Reviewing EVERY Spider-Man movie has been something I've wanted to do for years. I haven't seen anything of them since they came out in theatres and in the case of this Tobey Maguire Trilogy... I haven't seen some of them in as much as 20 years.
Join me this Spidey-cember as I Totally Not Mark embark on a nostalgic trip down memory lane. Reviewing and reconnecting with the films that sculpted my childhood. Starting this week with the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy from 2002, 2004 and 2007. Will these films hold up? Will they surprise me? Let's see.

I remember when Sam Raimi apologized to the public for Spider-Man 3...That always rubbed me the wrong way, he still tried to make the best movie he could, even with the studio interference, love or hate it, one can't deny how much love went into making these films. It shouldn't be Raimi who's apologizing here.

The thing about the masks is, Spiderman canonically wears them to not only hide his identity but also make it so that the villains he face don't read into his emotions of weather he's scared or triumphant. So even though the Tobey or the Garfield suits are expressionless, it's almost like it's meant to be that way... unfortunately the audience suffers from this chase of authenticity.

People forget too even with expressionless masks on you can still "sense" emotion through body language. A good example of this is Vader in the Star Wars OT trilogy, especially in Return of the Jedi where we can sense conflict, anger and power all through body language and Maguire's Spiderman is no exception.
@MightyGladWrap
@MightyGladWrap 2 года назад
I think his whole mask rant was a bit silly to say the least. Every Spider-man mask is emotionless (aside from the eyes) in the comics as well. It has nothing to do with the firm mask or "helmet" worn in the movies. The only way to achieve what Mark wants is by completely redesigning Spidey's mask so that it shows more of his face.

I think the "emotionless" mask works better than if his emotions were clearly visible. When he's wearing the suit, we're seeing him as the civilians would, as Spiderman, the cool, friendly and strong protector of New York City. Seeing his emotions clearly behind the mask would show people how geeky, uncertain and scared he is all the time. Which makes it more powerful in the moments where you see him fighting without a mask. I pretty much agree with everything else you said and love your observations that make me respect the trilogy more than I already did.

Spider-Man pulling his punches is addressed in the comics. He should be able to knock many of these guys out in one hit, but it's a fine line between knocking them out and accidentally killing them. There's a scene where someone gets Peter's powers and goes to hit someone without realizing the sheer strength Spider-Man has and takes their jaw off their face entirely.

While that's kind of true, the thing that makes Venom in the comics a great character for people is that he isn't just "Spider-Man's dark side". If anything, the most defining thing of Eddie in recent years was how much worse his life is compared to Peter's, yet he's never alone. The Venom symbiote is there with him not for revenge anymore, but genuinely because they love each other. It's why I do believe that the Venom movies, despite the faults they have, are very good representations of the characters. Eddie Brock in the Rami movies never really gets further than "competitive douche that would do anything to win," and he doesn't really even show any hints of being a desperate man who is on his last line of support before having his life ruined until the scene where Peter reveals he's a fraud.

I agree with so much of this analysis, but I think I come from a different perspective when it comes to the suit that Tobey dons in this trilogy. I grew up on Power Rangers, mainly the original Saban era that most fans generally think is the best stretch of the series, and those helmets are completely hard, there's no way to see the facial expressions of the characters. However, those characters tended to use a lot more physical movement to show their movement (not the ridiculous head-bobbing you'd see in MMPR Seasons 1-3) sort of like what you'd see from Andrew Garfield's iteration of the character. So I don't think the problem stems from the mask not allowing for emotion to resonate through, but the lack of physical movement to help sell certain emotions.
@johnathonjackson7343
@johnathonjackson7343 2 года назад
Yeah I agree besides having a mask that's so light that you can see someone's face under it sounds good on paper but in doing it ends up with them looking like a bank robber wearing panty hose to cover their face.
@JyanDagdagan
@JyanDagdagan 2 года назад
yup, i agree w/ this.. its not the maske but the lack of movement. Andrew's spider-man nailed that part cause his body was sooo expressive that his emotions transcends w/o the need of facial expressions... Tobey's biggest asset as an actor is his expressive eyes, and having them covered w/ the mask, you could feel the lack of emotion. that's why i love it everytime his mask is torn during fights hehe.
@semekiizuio
@semekiizuio Год назад
Was thinking about this too. Not the power rangers but when someone is using a mask, it is meant to hide the face it is meant to hide emotions it is meant to hide identity. What can bring a charcter like this to life are their actions and gestures movements their every body position posture etc and that yes includes head tilts.
@runbaa9285
@runbaa9285 2 года назад
I think one of the main reasons Tobey's Spider-Man being a naturally good natured person as opposed to the comic counterpart works is that this is a movie. You have to be efficient with your characters to not bloat the runtime. While in the comics, we can get Peter's slow progression from a vengeful bully victim to a selfless person over the course of dozens of comic issues. Not a timeframe the movies could afford. Basically short-term narrative vs long-term narrative.

