@@blackmephistopheles2273 pyrite is extremely weak though isn’t it?
@carsonrush3352
@carsonrush3352 2 года назад
@@sparkthefloofyprotogen3556, minerals are typically ceramics (rock) and as a group of materials, they are almost uniformly brittle. It's extremely unusual to find a non-brittle ceramic and it almost always takes special processing or composite crafting to use them in functions that require non-brittle materials. To better describe what "brittle" means, you need to understand the difference between the mechanical terms of "strength" and "toughness". Strength is how inelastic a material is, requiring more force to stretch or compress. Plastic is weak, metal is pretty strong, and ceramics are often extremely strong (generally speaking). Toughness is how much warping a material can withstand before failing. Plastics are very tough compared to their strength, metals are extremely tough in general, and ceramics are not tough at all (aka brittle). So with those terms in mind, pyrite is moderately strong, but brittle like other ceramics. If it was applied to the outside of a tool that is needed for tough and strong work (like a sword), then it could withstand the first few blows, but it would begin chipping off your sword pretty quickly with every additional use. Now, if you're looking for a strong, golden metal, then I would point you at the copper-beryllium alloy, which if memory serves has the same strength as stainless steel but with exceptional corrosion resistance. If you're looking for a metal that could feasibly replace titanium as a cheap alternative with nearly the same properties, then I would point you to the new ductile steel-aluminum alloy. Historically, this alloy has been known for being as strong and light as titanium at 1/10th the price... but brittle (a fatal flaw). However, a university recently discovered that with the addition of about 23% various trace metals it avoids the brittle phases and compounds, and retains its ductility and flexibility. Now it just needs a new surface layer that improves its corrosion resistance and we'll have an industry-disrupting material. For instance, every car could get over 100 mpg with this kind of building material.

Some of the stuff that inspired Shad is Brandon Sanderson's works, so Mistborn or the Stormlight Archives, The Wheel of Time (which is narrated by the same people, I'm going through it now and they did an awesome job!), and of course, the grandfather of it all, Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. I would just encourage you to keep going after you finish Shad's book. There are so many wonderful stories that have yet to be adapted and you can only get by reading or listening to them. Either way, happy to hear a new person is enjoying the medium. Cheers!

Understandable. I also used to dislike reading. I got into reading more with visual novels while I was off work with an injury. They were the only games I could play in bed and put down any time. I like anime so I transferred to manga and light novels. Shadow of the Conqueror was my first audiobook and that was my gateway into longer novels like Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. I find I comprehend some words better when I hear them and the informal writing in light novels is much more comprehensible to me while reading. In the latter case I read much faster so its less of a chore and I dont stop to reread a sentence or two to understand it. You may be the same in this regard.

"I WANT THAT!" - Shirou Emiya, Fate/Stay Night UBW:A Depending on the setting, mithril/mithral can have a blue-ish tint to it. It could also be explained by simply stating, that the blade was blued/treated to have this color. On another note, I'm listening to the SotC audiobook at the moment, while painting tabletop minis, and had a thought concerning the darkstone spike shooter (sorry, I can't remember its proper name). In the story, they're ineffective against shades, because they cause piercing damage. Wouldn't it be possible to give them kind of V-shaped tips, similar to the ones used to hunt small birds, but sharpened? Cause in my mind, that would work like "shooting a guillotineblade at someone". Well, probably a stupid thing, but it'd interest me nonetheless.

There are practical examples of something similar in spanish rapiers in XVII c, the hilt used to have son curly extensions - indeed one of the images in the video shows this curly extensions, sorry don't recall the word in english for these extensions .- they are meant to trap the opponents blade, in fact, in the "verdadera destreza" (spanish swordmanship style) there are movements, meant to trap the blade with the hilt, rotate the blade and advance and pierce the oponent in the neck (very similar to the movement that you are practising) as this swordmanship style was focused on a higher reach and precise movement to disarm and attack the oponent making the most of the sword reach and body angles.

Not that my opinion matters much or anything, but I've always found that the less intricate, and more simplified designs are the best. Even among fantasy settings, too many ornamental features, or weird scallops in the blade geometry are instantaneous turn-offs to me, to the point where I sometimes find it difficult to get invested in certain video games with the more ridiculous sword designs. But with that said, I find this Imperious design pretty appealing, overall. It has a somewhat... "Master Sword" vibe to it, which is possibly one of the more functional fantasy weapons in pop culture history.

As someone who watches a lot of anime, I feel like I’ve seen sooooo many ridiculous, over the top designs… but not only did you make a functional fantasy sword, it looks even cooler than most swords I’ve seen in fiction! Great work, I’m really excited for the short film!

