If you picture your ultimate man cave, chances are it features a projector, right?
Every time I've done a major home theater or TV update, I've always considered whether a projector was potentially a better option, yet every time, the typical pitfalls such as poor contrast ratio, input lag and low refresh rates have ultimately pushed me back towards conventional display panels.
So when BenQ reached out and asked if I'd like to try our their new 4K "Gaming Projector", which is essentially marketed as being good at all the things projectors have historically sucked at, I said SURE!
So let's find out whether a "gaming projector" is a worthwhile consideration for your next setup!

I remember years ago seeing some tear drop shaped canopy screen for sim racing, where you would basically sit inside of it and the projector would shoot from the rear, giving about a 180 degree field of view as you sat in it. Would be neat to see a modern 4k projector with such a device today!

When you said "the aim is to not having any keystone" and "you can't run keystone in game mode", what does it mean? Does it mean with auto keystone on, it increase input lag? Another question for you is how to achieve zero keystone installation? Do we do it by adjusting the projector so that the zero offsets are needed to achieve perfect keystone? To achieve best gaming experience, should we have zero keystone and perfect keystone, or none zero keystone offsets, while turning auto keystone off? Thanks and please iexcuse my newbie questions.

We replaced our TV with a 1080p projector about 10 years ago and ran that for about 8 years... One of the things that we really loved about it was that there is no reflection of light sources from you house in the "screen" this is something that I really struggle with accepting on our LG 4K TV. But yes input lag and refresh rates are really important. I just wish that there was a projector for home theater/ gaming 8K/4K laser HDR, HLG, HDR+, and HDR10 projector that would run 4K at 120Hz and 1440p at 144Hz with low input lag 🙏

When I first built my game room 6 years ago I got a projector and a 132" screen and it was great, but it was always lacking the "POP" you get, especially in games, from a backlit TV screen. Once OLED Tv's came out and you get to see True blacks it makes the graphical "POP" even more noticeable. I now have my OLED on a rolling stand that I place in front of the projector screen and only use the projector when I have a movie night with a large number of friends. Gaming on a large screen is awesome, but for me the "POP" of the graphics made me prefer the OLED over the projector.

My problem with projectors has always been that to get close to a TVs image quality you need a well optimized room. Frankly it's just much less hassle to move my couch closer to the TV. If I could build a house with a dedicated theater room, then I'd probably get a nice projector
@boostedmedia

@ramsaybolton9151
@ramsaybolton9151 2 года назад
yes but you don't get insane eye damage from sitting 3 feet away as your retinas are burned from the modern panels.
@Erowens98
@Erowens98 2 года назад
@@ramsaybolton9151pretty sure that's a myth. At worst, staring at a screen for extended periods of time causes temporary eye strain as you blink less frequently. Eyes can indeed be damaged by bright lights. However, most TVs and monitors don't get anywhere near this brightness. To damage the eyes, something like a bright industrial light is required. So around 4000+ lux. Even a bright TV (1000 nits) will only emit around 3100 lux. Most TVs only emit 250-600 nits. And that is only in highlights for a few particularly bright scenes. Most HDR movies sit around 300-600 for the majority of scenes on a high end HDR TV. Which equates to 1200-2000 lux. Also worth note, your eyes are gonna start hurting far before they experience permanent damage. It's your bodies natural warning to stop.
@ramsaybolton9151
@ramsaybolton9151 2 года назад
@@Erowens98 it's not a myth. You can look it up, every medical journal acknowledges that blue light from common sources such as monitors, T.V and cellphones WILL damage your eyes overtime. You are essentially staring into small suns instead of getting blue light from refraction off surfaces like you would in a world without screens. Projectors and CRT are much safer. CRT glass is thick and coated, the image is shooting onto the coated glass and barely out of it unlike all modern screens which basically beam your eyes with light bulbs.
@Erowens98
@Erowens98 2 года назад
@@ramsaybolton9151 please link these medical studies you reference. The only ones I've seen, are regarding intense artificial light sources, such a industrial lighting which are far brighter than even exceptional TVs. And thus far every source I've seen has explicitly claimed that a TV will not damage your eyes. "you're essentially staring into a small sun" you know, except for the fact that the sun is orders of magnitude brighter and especially emits light along the UV spectrums. But you know, it's still essentially the same thing. Totally. Reflected sunlight in the real world absolutely can damage your eyes. Reflection doesn't prevent it in any way. Which is why you need sunglasses on a snow field or calm lake on a sunny day. If a CRT is emitting the same intensity of light as an LCD. It will have the same effect. Having thick glass only reduces the potential intensity. It does not make light of the same intensity less harmful.