@@dixonb.tweenerlegs4225 yeah, but Tobey's Peter acted that way towards people who were assholes to him in the first place. Eye for an eye kind of thing. Comic Peter had a huge ego for quite a run, even butting heads with the Avengers because of his inflated ego. His power got to his head, and it was starting to affect people who weren't even assholes to him. It sounds similar on paper, but when compared side by side, Tobey's Peter and comic Peter are wholly different characters. And again, that's not a bad thing. The movies can't really depict a slow character progression because they're movies with very limited runtimes, unlike comics.

My favorite thing about the ending with Otto is the line "brilliant but lazy". Otto looked at Peter when they first met as a young man with amazing potential and wasting it by not using the intelligence that he has. After everything in the movie leading up to that point, the moment Peter takes his mask off, he almost immediately eats all of his words from their initial interaction. The boy he thought was wasting his potential was living up to it and using his gift for the good of mankind for years even if it meant sacrificing his personal life to do so
@jase276
@jase276 2 года назад
Might be reaching with that. "Brilliant but lazy" was the quote his friend, Peter's professor, used to describe Pete to him. So, when Peter reveals his identity to him, Otto regains himself from insanity and recognizes Pete by remembering that quote and realizing that Peter wasn't lazy, he was always busy because he's Spider-Man.

I disagree with the whole mask thing. A mask can't capture the feeling you were talking about without the eyes moving/ being animated. Even the artist you mentioned, while he does show the mouth, nose etc, the only reason those paintings show raw emotion is because of the eyes which are drawn in a way that can't be captured by a mask that is not animated. e.g. Tom Holland's. After all that is how masks are supposed to work, they cover your face, you are not supposed to be expressive through one, the reason the comics can do it is because you can alter the facial features such as the eyes .

The consequences of all his actions leads him to such a struggled and harsh life but in time learns why it’s necessary to go through and that life will get better. If rosemary Harris aunt may died, people would care, because she gave life advice that not only helped Peter, but some people in real life, she was a character we liked, mcu aunt may does nothing but get jokes about being a hot mom and then dies, there’s no weight behind it, theres no reason to care, it is all artificial, the weight you actually feel in that scene is just artificial, you could turn your brain off and maybe cry at that scene, but if you think about it, it’s nothing but forced. The acting is great and the score is too, the scene is well done, but it has no right to be because it is so damn bad.

In FFH she gave him advice on taking the suit just in case, and tried to always be there with him, even if they were far away. In NWH she gave him the advice of Helping all the villains, even if it cost her her life, as well as telling him that with great power there must also come great responsibility. While she did help Peter a lot, she could've been used more, as Marissa Tomie is a award winning actress and there was no reason to not give her more things in the movie. I couldn't find myself the ability to even cry at her death, yeah I cared about it, and I was kind of sad, but it wasn't sad enough to make me cry. The Raimi Trilogy ages like the finest wine. It has something for EVERYONE. Small EDIT: regarding Spider-Man not being able to knock Octavius out. First off, as many have stated, he pulls his punches because he can kill another superhuman with bare fists alone, and with ease. 2nd, I'm rather certain the arms, being an advanced AI, are able to control Octavius' pain reception and stimuli post-accident. And 3rd, they do provide him with a flexible yet firm way to efficiently roll with Peter's punches, lessening the already restrained effect. Just my 2 cents. Enjoy the movie.

