As I mention in the video, this was a little detour in part because I figured it'd be fun to be nostalgic and/or cringe at early Bolt, and share any behind-the-scenes tidbits that I couldn't work into the proper R&C Retrospective saga, or elaborate on some common questions/thoughts/et cetera. Regularly scheduled TGB programming will resume next week! I've got a bunch of stuff I've either had to sit on throughout the last couple weeks due to back-end issues, or that I've been working on in the mean time while a couple projects have been in limbo; I'm talking 2-3 long-form docuspectives in production, some medium-length ones I'm planning to hit in between those, and hopefully I'll be able to start my next proper retrospective saga in May as well! I appreciate your patience, and I'm *very* ready to kick back into gear after a frustrating month with limited uploads for you all to enjoy!
I always liked your videos but I gotta say the obvious. The Uselesspodcast was a extremely valuable resource for you. It's a shame not many people know of it. I recommend rewatching them because it's so damn interesting.
I quite like ratchets behaviour on Oltanis, but maybe once he sees that clank is okay, he reverts back a bit to not show clank that he cares about him. Maybe he sounds a little bit too buddy buddy after clank wakes up. It’d be cool to have a cutscene once ratchet gets back to the ship similar to when clank gets back to the ship on orxon, where it’s pouring on the glass window of the ship and ratchet shows some sort of appreciation to clank
I think that's an interesting perspective on it! Yeah, if there were another scene or two snuck in that helped show even subtly that there's that kinship building more completely, it would've gone a long way towards wiping out many of my personal critiques.
29:00-ish yeah it's interesting how inflections and speech stuff changes as you go, getting better or more natural etc. so much stuff goes into the business its nuts
Ratchet and Clank PS2 era soundtrack is growing on me over time. I didn't care too much about then while playing them, but I find myself grooving them while remembering once in a while... I may find a way to write a medley for a small band.
Watching your videos from where you were to where you are now you're much better than you used to be. I always enjoy your retrospectives and I look forward to many more.
You want to know about something cringy I remember doing? Well, I sure did some pretty bad RU-vid videos myself so I can relate. Except for the part about making better videos afterward.😅 Well, at the very least it's made me appreciate the work of dedicated video essayists, even if I'm not sure I'll ever end up learning from my mistakes.
I liked this video idea, not only just to react to your old videos, but also just to see if your opinions have changed and discussing why they changed. Like you saying 2016 has a good soundtrack I completely forgot you even said that so that was funny to hear. But yeah great video as always
I’ve seen pretty much all reviews of Ratchet games on RU-vid and yours are by far the most well documented and thorough analysis, for every single game. I would be really interested if you’d make a Ratchet and Clank ranking, as it would be by far better than what so many other people have posted over the last couple of years.
You're far too kind, friend! I will say that rankings don't tend to be my vibe personally so I can't promise that'd be something I pursue anytime soon - especially with R&C, these games are my babies and picking favorites or "best" ones would end up being outdated the very next day. It's a bit easier with like usual top 10 games of the year stuff that I've done before, but within any particular series my favorite might change week to week if even 2-3 games are of similar quality. Not to mention that's a whole can of worms to tear open. Like 10-20% of commenters on any given R&C video of mine tend to completely miss the point or conflate critiquing a game with hating it - even as somebody who just laughs at the comments that attempt to be mean-spirited, and even though 80-90% of commenters are...normal ( _and_ when commenters themselves are only 1ish% of total viewers), that sorta vid is gonna set off a minefield!
@@TheGoldenBolt I see, that's very interesting and fair, i guess I see your points, both of them. Thanks for taking the time to answer in such an extent. Keep up the good work my man
I love your content man. It has gotten me back into playing games for a bit. Keep going the extra mile and making those special reviews you do so well. Thanks.
I feel as though the whole 'Rift apart is too short' discourse might be down to conflating 'number of planets' with 'length of the game' Rift Apart only has around 8/9 main planets, whilst Tools of Destruction has 16. But some of the levels in Rift Apart are huge, even compared to some of the larger levels in Tools.
That was a thought I had as well, although in this particular convo it didn't hit my mind. It's a little bit of that 100%, and I think there's certainly some element of "now it's $10 more" leading to more scrutiny on value.
I never like looking at my old stuff. The fact a lot of them barely exist as is kinda says a lot. And yeah, you're never going to like the thing you made 6 months ago as much as you did then. SOME things you might, but a lot of the time, you won't.
16:55 it’s gonna sound weird (and very stupid) saying this especially after the movie game being a retelling already happened not that long ago but I genuinely think they should try and redo Ratchet 1 again I loved 2016 especially after seeing your video explains all the hurdles and how they had to constantly change things due to the movie’s rewrites I kind of loved it more because of how decent it turned out the story isn’t great but it does have enough moments of heart where I see it as more of a companion to the original first game
Gotta agree with your thoughts on ratchet in number 1. when they 'rescue ratchet' in the sequels i think they did well. R&C remake was awful. why do AAA studios struggle so much with making a coherent character?
