I have finally watched Emma. (2020) and decided to review it. It is the latest movie adaptation of the beloved novel, so naturally I was very curious! Do let me know in the comments what you thought of the movie and if you agree or disagree with my comments.

I am SO WITH YOU on the nosebleed. I was so mad. It ruined the scene - totally. I am not a huge fan of this version...the comedy scenes felt forced and artificial. It was a beautiful looking film, but I felt because it was so condensed and Emma's character was so snotty and unkind, it was hard to emotionally invest in this one. I didn't see one reason why Knightley was in love with her in this one. I agree with you on Miss Bates. It is just so hard to make a two hour version of an Austen novel. Miniseries are so much better suited. I loved the 2009 Emma. Knightley was warm and dignified, Emma was kind and loving but also but snobbish and controlling, Frank was charming, Jane was at least engaging. The Jane in 2020 looked like she was an Emo queen....dark and wooden. Thank you for this review.

Oh I'm glad I'm not alone in that! To be honest, I did feel it more lacklustre the second time I watched it. It's a shame though as I found the casting overall to be very decent. And the costumes were great as well. Just didn't quite hit the mark!

Oh yesss!! I didn’t realise you’d watched it! Cant wait to hear what your thoughts. Edit: I liked it much much more than you did, but it was interesting to hear your criticisms and in fact I agree with you on most points and yet I find I still adored this interpretation 🤣

Oh, don't get me wrong, despite my little nitpicks I still very much enjoyed it! And I'm happy you liked it too :)

I was going to wait until I checked with you whether or not there were spoilers in your review... Spoilers of one of my favourite books. A book I most definitely know the ending of... Kat's brain is tired. xD Edit: started watching, got told to watch the movie first. Yes ma'am

It does count as spoilers because they've changed a few things ^^ I'm glad you're watching the movie first! Do come back and let me know what you think afterwards! :)

I agree with your review. My husband and I watched it (well I watched it and he humoured me.) From my perspective and not reading the book, Emma's mean girl appearance does make it hard to understand why Mr.Knightly falls in love with Emma. I also don't understand why when Emma asks him to dance she mentions that they are not brother and sister. Although with the way Mr. Knightly treats her you are under the impression that he could be her older brother. As for the nose bleed and the nudity. The intention was to give humility to these characters that viewers tend to see as prim and proper. It fit well in this movie, I probably wouldn't have appreciated it as much in pride and prejudice. Thank you for your videos.

Oh, it is interesting to hear a viewer's perspective who hasn't read the book, especially since a lot of characters were so exaggerated in the movie. You're quite right, Mr Knightley does feel a bit like an older brother to Emma. And well, the nose bleeds might have had a purpose, even though I personally didn't agree with it. But that's ok! :) Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

I think Emma mentioned brother and sister because they are brother and sister in-law. As Emma’s sister and Knightley’s brother married each other. I wasn’t particularly bothered by the nosebleed too, I feel romantic climaxes can get a little saccharine and similar sometimes and in all fairness Jane Austen herself spends very little time on the happy endings and kind of wraps it up quickly so filmmakers have to get creative to make them interesting.

I wasn't a huge fan of this version, tbh. I'm in the loyal minority of people whose favorite Emma was the Kate Beckinsale version, though the Gwyneth Paltrow version is a close second. While I did love the look and costumes of this one, Emma's snobbish behavior was definitely dialed up to 11 here. Anya Taylor Joy had such a cold, remote expression throughout most of the film, and she constantly looked like she had smelled something bad. Mr. Knightley seemed quite young here, and his throwing himself dramatically to the floor seemed so moody-teenager that I found it difficult to take him seriously after that point. I did enjoy him playing his fiddle during his duet with Jane Fairfax. Emma's face during that scene was priceless! I read that Mr. Knightley's actor also did most of the singing on the soundtrack, and while there were one or two songs I quite liked, the others sounded the same to me. As for the nudity in the beginning....I'll be honest, I was quite turned off by it, mainly because there was no point to it being in the film. No other character was shown nude at any point, so why have it in?? I remember my mom arguing that there was no point to Mr. Darcy diving into a lake in only his shirt and breeches in Pride and Prejudice 1995, but it lent an extra level of hilarious awkwardness to him bumping into Elizabeth right after, since he would never have dared do so if he'd known she was nearby, and her aunt Gardiner made a funny comment about it after he'd walked away that had me rolling. Here, only the audience got to see Mr. Knightley's bare bum, so who was it for?? The nosebleed (besides being a possible anime reference?? Probably not.) only served to make me anxious about her beautiful dress being ruined, which took me out of the romance of the moment. I can only guess that Anya Taylor Joy must have gotten a legit nosebleed during the scene, but improv'd her way through it, and they just went with that take. Anyway, those were my thoughts.

About the nosebleeds, I saw in an interview that Anya Taylor-Joy gets nosebleeds a lot and that she managed to make it happen specifically for the scene. I might have been more forgiving if it was unplanned but... here we are. 😅 But I'm such a sucker for aesthetics that I was inclined to see past all that just because the movie is so pretty to look at. I did re-watch it recently though and noticed that I didn't enjoy it much apart from the visuals. So I might just stick to some well-chosen screenshots to admire in the future. It's sad, but not all adaptations can become favourites 🙂

Wonderfully pleasant. I understand the book is rather crowded with characters and in my opinion the same holds true for the film. I suspect a dedicated fan would have no problems following that though. :)

I fell in love with Anya Tailor-Joy's acting in the Queen's Gambit; and being also a rabid Jane Austen fan, I was naturally excited at the prospect of seeing her as Emma. I was sorely disappointed, though, when I found out that the story has been turned into a musical, a genre to which I am somewhat averse. I cannot believe that you never mentioned this travesty in your review! For myself, I found myself after a few minutes changing channels to PBS, where I saw a sensational documentary about the Princes in the Tower!

I honestly can't recall it being a musical, by genre definition. The story has some musical performances in the context of social gatherings, but I wasn't bothered by them (and I'm usually very sensitive to this as well). I understand however if you feel like this movie wasn't for you! As you know, I had mixed feelings on it as well.