@@boostedmedia oh man really. I must admit there is a reason why I hate people in general. All those haters and internet rambos running their mouth over content creators like you and those big tech tubers like linus, Jay, Steve and so on have no idea how much work and effort it costs to create videos like yours and to run a business of a volitaile platform like RU-vid. They only see "oh will got 3090. Will is asshole because he got gift. Will is bad person need to run my mouth" Ij my eyes it would be a great video to see how the 3090 performs in comparison to the 2080ti and what settings you're now running on all those various games. I mean supplys are getting up at the moment Quickly and prices drop drastically. Had the first offers of Asus tuf 3080`s the last days from 809 - 1000€ wich is pretty much msrp. Other models are in stock for days so I think its over soon and I hope you will bring a video of all that

@@boostedmedia yeah but I think jealousy just blinds people's mind. I've gotten myself a 3070xc3 ultra back then to at least can bump up video quality for streams a little and it was a hassle to play the f5 game to be lucky to get one. Yesterday finally got my hands on the 3080ti ftw3 ultra for +180 Euro retail from evga so iam happy to get it next week. I will do some benchmark video then and was curious if it is really only that 5-8% off of a 3090 in terms of performance and was looking for your graphical settings because I think you're not one of those guys who posts a short snippet of the settings and then lower them to get better results in the benchmarks to present them in a video.

I try to find a date for when this video was produced. I looked at the BenQ and quite a few others that were thousands of dollars more and what I settled on was the AWOL VISION 3500 I'm using my PlayStation five on a fanatec Sim rig and there is zero delay, and I'm not in game mode and I'm not in turbo mode, if I set my AWOL VISION 3500 to turbo mode I get 9 ms of lag. It is literally as fast or faster than my PlayStation five as it is I don't even bother switching it in the game mode. It plays just fine but if you really want that extra speed turbo mode will give it to you you're talking about Sam and he's been gaming his entire life and I'm 70 years old got tired and wearing out TVs. I have 120 inch screen although the 3500 is capable of producing 150 inch screen with an L our vivid storm floor rising screen, so having compared all of them myself personally the bank you was nowhere near as fast as the AWOL VISION 3500 in turbo mode maybe they'll send you one to test out. If you can handle the somewhat longer throw distances of the UHD35/38 (for $100 more get the UHD38) the Optima UHD35/38 equal the BenQ as a gaming monitor but exceed it slightly as a Home Theater TV with more maximum light output (4000 instead of only 3000) plus slightly better black levels plus slightly better colors plus slightly better sharpness of the picture. So yeah, I'll be picking up the UHD38 this Black Friday!

As mentioned in the video, I specifically asked about this and was told “you don’t need a screen, a white wall is fine”. So that’s how we showed it. If you want to invest in a screen to improve the experience further that’s of course fine.

@@boostedmedia Well, its the exact same thing as saying you dont NEED tires on your Ferrari to run it. You can just place it on some old rocks and rev the hell out of it. Just as well. Without a good quality screen, a projector of any decent quality is pretty close to useless. Take it from someone who has been building home cinemas for ages… :-)

I’m not disagreeing. We test under the same conditions they recommend to buyers. If they’re telling people they don’t need a screen, then we test without a screen otherwise the review isn’t indicative of the normal user experience.

Claim? I’m running 240Hz without issue as shown in the video.
