Personally I intend to use my historical miniatures as levies. 40 models for $30ish, collected over decades, my allied Russian Napoleonics marching to their inevitable doom alongside their Astartes betters
My initial thought. Especially how much the Book stresses that the militia guys are prtobably wearing things like chainmail or carrying muskets to battle.
I think the miltia is a great doc. As someone who uses panotica I look forward to them adding the obviously missing models such as (bad) versions of vylkaries and an assault transport. I also think going for the grenadier squads with +1 BS skill and allowing them to be non support is the way to run this army without needing to sell your house.
I really like the 3rd line rule they added in, honestly gives a good pattern for how to either home brew something using an existing profile, or some guidelines to follow when making something new
The reason that special weapons are arbitrarily restricted is simple: GW is basing the wargear options off of what’s in the new cadian box. This is a common thing in 9th ed rules finding its way over to heresy. Why? Because Emperor forbid that people just buy multiple copies on the box or *gasp* third party parts.
levi squads w baoynets mean s4 attacks, put a force comander with ruthless tyrant to force pass morale chekcs, and unending horde for a 50% chance to get the squad back in reserves, bonus if you combine it with something like feral wariors, abhuman muster, or alchem jackers or any other mele province
It's fun and fluffy, but where the rules were adjusted it's 100% nerf - no power armour grenadiers - barrage/blasts are mostly garbage, no dedicated transports - so you're wasting slots on those. The way the game works now it basically funnels you into lascannon spam if you want to be even mildly competitive. I get that Militia is a rule of cool army, but I am annoyed that there was no thought given to options to buff artillery or tanks via a tank commander or orders, special ammunition etc that could have given at least some option for taking on terminators, etc
yeah I'm especially annoyed about no Chimera and no dedicated transports, although I had been wanting a reason to buy a ridgehauler. I would've liked to see a rockgrinder in there too maybe.
@Superstitious Peasant well they have to sell the latest model so that's the only one we get. I think rhinos are also a pick but that's also a new model.
I am thinking of making an army of these guys (small one to start) lots of great options of there in terms of minis be it third party, GW or printed stuff :-)
I think a majority of problems you have can be chalked up to the models not existing anymore. Forgeworld axed a ton of its catalog for this type of army and sadly we lost a tone of flavor
@@sagacity1071 from my knowledge, Hellguns weren't used in the Heresy because all known patterns are post-Heresy. Valkyries i don't know too much about outside of a reddit thread saying they were used during the Heresy.
I am sad you can't combine Warrior Elite with the increased BS AND the weapons of Old Night. Survivors of the Dark Age with allowing land Raiders, Power Armour as well as those S4 CC weapons and S5 Laslocks was a fun army theoretically. I liked the idea of a non imperial society that was either fighting for the warmaster or only recently assimilated producing actually worthwile soldiers as written about in some of the black book entries.
As a milita player that has covered my half of the board in models, you usually don’t move much. Or more precisely you will only move a select few units. Most are either back holding objectives or stationary weapons platforms. Even tanks have reduced mobility due to all the infantry in the way.
Marcherlord Squats+armoury of the dark age with gorgon transports full of full volkite packing grandiers with rapier batterys. Medics actually useful as they are t4.and the lord of the army will be t4 with battle hardened
wish we had more vehicle variety but i am happy with the infantry variants especially with provedences, favorite combos would have to be "Abhuman muster+feral woriors" for an all mele army, "unending horde + alchem jackers" for bayonet charging levi squads into fire supported by vehicles, and "legacy of the great crusade+armory of old night" for 10 man grenadier squads with volkite chargers and culverins for 110 points at bs4 as a glass cannon eliete force Ruthless tyrant is a great warlord trait if your running levi squads, 12" aura of blaming where he can force pass morale checks for 50 man squads is absolutely something ime going to try with blobs of 100+ load em up on frenzon give em bayonets and unending horde for when the squad finally does get destroyed 3d printing is going to be a must though, and i do wish there was a way to bring more special weapons
I really liked the way they did militia. I have some minor quibbles with some things, of course, but it seems to well represent a rag tag band of half trained men at arms fighting in a conflict they are entirely unprepared and unequipped for.
The legiones astartes legacy pdf was way worst, but yeah, there are serious issues here and there. let's hope an errata and also a legacy pdf with the missing units will come for this too.
If you wanna spam levys you gitta use chaos mauraders from sigmar, they're about the same price a 40k 10-12 box but come in boxes of 20 and although they lack lasguns they are thematically appropriate for a giant horde of militia Also as a time saver, movement trays, get some, instead of moving 50 guys moving 5 trays makes your life so much easier. You can also deploy by just putting the trays down and then fill them up during the first turn
I am tempted to make a Conquistador aesthetics army, that sounds fun. a silly idea to cope with hordes of Levies: using Warhammer fantasy inspired trays and have them move like a huge block. I guess that makes the blast weapons stronger against them though °J°
It may be interesting if there was a way to get a discount on tanks if they are brought in numbers through a provenance. Like buy 3 or more get 10-20 points off each in that squad adjusted per vehicle type of course.