Mark is such a phenomenal writer & speaker. His tones, inflections, pacing, delivery, and structure... honestly, it's all incredible. I'm not sure how you're able to write in a way that helps you remember the perfect inflection & delivery of every line, especially when your scripts get as long as this; it's almost superhuman in itself. When he speaks, he not only reminds me of the stories I've seen and/or love, but he paints them in my head again nearly as vividly as when I first watched them, sometimes to such a remarkable degree that it causes me to tear up. It's borderline magical how he's able to pull emotions out of me, when even the source material in real-time may not have done so. He's so gifted & talented, he's truly found his calling. It clearly doesn't have to be anime; Mark can talk about anything, and as long as he cares about it, or cares enough to put in the effort to ensure others have a good experience watching it, it'll be great. It happened many times with One Piece & Naruto, but it only really just hit me in this video: I could watch/listen to Mark review *anything* in depth (definitely gotta keep Editor-san & Ajay on the payroll though, they're doin God's work lol). I'm really glad you put such emphasis on the "There's a hero in all of us" speech. That has stuck with me since I first heard it and I tear up every damn time I hear those words. Although it's not directly linked to this video or these movies, I also loved the scene in Spiderverse where Miles buys the mask and asks "what if it doesn't fit?" And the store owner (of course none other than Stan Lee himself) responds "it always fits, eventually" Doesn't have the same emotionality to it but I think that's a moment that's often overlooked and carries a similar sentiment.

On the ''Knocking out Otto with a single hit'' part, there's a part in the comics where I believe it's Otto who switches bodies with Peter and becomes spider-man, Otto gets into a fight with the Scorpion while he's in Peter's body and punches Scorpion's jaw clean off because he doesn't know to hold back. That's how it's always been in the comics to my knowledge, Peter holds back enough to not break anything, but has tremendous power, even so yes he could knock out Otto in one hit but where's the fun in ending the fight in one punch in a movie unless it's a one-punch man movie.

My guess is that he doesnt want to accidentally kill Otto. So he tries to feel him out at first by starting off incredibly light and gradually amping it up from there. I imagine the same rule applies with characters like Superman, who has to be incredibly conscious of his own abilities when fighting crime (COUGH, ZACH SNYDER, COUGH COUGH) sorry, i don't know what came over me. Memes aside, Man of Steel is an alright film. I just don't like Batman V Superman, that should've been a two-part film or some shit if it was going to be that long. It would've provided a lot more room to breathe. Granted, its Zach Snyder. "Room to breathe" probably just means "slow motion" to him.

People seem to forget the opening exposition in the first film during that field trip that goes over the abilities of the spider that bite Peter. One of the abilities is that the spider can easily carry over 10x its own weight/mass. So, obviously Spider-Man can absolutely destroy a dude. And Doc Oc was just a regular guy with multiple robot arms, unlike, for example, Green Gobiin who is actually superhuman too.

What makes me intrigued about Raimi's Green Goblin more than the rest of the villains, is that through the whole trilogy, he's the only one that isn't actually wrong. Doc Ock was flawed mainly on his plans since the experiment failed, Venom's personality was leading Peter to lose everything he had and even then some without actually getting anything in return beyond self-confidence, and Sandman was doing poor choices with good intentions. But Norman was right to a certain extend, just not the exact way he predicted. You see those close to Peter looking down on him as the story keeps going, you see him losing his life for the sake of others, with little to no return, which is what makes his decission in SM2 much more understandable, and you even see Mary Jane turning her back on him after seeing that being with Peter would be too much. Had Peter and Norman actually gone along, Peter would be respected and appreciated more, only based on who he is, and MAYBE he would have managed to be a hero, but one that would also be selfish since he'd have Norman's influence. But Peter makes a HEROIC CHOICE. Not "The Right Choice", but one that defines him as a hero with a moral code, rather than just someone with power and responsability.

