £100 a head bill and that us what it is aiming for, not the guy from the Toby cutting coupons out of The Sun to get 50% off. If you're successful in London the alternatives for a decent Sunday roast are not cheap and you could drop £25+ anywhere. For 100 day aged beef (yes, it should have been medium rare and I'd have sent it back), the best roast potatoes ever and very nice vegetables, it offers something way above the Toby. But, if you are talking pure value for money for the average family, the Toby will win every time. Great reviews, thanks.

That's exactly why people should go and eat out in the first place really - to eat something you wouldn't make at home. But I'd go to Roast over Toby personally.

You really can't expect a roast joint of beef to be medium rare all the way through unless it's cooked sous-vide (which would make it sous-vide beef, not roasted beef). When you ask for medium rare you're asking for the done-ness of the meat in the center of the joint. The rest will be a gradient from your chosen doneness to well-done.

How much beef? In both places the first one looked less than 1/4lb the 2nd looked a little more. Did the 2nd allow you to refill your plate.

If you are paying a fortune for a Sunday lunch and all you come up with is 'the star is the roast potato', then you know you are ripped off. Most of what you were given would have been sent back in Yorkshire, especially that cremation called a Yorkshire pudding; a horseradish that was not hot would cause a riot. I will not mention what would happen if you were given watery gravy :)

The Roast, roast dinner looked very small. The Yorkshire pudding was burned and the beef looked as if it had been microwaved as it was stiff and patchy looking. Can only go by the looks. Strange choice of veg, never seen courgette with a Sunday lunch. Not a fan. The price was extortionate. Toby in can be a bit school dinnerish, depends on the one you choose. Rather make my own to be fair. Good review, thanks 🥴