Ya know while I generally think the ap nerfs on templates I will say if the scorpius can get 4+ rending while being as cheap as it is then alot of other artillery weapons could do with 5+ rend / breaching at the least so it's still a nerf but atleast shows off those guys who get directly hit by artillery rather than just the shrapnel.
alot of issues ive found in my local group or talking about certain units/subfactions in terms of how good or useful they are is often directly relate to the WS 'chart' change
I think they made all these stats and rules for fluff reasons. Cause the Militia lore wise are just make shift armies. But I also think they didn’t want people to play this instead of the Solar army
Something to bear in mind when reviewing this list is that whilst the on paper options are limited the rules explicitly are designed for you to use different models than what is listed in the army list, so whilst a single baneblade variant has rules all variants could be fielded model wise. And whilst Guard was the original template the ruleset is designed so you can field whatever models you like so I understand why the list isn'r full of IG units bc they didn't want to make it so you had to (or felt like you had to) use guard models. They definitely compromised the competitiveness of the list in order to give narrative/thematic feel to it. I think there's also a feeling of not wanting to put too much time balancing an army they aren't going to sell any books for, and not a lot of people will actually play. However, some rules to cover artillery tanks would've been appreciated and maybe anityer flyer option. And I do understand the desire for this to be competitive/viable people have spent time building these armies over the last god knows how many years and waited so long to finally get their 2.0 ruleset and they should be respected. But for me, this army has always been for the type of person who would play a heresy army against a 40k army back in 6th/7th even though they were underpowdered bc they love the fluff/lore. This ruleset really leans into the customisation and personalisation and the casual side to heresy rather than the competive side and I love that but other people might not and thats okay
I think the best way to play militia is really vs other militia or solar. Against anything else it’s more a case of delaying the opponent from winning as long as possible.
they basically said in the interview that it's an Oldhammer cultist army. And playing those armies in 2nd ed 40k/3rd ed they were never designed to be competitive, more for narrative and they play best against other similar armies. I'm trying not to think of this list competitively because it just makes me annoyed. Fluff wise I have a few good army ideas
I kinda want to point out as well that the reason the Militia doesn't get a lot of better vehicles or the ones they do have are so slapdash is because...they are. Its a militia. Its the denizens of some backwater planet who have been told to pick up their arses and defend themselves. Its not a formal military like the Imperial Army, its Bud and Jed and Jeb and their old smell canid getting some of the boys together. If they're lucky enough, Old Lady Maggers might have her trucks up and running. All the better gear was probably taken for the Imperial Army or Horus' forces demanded them.
Can you do a how to build a legion video but with this and the suggested providence's youd use similar to that of how to build a world leader legion etc as well as they compare contrast to the solar auxilia
If anyone wants to run hordes of Militia, take this advice from an AoS Skaven player: DON'T. If you are dead set on painting the 200+ infantry that I have too, batch painting is life, and movement trays are a must. Even as I take only 60 Clanrats in 1k points, I still use movement trays for them.
I've been looking into 30k for awhile, but I still cannot justify spending the money on stuff that isn't plastic (and let's be real, we all wanna play the legion specific stuff). But I might just play the militia because I can run pretty much any models I want so long as people get the idea.
i wanna get your opinion on having Ogryn's running dual chainaxes (with the feral provinence) because its somethign to the tune of 61 S6 shred attacks at WS 4 on the charge
Just saying Warlord games sells historical minis in 28mm for a reasonabkle price(24 napoleonic soldiers for 28 pounds) mix that with 3D printing for adding that 30k flavor and thats gives you at least a chance to do the army......that or straight up 3D print it whole
Wargames Atlantic is also an option. Useing the cannon fodder box with the 10 box deal you get 300 models already equipped with lasguns for 265 usd (less than half the cost of warlord games stuff at 560 usd for 300)
@@matthiuskoenig3378or get the Prussian Reserves for 600 models at $265. Throw waves of guys in line formations into the enemy and laugh like a mad man.
You must really get lucky with your opponents concussive tests, you are so confident all those marines are gonna be ws 3... For real though just swapping those 3 inch blasts for 5 inch would be a massive help. The demolisher having the same blast as a frag grenade from a grenade launcher just blows my mind. Maddest thing in the points costs for me is the fire support squad. 5 space marines with heavy bolters at bs 4 - 100pts, 5 militia heavy bolters at bs 3 - 150pts. OK the militia have double the wounds but worse toughness, worse save and removed from table if fail a test on their worse leadership more than cancels that out. Things like the Vanquisher being just flat out better than the Gravis lascannon because they forgot the Sol Aux LR has 2 Gravis Lascannon and that's why it costs the same or the Caiman being flat out better because they forgot the sisters of silence beast handler has light and fleet to make the other beasts useful are just so predictable when they copy paste stuff.
I never looked at the weapons list for 2.0 till now.... *holy heck* WTF were they thinking! They jumbled up the weapon stats in a nonsensical way. Why is the Vanquisher now an autocannon? The Baneblade Cannon was quite OP yes [likely to sell the kit], but instead of a nerf it got a castration! 3" blast for a Demolisher Cannon? Tanks can't kill Power Armor anymore. And apparently, Contemptors too. Gravis is a swear word.
It's painful to look through. I had saved up for four Dracosian for my Solar Auxilia but when I saw how nerfed they were I passed. GW don't you want to sell models? It's the same with other tanks that I had planned on buying. They aren't worth the points so why waste my money on something I won't use? My IG stopped using tanks in 7th ed because there was so much Grav weapons going around that they were just free points for my friends. Here they just won't kill enough to earn back their points.
Pretty meh rules as per usual from Gdubbs, only real viable and somewhat playtime/money efficient competitive list is an industrial stronghold russ spam list with executioner pie plates and a couple vanquishers for anti tank. Quite sad that they probably had one dude write this up in a weekend and ship it with these half baked rules
A wonderful pdf for creating a weird and wondrous allied command to be integrated in your legion army and letting your modeling imagination run wild. Not a good list for competitive gaming.
- Macharius would never appear in HH. It was made in M41. - Forward Ordinance Batteries are incredibly overcosted in regular 40k as well. Needs to be cheaper or better. - Infantry Squads definitely need 1 special weapon for every 10. That matches historical datasheets. - Command Squads is weird they were always every model could take a special weapon. - Grenadiers were always 2 special weapons. - Lack of vehicle options is definitely disappointing. - AP changes is also the biggest disappointment.