I think the mask being a limiting factor for conveying emotion is usually used to the writers' advantage in the climax of Spider-Man stories. There's a reason why it's so common for them to remove or tear Peter's mask in the most important battles of a lot of Spider-Man media, after all, the most compelling aspect of the hero is the struggle of the man behind the mask. We get used to see Spider-Man show emotion the best way he can through the mask, but when that is removed, the impact is much greater, and even more so if the person he's fighting is either someone Peter is attached to or someone he hates. The mask is a limiting factor, but in a certain way, it can also be used as an advantage.
@flysteel288
@flysteel288 2 года назад
I think it's important to remember that the original spiderman was drawn with that mask because it was easier than drawing the same face at 100 different angles It does detract from the actor's performance but most of the movies find ways around that in the most emotionally intense scenes

Hi, Mark! Just lemme tell you something! I was never so happy for a recommended video before... Out of all Spider-Man video essays, yours is the one that really resonated with me. Once in a while I would see some of your DBS videos or recently Berserk (my favorite manga) but seeing you review about Spidey really hit me hard and I couldn't help but come here and say some words, also subscribe to your channel a thing I hardly do since I don't spent as much time on the internet as before. To start, I am here with tears in my eyes and I want to say I feel sorry for your loss and what you've been though these past years, I too have been through a lot. My best friend and surrogate brother passed away two years ago and recently May this year my dear granny, which was more like my mom since she raised me with my aunt since I was a kid. I was lucky for seeing her one last time at the burial but couldn't stay with her at hospital due what's happening right now in this world, even tho it was pneumonia. It always left me the feeling of lack of resolve since when I was born I was also very ill and for years she stood by my side holding my hands in the hospital and I couldn't do the same. I tried so hard. And just like you I had really hard time with anxiety and all that comes together for all the hardships we went through our lives until them, although I am trying my best now. But the reason I am saying this is, I really hope you are ok and I am very thankful for such honest take and video. I love these Spider-Man movies and recently have been rewatching over and over due to their eternal message of conflict and hardship, how one should do its best despite all odds, which frankly is why the Sam Raimi trilogy always felt special to me since I was a teen. Back then I thought I knew what was hard until very recently I am facing my losses, the mistakes of the past, being and adult and not having a job for so long and feeling like the whole world is against me rising up again. Still, like many other things in this life, memories, people, videos like these, we find a glimpse of positivity, words that makes worth to fight for. This is why I find it hard to connect to new Spidey movies and comic books and I don't say that to be mean and shit on their fans and strenghts, it's just because the Raimi trilogy resonated better with me back then and much more now that life can sometimes look so tough. I look on my old pile of Spidey comic books and they helped me so much back then and their messages were so good like "The Boy that collects Spider-Man" or more "recently" 'Leah' among others that makes us feel immersed and different, more than an action flick or full cgi fun, it was just different and about your video I think you nailed it, I can see how much effort and passion you put in these videos you make but also the honesty behind your works. I can only be thankful, today I think I needed some of your words. Sorry for oversharing here and also the long essay, I am not as good as you speaking up my mind, besides, english is not even my native language. But again, I really appreciate this video and I just wanted to say your words really touched me and how I really feel by rewatching those pieces. Have a great day =)