I do want to go into a bit of a tangent. Imperious has a few things working against it for me personally, the first one being that it's colored blue. None of my larp costumes have colors that do compliment the color blue. Second is the sun iconography, as most of my characters are themed around things like the moon, ice, darkness or wolves you can pretty much see that sun theming is pretty far from what most of my characters are about. So when I say I am going to purchase Imperious anyway you can take that as very high praise. Because despite the fact that Imperious goes against my aestethic completely I still think it's an incredible sword that I just must have! Firstly I love it's proportions. I am a arming sword guy nowadays (Mostly because I use shields), but I used to use two handed longswords. And despite the fact that I do enjoy one handed swords more I do still miss the reach I used to have with a long sword on occasion. So when you come to me with a one handed sword that has a blade as long as a two handed sword and it still handles well? I am honestly sold! The proportions just do it for me. Secondly the blade shape looks amazing, it just is beyond perfect. It does also hit me that considering larp weapons are made of latex they don't necessarily have the same limitations as real weapons, so theoretically you can do a bit more fantastical weapon designs. And I do hope to see more experimental weapon designs like Imperious in the future! Though a few extra colors to pick between for the blade of Imperious would be really cool >w

You can have a partner use Imperious with the background of being a former enemy to you but y’all have become allies (possibly reluctantly). That way you can keep your aesthetic and build some mythos to rocking with someone with the opposite aesthetic. Or you could give it to a lady friend and model yourselves as warrior priests to the sun and moon gods.

What about a carbon fiber blade? Still can't get down to 1mil thickness without a lot of flex, but 1.5 to 2mil would be plenty strong for LARPing. Also, carbon fiber makes an absolutely beautiful sound when "rapped" upon (like a bell tolling).
@KoenvanGorpAstronomy
@KoenvanGorpAstronomy 2 года назад
I have custom made LARP swords with carbon cores. At 105 cm length, such a weapon with a core thinner than 6mm becomes a floppy noodle. 6mm is safe but flexes a lot, 7mm is the sweet spot. 8mm is rigid enough to parry heavy LARP lances. A 2mm carbon fibre blade might have some rigidity in the plane of the blade, but it will be very floppy in the other. A carbon fiber blade as you suggest will never be LARP safe either. They will end up shattering when repeatedly impacting another carbon fibre blade, sending bits of carbon fibre all around. And they are hard and will hurt badly when impacting unprotected targets.

A more accurate term would probably be mortuary sword or maybe Schiavona for that design, but it's not too pushing the realms of design in real life except for the width of the blade. Going common sense design, probably want to max out at 36" length blade (also so you can uncross if you had an off hand piece of kit) and make it not enormously wide , drop the sticking out spikes to be studs on the guard so you don't get them stuck in people (including yourself), and it's perfectly functional in the real world. Also, the reason it's more controllable one handed is you've got a ricasso ring as part of the hilt design, like a rapier, so you've got far more fine control than a hammer grip. Think you'll find if you put a finger over cross of your two sword, it'll become far more dexterous in your hand.
@anthonylamonica8301

Alternatively, you could just round off the tips of the conical "sun rays" to make them a bit safer. It will have the added benefit of making them lighter, but just as functional as before.

Honestly, you can easily explain why the blade is blue in any other fantasy setting, it’s infused and forged with pure magic power of course. Clearly it is a sword meant for mages and sorcerers due to being supper light and strong, so they can wield it with ease without hampering their spell casting. That is a cool looking one hander and I think it looks good in both blue and steel alike, really awesome that it’s obtainable now.

I don't necessarily see a LARP sword injuring someone as the sword being dangerous. I see it as the people involved using it dangerously. It disturbs me that people are calling on products to enable them to escape injury even when they are knowingly behaving dangerously with those items. This seems irresponsible. We should stress safe behavior first and foremost, rather than depending on swords to be crutches that indulge and facilitate our foolishness. But those are tiffs with organized LARP. Calamacil aced this project. I'm --tempting-- tempted to ask for custom products from them in the future, in fact.

The entire point of LARP toys is to act in ways that are usually deadly, without getting hurt, because the toys absorb the forces. Thus a LARP toy that can cause hurt is contrary to it's purpose and it's basic promise to users.
@buttmunchmcnugget328
@buttmunchmcnugget328 2 года назад
But with enough intent behimd the user it could still be used to hurt someone, even if it couldnt do so in a mortally wounding way. It is still a weapon and the user is in control of it.
