Revisiting Le Mans 24 Hours [PS2]

Le Mans Ultimate came out earlier this year to a mixed reception. Regardless I was jealous. I love a Le Mans game, and my PC does not have the facilities for that big man.
Fortunately I'm still exploring Le Mans 24 Hours for the PS2. In this video I have my second attempt at trying to achieve a GT class win!

I like how at 20:22 you can see the other cars brakes are super hot. That’s a neat touch for a PS2 game.

With the exception of the nuclear headlights it looks really cool, although I get what they were going for. Love the day to night transition and the soft focus effect at night.

It amazes me all the time how you are able to run all these different racing games (semi) competitively! At least I got the left turns figured out😂

Great to revisit this, like I said before I'm a big fan of this version! For your straight-line speed, try just riding your revs alllllll the way up in 4th or 5th gear before you shift. Like all the way in the Red and keep it floored. If i remember right, you'd be faster sometimes not even shifting into 6th!... buuttttt I guess it could be considered shady since you'd blow up in real life doing that 😂 Can't remember if it worked on GT cars. But definitely worked on prototypes.

I'm enjoying it more every time I boot it up! Well there's no engine failures in the game (as far as I'm aware) so seems fair enough to me! 😂 I'll give that a go next time.

Maybe a little downforce could help in some corners, but your pitstop strategy worked. I was recently playing this game on the dreamcast emulator and it's really good, I saw your video and now I want to play the PS2 version , seems to have more stuff. I can't play with some assists because I'm a bit stupid and spin around a lot of corners. This is really a solid game with fun AI and good physics

Yeah the car was not happy through some corners - may need to change strategies next time. That's interesting, so they're slightly different between versions? Agreed, this is a great game. Car feels planted and behaves believably, it's good fun!

No, we don't have LeMans Ultimate at home, THEY have LeMans 24 Hours at home. The one stop worked pretty damn well considering your start and finish position, solid job. Even managed to outrun a nuclear blast while at it. I have my doubts over the Sprint engine being able to run a 1 stop strategy. It can be tested though. It might give us another funny "out of fuel" DNF which Alesi would be proud of. Judging by those lap times I'm certain that the AIs are using softs, which makes the 2 stop a must. Otherwise ... *shrugs*

That's an excellent way of putting it. 😂 If I go Sprint engine and softs I'm probably going to have to mirror their 2-stop and hope it makes me quick enough to compete. Or do the Alesi/Australia homage. 😅

A tip from experience playing this game (although it was the PC version): NEVER put the gearbox into the "Top Speed" setting. There is no track in the game where you can fully utilize such long gear ratios. At most, you should use the "Balanced" (or whatever the middle setting is called) gearbox setting for any tracks with long straights. You might hit the rev limiter when slip streaming, but the acceleration and top speed in normal circumstances (and thus the lap time as well) will be much better.

I think you've just cracked it for me. That makes a lot of sense. I wondered why the car was struggling so much to reach top speed down the Mulsanne Straight (I wasn't even reaching top revs in 4th and 5th) and in normal circumstances the "Top Speed" gear ratio on the track with the longest straights in the game would make total sense. But what you're saying would explain why I'm still slow in a straight line even with the lowest downforce setting - "Top Speed" is pants. Filming the next attempt this weekend, so I will definitely be trying that, thanks!

Bring on Petit Le Mans. I'd like to see you try Le Mans in a Viper. Maybe Belmondo Racing rather than Oreca.

I'll definitely do a Petit Le Mans soon! I also can't believe the Viper is rated as slower than the Porsche in this game. I'd definitely have to go Sprint engine with the Viper.

@@TheOutsideLine Is it really? I missed that. I just remember Belmondo Racing from the FIA GT championship from back then, which I used to watch regularly. It was the Eurosport Super Racing Weekend and they had joint weekends with the ETCC. Lister Storms, Vipers, 911s, Ferrari 550s. Great days.

Yeah watching back it was really struggling through the corners. The problem is it will make me even slower in a straight line. Considering the softs and/or Sprint engine for next time to counteract it.

I've had another comment saying that the "Top Speed" gear ratio is also pants, so gonna test that out too.