The suits design was specifically made because of the digital cameras at the time. I don't remember the problem exactly but I believe it's because they had a problem with blurring red and blue. The third one, even if it's not as strong as the first two, is still a good movie and doesn't have nearly as many flaws as people make it out to be. It's just that its development of the villains is a bit inconclusive as full stories because there were 3 villain stories being cooked while Peter's own story was also being cooked, so kind of 4 important storylines. Sandman, Harry, the symbiote and Eddie combined as 1 storyline kinda because of how he ends up being a villain, and Peter. Even though it's not perfectly developed, it has great stories in there, it just needed to have a few more scenes of each and it would've been perfect. It's like you order 3 dishes of food and each comes with only 80% of what they should've come with. It's still a good amount, they're not small dishes enough to be too small, just needed to have a bit more on each part, but the finished product is still good even if it's not fully completed. And the stories being told were at parts good and at parts great. Sandman's was nice even though it wasn't finished, but enough for him to have a purpose so I liked him as a villain, he got the daughter thing and the uncle Ben thing, it was enough, a bit flat but he did get motivation and even backstory, and Peter forgives him knowing that he himself made many errors and hurt people and decided to just forgive him and put stuff in the past since Sandman killing Ben was not intentional. Harry was great, it's not like he needed a lot more than what he got, he got to fight Peter, confront him, be hurt by him, ended up being a villain when he fought him at night and then helped in the final fight and died. And we already had seen him in the first 2 movies so the cake was already baked well enough. The symbiote, well, with Peter it was great, it gave him power but also corrupted him, Peter had many scenes showing that so on that part it was amazing, Peter dancing and being a douche is in character with the symbiote making him be selfish and stuff, it's funny out of context but it's not a flaw of the movie or anything that makes the movie worse by any means, the audience disliking Bully Maguire is EXACTLY what Peter acting like a douche because of the symbiote should've caused and did. Then with Eddie it was great as a threat to Peter too because Venom was very powerful. The only thing missing was a bit more development for Eddie even though it wasn't really needed in the movie's context. Eddie had already been fired because of Peter, had extremely fresh resentment towards him, the symbiote got him and told him it was Peter and both of them wanted him, Eddie to destroy him and the symbiote too but it kind of wanted for Peter to be his host if possible, the thing is both wanted to hurt Peter. And about Peter, he had a lot of development in this movie too, he could've used a bit more to match what he had in the first 2 movies had there not been 3 other important plots, but it was still great because it didn't rush the symbiote making him selfish, it really had many scenes of him being like that. So I never understood the actual points of why so many people say that the third one is bad apart from: - People disliking Bully Maguire, which is actually the strongest aspect of the movie, making so many people dislike the hero's actions when they're supposed to. - The villains not having enough development as the others in movies 1 and 2. - Venom not being as great as everyone expected, which is the same as the point above this but enhanced by it being so expected to be great. - And with almost everyone saying that it's a bad movie, people will jump to that conclusion too omitting that it never reaches the "bad" level, it's a special case of the movie not having enough scenes but also not having too few to make it bad. But it was never a bad movie or anything close to that, it's just one of those pieces of art kind of buried by the "oh it's bad" comments when it's actually good overall. It was great in many ways, it was decent with others, the characters act like they're supposed to act with what happens to them in the movie, it just needed some more scenes to be really strong but it's jarring how people just ignore how the characters and stories are good and just see how there should've been more scenes or one less villain, as if the final product weren't good on its own when it is. A movie can be the weakest part of its trilogy, have problems and still be good.

@@Sub4RubsNmemes he’s a dork he’s not supposed to be naturally funny he’s more awkward than anything he was made that way by Stan lee to be more relatable to the readers. He’s the best interpretation of Spider-Man. Too many people have gotten used to snarky remarks and comedy due to Robert Downey jr perfecting the role of iron man. I did enjoy Garfield it’s just he didn’t get the credit or resources he deserved

@@killar1one Wait, you're telling me Tobey's Peter was a resentful jerk that didn't care about what happened to anyone besides his parental figures who actively attempted to ask out girls with confidence, and bantered with Flash and other people while using his newfound powers to become a stunt performer and celebrity that actively ignored a criminal because he could since 'No one will push me around anymore?' Because that's how Peter was originally. Hell, there are other things I could point out such as Peter being somewhat good looking when he acts mature, being inspired by supposed mentor figures such as Johnny Storm during an assembly where he gave a speech, or even Peter originally having intentions to join the Fantastic Four for financial reasons. Not only that, but Tobey was never able to use his specialty in science to counter his villains such as when Peter was able to put two of Doc Ock's arms out of commission by making a chemical that fused them together mid combat.

Rosemary Harris' performance as May is honestly one of if not my favourite part of these films. And in Spider-Man 2, During her Speech to Peter about there being a Hero in everyone... I think it's safe to say she KNOWS He's spider-man. or, at that moment, *was* Spider-man, but gave up. She knows he quit, she senses his troubles. and she offers the best advice that anyone could give to him in his lowest point. And While it's never explicitly stated that she ever knew, it's pretty clear now that we think about it, about what SHE'S learned about him, such as his part in Ben's death. And she not only Forgives him, but CONTINUES to do her best to elevate him in spite of that. And it works.

Yup I found the right channel for sure, I can see why you are so crushed by everything going on. You and your team definitely put alot of thought, effort and ultimately work into your videos👌🏼 honestly truly a great interpretation of the films, I even cried on the heartfelt parts you explained of each movie👏🏼 well done Growing up I looked to MOVIES in general as an escape from my life's harsh reality and I loved the feeling of getting caught up in films and imagining them as real life. When I could completely get lost in a movie in the sense of loving every aspect to the point that I'm not even thinking of it as a movie anymore but an alternate reality that I just visited, that's when I feel a movie has done its job and these Spider-Man movies growing up did that for me, Tobey Maguire I feel personally will always be thee best version of Spider-Man. I could be biased cause its what I grew up with but I truly got to relive those feels as I watched your review on these movies and discover new feels that these movies now give me as a more understanding adult of deeper meanings. Again well done and Stay blessed🙏🏼 ALOHA🤙🏼

The Birth Of Sandman in Spider-Man 3 was one of the most awe inspiring thing I saw. Everything from the moment the first sand pebble starts forming him losing his form for a second only for him to bring himself back together again including the soundtrack Jesus it’s so damn beautiful.

I'm sure you already have it planned, but please include "Into the Spider-Verse" in this series. Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, and all of the other Spiders in that film gave fantastic performances and really explored "what it means to be Spider-Man".

And offered what I consider to be a much better origin story for Miles. Which is surprising given that usually thrusting a rookie character into such a major world ending mess right off the bat is a big risk that more often than not doesn't pay off. But they managed to actually nail it like the romans on that one

I clearly can recollect being 9, in the theatre having the time of my life watching Spider-Man 3. It was amazing. And I remember when Peter slapped MJ even as a kid I was speechless because it went against every thing I knew that Peter was. And it got me to realize how low he had gotten. I didn’t know anything about Venom and so to me I liked Spider-Man’s cool black suit and how it made him strong and more confident. Then seeing his slow descent into that moment and then the immediate scene after of Peter at the bell tower….damn I was totally immersed. This movie is the bomb.

This is what I like to see, I loved Spidey 3 in theaters and I love it to this day. It was much simpler than the first two but it's a comic book movie. To me, seeing sandman's origin was kinda redundant because as soon as I saw the stripes, I knew him personally. Same with venom, it can be seen as bad writing or intentionally simple for smaller kids

6:07 While I do think the mask design philosophy is a fair critique, as it is an inherent issue when transferring the facial expressions of a dude wearing a mask from comics to live action, the Spidey mask in live action works because you can't tell who's supposed to be in the mask. Unlike other Marvel heroes who either don't care about hiding their identities or would like the whole world to know who they are under the mask like your Iron Mans, your Doctor Stranges, your Guardians of the Galaxy, and so on; Spidey has always been a character where no matter which incarnation or universe the Spidey comes from, the mask is always a blank slate for whatever that version of Spidey is as a person underneath the title of being a Spider-Man. "Anybody can wear the mask", as a certain animated film about a Spider-Verse would like to say. Which was an aspect of Spider-Man as a general character that I feel like wasn't really brought up when addressing the mask issue as much as it was an issue for Peter being the only Spider-Man to exist within the three live action universes

Toby was the best Peter Parker and those movies were, for the time, the best comic book movies ever. Now, Tom's Spiderman movies are basically the best super hero movies ever, but TM is and will always be the GOAT.
